Western United talent in sights of A-League rivals as embattled club fights for future
Rival clubs have started making informal inquiries about Western United players whose careers are in limbo after the Victorian outfit was stripped of its A-League licence by Football Australia. United will this week lodge an appeal against FA's decision, with the financially embattled club's players having returned to training on Monday after last Friday night's scheduled trial against NPL Victoria team St Albans was called off just hours after the announcement that the club's licence had ben stripped. And despite other A-League clubs showing respect to United by not making aggressive bids for the club's players during the appeal process, feelers have been put out for some of United's talent. And that's hardly surprising considering United fell just a week short of playing in last season's grand final. The likes of club captain Ben Garuccio, star midfielders Angus Thurgate and Rhys Bozinovski, Japanese pair Hiroshi Ibusuki and Tomoki Imai, and teenage defender Dylan Leonard would all be on the radar of a host of A-League clubs before the start of the season in October. Leonard, who turns 18 on August 30, has also attracted interest from European clubs. United remains confident that its appeal will be successful However, the club's proposed new majority investor KAM Melbourne, a subsidiary of American company KAM Sports, is yet to submit its full ownership proposal to the Australian Professional League despite United having announced the investment – understood to be worth $100m when including the purchase of the club's parent company Western Melbourne Group – in May. United has also been banned by FIFA from registering new signings because of a financial dispute with the club's former striker Aleksandar Prijovic. With United's future uncertain, the APL's release of the fixture schedule for the upcoming A-League men's and women's seasons has been delayed. Should United fold, the men's competition will be reduced to 12 teams, which will end the need for a weekly bye. However, byes would be needed in what would become an 11-team women's competition in the event of United's demise. Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory has signed Australian under-20 captain Sebastian Esposito on loan from Italian top-flight club Lecce. 🛬 — Melbourne Victory (@gomvfc) August 11, 2025 The 20-year-old centre-back, who has also been part of Australian under-23 squads, said his move to the Melbourne club was an 'excellent opportunity' for him to develop his game at senior level. 'Seeing how the club has significantly aided in the development of various players who have gone on to play their best club football at Victory, and then represent the Socceroos, I know if I can work hard and give my all on and off the pitch, then I can too can make a difference and achieve my goals and dreams,' Esposito said.

Brown at the double as Glory stun Western United 3-0
Western United's hopes of clinging onto fourth spot have suffered a huge blow after they slumped to a shock 3-0 loss in the A-League Women to Perth Glory at the Sam Kerr Football Centre. Glory entered Friday night's match in Perth needing a win to keep their faint finals hopes alive. A double from Kelli Brown and a late penalty to the returning Susan Phonsongkham got the job done, lifting Glory back to within six points of the sixth-placed Mariners. How about this for a ball 😮💨🪄Perth Glory hit the front thanks to a slick team move!Sarah O'Donoghue threaded the needle, Kelli Brown did the rest 👌Watch #PERvWUN live NOW on Paramount+ and 10 Play 📺 — Ninja A-League (@aleaguewomen) March 7, 2025 United remain in fourth spot for the time being on 26 points. But given fifth-placed Roar (25 points), sixth-placed Mariners (24 points) and seventh-placed Canberra (24 points) have all played two fewer games than them, Western are now in grave danger of suffering a big slide down the table. Brown opened the scoring in the 14th minute after latching on to a perfectly-weighted pass from Sarah O'Donoghue before squeezing the ball home. Chloe Logarzo almost equalised for Western, only for her powerful strike to rebound off the woodwork. Glory goalkeeper Casey Dumont then pulled off a stunning save to deny Isabel Dehakiz's dipping strike. United's hopes of snaring a result nosedived dramatically in the 70th minute when defender Julia Sardo was red carded for taking down goalward-bound Megan Wynne from behind. Brown scored her second goal of the match in the 81st minute, and she had Western United goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln to thank for it. Lincoln fumbled Brown's weak initial attempt, with the Glory attacker pouncing on the loose ball to tap into an open net. It was party time in the 86th minute when a handball in the box from Western United resulted in Phonsongkham nailing a goal from the spot.
