Despite training hurdles, Sachin Yadav keeps focus intact
Sachin Yadav NEW DELHI: In the absence of Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra , promising athlete Sachin Yadav will lead India's contingent in the javelin throw competition at the Asian athletics championships, commencing in Gumi, South Korea on May 27. The event will mark the 25-year-old's first international appearance in a senior meet following his notable performances in domestic competitions. Currently India's second-best javelin thrower after Neeraj, Sachin achieved his personal best of 84.39m at the Uttarakhand National Games this year. His victory at the Federation Cup in Kochi last month, with a throw of 83.86m, secured his spot in the Asian meet. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! At the Asian event, Sachin aims to qualify for the World athletics championships to be held in Sep in Japan by achieving the qualification standard of 85.50m. His preparations for both the Asian meet and the Worlds got disrupted due to the installation of a new synthetic track at the main Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) stadium and the warm-up area, ahead of the World Para athletics championships scheduled for Sept-Oct. The ongoing construction work has compelled the javelin thrower to relocate his training base from JLN to an NCoE facility in Faridabad. 'It's difficult to travel to Faridabad every day for training. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Home Efficient with This Plug-In elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Learn More Undo It consumes a lot of time and affects my training badly. I can understand that new tracks are being laid at JLN for the para Worlds. But some alternative arrangements should have been made by authorities for track and field athletes who find it convenient to train at JLN because of the facilities available and also because it's conveniently located,' Sachin said. 'There are some training facilities in Delhi where athletes visiting JLN aren't allowed. Chhatrasal stadium is too far from my place, so I can't go there and prefer going to Faridabad.' Discussing his Asian meet prospects, Sachin said his primary goal is achieving his personal best and securing the Worlds qualification. 'I was confident about qualifying for the Worlds from the 'Neeraj Chopra' (NC) Classic event in Bengaluru. I had prepared well for it and was looking to make the most of the home advantage. Unfortunately, it got postponed. Nonetheless, I will look to achieve the mark in Gumi. It will be my first international competition and I am confident about my chances,' he said. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat, Sachin will compete alongside Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan at the Asian event, but he isn't stressed. 'I will be competing with myself. I never get scared by the presence of big names. I try to do my things and look to throw as far as possible. Arshad is a big name. Definitely, it will be tough (competing against him). I can only say, I'll give my best,' said Sachin. Get IPL 2025 match schedules , squads , points table , and live scores for CSK , MI , RCB , KKR , SRH , LSG , DC , GT , PBKS , and RR . 'My Target Is...': Sachin Yadav Eyes World Championship Qualification At Asian Meet
Last Updated: Yadav expressed disappointment over the postponement of the NC Classic, but hoped to make it through to the Worlds with a strong showing at the Asian Athletics Championships. Indian javelin throw athlete Sachin Yadav expressed disappointment over the postponement of the NC Classic, but hoped to make it through to the World Championships with a strong showing at the Asian Athletics Championships slated to be held in South Korea. The NC Classic was originally scheduled to be held on the 24th of May in Bengaluru, but has been postponed in the wake of the armed conflict between India and Pakistan. 'I was preparing for the NC Classic. It is world-class field and you do better when you compete with the best in the world," Yadav began. 'I was hoping to breach the World Championships' automatic qualifying distance during the NC Classic, so I am a bit disappointed," the 25-year-old said. 'Had I gone to South Korea after competing in the NC Classic, it would have been much easier. Now I have to qualify for the World Championships in South Korea. That is my target." Yadav, who boasts a PB of 84.39m, was introduced to the sport by his neighbour Sandeep Yadav who later patched him through to renowned javelin coach Naval Singh. 'The training under Naval Singh changed my life. I did not even imagine that I would reach this stage. But it happened due to Sandeep bhai and guruji (Naval Singh)." The installation of new tracks inside the JLN Stadium and the warm-up area for the World Para Athletics Championships scheduled for September-October has caused inconvenience for Yadav, who now has to travel to Faridabad for his throwing practices. This situation also highlights important concerns about Delhi's limited top-class training facilities. 'I am going to Faridabad from the NCoE for throwing sessions thrice a week as new tracks are being laid inside the JLN Stadium as well as in the warm-up area," the athlete said. 'In the remaining days, I do routine things like weight training, running, etc at the NCoE at JLN itself," he added. First Published: May 22, 2025, 21:23 IST

BAI urges former players to learn coaching and save Indian badminton
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) wants former top Indian players to hone their coaching skills under foreign coaches and work with junior players but also strive to save the Indian style of play from had advertised coaching position and received an overwhelming response with as many as 49 former players applying for the job."We invited applications from the top players who want to come into coaching with BAI and SAI. We got 49 applications out of which we have shortlisted 10-11. The list has gone to SAI for approval," BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra said in an Mishra stressed the importance of preserving the traditional Indian playing style, which he believes is slowly fading due to the increasing influence of foreign coaches. "The Indian style is somewhat fading. Prakash (Padukone) sir used deception to win the All England, (Pullela) Gopichand played net game to win. But now, under foreign coaches, the Indian shuttlers are playing a more physical game, more like the Indonesian or Malaysian style."Maybe our physique also doesn't fully support that kind of play. After playing one or two games the body may not be able to sustain the tempo. So these Indian coaches can pass on our style apart from learning the foreign style which may give better results," he plans to rotate the shortlisted coaches across training centres. Initially they will be assigned to junior players at the National Centres of Excellence (NCoE).advertisement"These coaches will be rotated in the centres. We want these coaches to work with junior players at the NCoE before moving to elite coaching."The BAI is also focussing on the development of junior players as it wants to create a "chain of talent"."Our focus at the NCoE is on junior players. Earlier, we would just hold 15-day camps before tournaments. But now, with the NCoE, they have a consistent space to train together," he said."It will take 3-4 years, but eventually, the question of 'who after Sindhu?' or 'who after Prannoy?' will be answered.""In China if top two are not playing, the third string player also goes and wins a tournament. We want to develop a similar system, prepare a chain of players so that even if the top two are not available then third best player has the capability to reach the semifinals."Mishra added that the top players will be given a choice to train across the three NCoEs in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Guwahati where one foreign coach will also be Malaysia's Tan Kim Her works at NCoE in Hyderabad and Indonesian Irwansyah Adi Pratama in Bengaluru while South Korea's Park Tae-Sang, who coaches junior players, works in also added that shuttlers will undergo fitness tests thrice a year."SAI has been focussing on players being fit or ready to play. They have set some parameters for this, some test that players should take thrice a year."India will host the senior World Championships next year and a team from the world body BWF will travel to India to inspect the venue -- the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi -- in Watch
