NJ Transit may not provide service to Shakira's MetLife performances
NEW YORK — Shakira fans attending the 'Hips Don't Lie' singer's upcoming performances at MetLife stadium shouldn't rely on NJ Transit for transportation. 'Due to the potential rail service stoppage, NJ TRANSIT will not be operating train or bus service to MetLife Stadium for the Shakira concerts on May 15th and 16th,' the transit service posted on its website Monday afternoon. Officials earlier warned on the NJ Transit website that 'there may be a NJ TRANSIT rail service disruption' due to an an impending strike by union engineers. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) planned to negotiate with the state-owned transportation company Monday in Washington, D.C. If no deal is reached by Friday, a lockout or strike could begin at 12:01 a.m., the BLET said on its website. The union claims its 450 members 'are the lowest-paid locomotive engineers at any of the major passenger railroads in the United States' and have gone six years without a raise. Shakira said on the 'Tonight Show' last week she was excited about kicking off her first U.S. stadium tour Tuesday. She'll perform in New Jersey on Thursday and Friday night. NJ Transit advises New Yorker attending Shakira's New Jersey shows that Coach USA buses will run between Port Authority and MetLife Stadium for passenger with advance tickets. It's suggested fans who prefer to drive should carpool and arrive early to avoid commuter traffic. Drivers dropping off concertgoers are encouraged to find parking and stay onsite 'to avoid extremely heavy traffic at pickup.' Travel delays by road and rail will surely be unwelcomed by Garden State residents also dealing with air travel issues. Troubles as Newark Airport first arose on April 28 when a pair of air traffic control systems stopped functioning correctly. The airport has said it's also dealing with staffing shortages. ----------

Advertisement Thursday's concert is sold out, meaning the strikes could impact thousands of the stadium's 82,500 capacity crowd depending how many were planning on taking public transit. 3 With a capacity of over 82,000, thousands of concert goers could be affected by the suspended service. Christopher Sadowski NJ Transit reps and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers union are set to meet in Washington Monday, where the sides will resume mediation in an attempt to avoid a work stoppage, according to NBC News. Around 800,000 passengers take NJ Transit buses and trains on a typical day, according to the company, translating to about 270 million riders annually. NJ Transit train engineers reject labor deal, raising potential for strike
NJ Transit train engineers have rejected a labor agreement with management, raising the potential for a strike or a lockout next month. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen on Tuesday rejected the March deal by a margin of 87%, the union said in a statement. The Railway Labor Act permits the workers to strike or NJ Transit's management to lock workers out as soon as May 15, according to the union. "Our members are angry," said union General Chairman Tom Haas. "I, along with other NJ Transit engineers, have kept the trains moving but we have gone without a raise since 2019, during a period of high inflation and throughout the pandemic that claimed some of our coworkers." NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri said in a statement he was disappointed the agreement was not ratified by members and that he was committed to returning to the bargaining table. "My focus remains on reaching a fair and sustainable agreement that works for everyone and ensures NJ TRANSIT can continue to provide the reliable service our customers count on," Kolluri said. A message seeking comment with Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, whose administration oversees the agency, was also left Wednesday. Details about the agreement were murky. A statement released at the time of the agreement cited a "reasonable wage increase" for the union's members, a well as the resolution of a long-standing grievance. Kolluri started in January as NJ Transit's top executive. Last summer, then-President Joe Biden signed an executive order creating a board to resolve the dispute. At the time, NJ Transit said a strike could be possible as soon as March 2025 . NJ Transit operates buses and rail in the state, providing an estimated 925,000 weekday trips, including into New York City. The labor dispute goes back to 2019, when the engineers' contract expired.
