NPCL joins hands with TERI for study about efficient power use in Greater Noida
Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) has partnered with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) for an extensive study on electricity consumption patterns in Greater Noida, aiming to promote efficient and sustainable power use, officials said on Wednesday. Greater Noida's highest peak power demand to date—831.84 MW—was recorded on June 12, 2025. (HT Photos) The initiative, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on August 9, will focus on 'Load Research' and 'Demand Side Management' (DSM) to identify how and when power is used across consumer categories. NPCL supplies electricity to around 1.75 lakh consumers in Greater Noida. 'Greater Noida's power needs are growing rapidly, and managing this growth sustainably is a priority for us. The study with TERI will give us the granular data we need to design programmes that not only keep the grid stable but also help our consumers save money and reduce their environmental footprint,' said NPCL spokesperson Manoj Jha. To be sure, the study programme will finish in seven months. According to NPCL, the research will track usage from residential to commercial sectors. The findings will be used to shape DSM programmes encouraging consumers to reduce consumption during peak hours and shift demand to non-peak times, helping stabilise the grid, lower bills, and cut emissions. NPCL managing director and CEO PR Kumar said, 'By understanding the detailed consumption patterns of our consumers, we will be in a position to introduce innovative measures that promote conscious consumption. The collaboration with TERI is an important step towards ensuring that Greater Noida becomes an energy-smart city.' TERI director general Vibha Dhawan said the study would support Greater Noida's shift to cleaner, more efficient power systems. 'Our approach combines data-driven insights with practical strategies for implementation, ensuring benefits for both consumers and the environment,' she said. Potential DSM measures include incentives for energy-efficient appliances, integrating renewable energy into the grid, and encouraging behavioural changes among consumers. NPCL officials believe the model could be replicated in other cities as a blueprint for sustainable electricity management. The city's highest peak power demand to date—831.84 MW—was recorded on June 12, 2025. Officials said rising demand from urban expansion and industrial growth makes the study a timely intervention to manage load without overburdening infrastructure or relying heavily on fossil fuels.

Rain pain: After outages, now water woes at Ecovillage in Greater Noida
Noida: Residents of a Greater Noida West condo are grappling with a severe water crisis after heavy rainfall flooded several basements on Friday. The flooding led to power outages across multiple towers, disrupting essential services. While electricity supply has since been restored, residents say water supply remains unreliable, forcing them to rely on private tankers for basic household needs. The society Supertech Ecovillage 1, home to thousands, has witnessed repeated complaints over poor drainage and inadequate infrastructure, with residents now demanding a permanent fix from the builder. The residents said that on Saturday, the water tanks could not be refilled during the outage, and the situation worsened as the weekend approached, with most residents staying indoors and needing water for daily use. The situation is particularly dire in towers B 9, B 10, and C 6, where residents have been struggling with almost no water supply. "We contacted the facility management and demanded that they arrange for water tankers, but even that has been inadequate," she said. Manish Kumar, a resident, said the problem began around 10am on Thursday when water started entering the interconnected basements of the towers. "The flooding affected electrical panels, causing technical malfunctions and leading NPCL to halt the power supply as a safety measure. While diesel generators and inverters were initially used to provide backup electricity, these systems also failed. The DG sets needed a break, and in this process, seven people were also stuck in a lift for 20 minutes on Friday. The power supply resumed at 3 pm on Friday," he said. The rainfall also led to severe flooding in the basement parking areas. With no proper drainage in place, the level rose high enough to partially submerge several cars and two-wheelers parked there. Many vehicle owners discovered the damage only after the water receded slightly. The residents said that despite previous complaints about drainage and water management, the facility management failed to take preventive measures, leaving them to bear the brunt of yet another monsoon disaster. Monu Tyagi, facility manager at Supertech Ecovillage, confirmed that the flooding and moisture damaged the electrical equipment, leading to a temporary shutdown. "The technical issues were resolved, and efforts are now underway to normalise the water supply. We are running motors to pump water and also bringing in tankers to meet the demand," he said. Abhishek Kumar, president of Noida Extension Flat Owner Welfare Association (NEFOWA), said that Ecovillage-1 residents are being forced to fetch water in buckets, giving the feel of slums. Earlier, residents were forced to endure a powerless day and night for a continuous 30 hours. In this society, nearly 15 vehicles were badly damaged due to basement flooding. "If these issues are not fixed, NEFOWA will resort to protest," he said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

Fire breaks out in power meter, leaves 16 families without electricity for 10 hrs
Noida: A fire broke out in the meter panel of a residential tower at Shiv Shakti Apartments in Sector Mu-2 around 3 am on Friday, leaving over 16 families without electricity for more than 10 hours. The fire, which began at the meter of flat 945, quickly spread to other meters in the panel, damaging all 16 units under the tower. No injuries were reported, but several residents said they were briefly trapped and experienced suffocation due to smoke. As the power outage rendered stairways dark and inaccessible, residents struggled to exit the building. A quick response by an RWA member helped contain the flames before fire services arrived. RWA president Dharmendra Rathi said this was the third fire-related incident in the society in a month and blamed inadequate infrastructure. Residents expressed anger that Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) officials failed to reach the site until nearly 10 hours after the fire. NPCL later cited electrical overloading and substandard cabling as the root causes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo "The outgoing cabling laid by GNIDA cannot handle the power load, leading to frequent short circuits," said Shashank Andey of NPCL's metering division. In a statement, NPCL said restoration work was underway, and power would be resumed after damaged meters were replaced.
