Latavius Murray announces new timeline for Jon Diaz Community Center opening, addresses multi-year delay

NEDROW, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Former NFL running back and Central New Yorker Latavius Murray announced on Monday plans for when his community center will finally be built. This comes after years of waiting, along with fundraisers being held for the project. In 2022, he set his sights on building the Jon Diaz Community Center in Nedrow, with the groundbreaking scheduled for 2023. Halfway through 2025, only the floor plan has been completed. 'We're about 99% done with the floor plan, which is a huge step, something a long time coming,' Murray said at a community meeting Monday night. 'We got excited about it, too and I was able to get some funding. Sometimes, I get capital funding that I can allocate around,' May said. 'I was able to get some funding for it. $500,000 for it.' Murray said the reason for the delay was having to wait for grant funds and more donors. 'When you have to apply for grants and get donors, it's a process. It's not easy, but it's something we signed up for and we're gaining momentum now,' he said. 'We're excited about where we are heading.' Now he says the plan is to have the groundbreaking in 2026 and the center open in 2027. 'While we have some goals in mind and things we want to accomplish with timelines, sometimes things change. What's important is keeping the main thing, the main thing, keep progressing, keep focus,' Murray said. 'We've been able to do that and that's why I feel confident in where we're going.' Murray partnered with the Integrated Community Alternatives Network to open an office space in Syracuse. The space will provide social and emotional services to families and children. The space is located at 1010 James Street. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Alleged after-hours nightclub in Binghamton locked down

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The owner of an alleged after-hours nightclub and lounge has entered an agreement with the city of Binghamton to lock down the property and demolish the building on Broome Street. Steven Krauss was sent a warning by Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham in April 2024 stating that the property may be deemed a public nuisance under the City's Property and Building Nuisance Reform Law, commonly known as the 'lockdown law.' 'The alleged illegal after-hours club at 8 Broome St. is upending residents' quality of life and draining already-limited police resources. Under Binghamton's updated lockdown law, we are putting the property owner on notice – the City will not tolerate establishments that operate outside the law, threaten public safety and hurt our neighborhoods. If the activity isn't abated, we'll use every resource possible to shut this location down,' said Kraham. On April 30, Krauss agreed to lock down the property, as well as promising to obtain a demolition permit to dismantle the back portion of the building where a bar and lounge currently exists, to reconstruct the area as office space for his trucking company. As part of the agreement, no construction will be done before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m., and no one without expressed written consent will be allowed onto the property during the lockdown period, which is scheduled to last 12 months. Anyone seen on the premises during such time will be subject to criminal loitering prosecution. The front portion of 8 Broome Street, where Krauss operates his Bail Bonds business, will only be accessible to Krauss on certain days of the week for limited hours. Sustainable Syracuse: Building a greener Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)—The City of Syracuse is making a long-term commitment to sustainability with the new Sustainable Syracuse initiative, which aims to help reduce emissions, improve energy use, and prepare the city for the impacts of climate change that the world has been experiencing. On Earth Day, Mayor Ben Walsh announced the plan, describing it as a community effort to build a more inclusive and environmentally resilient Syracuse, especially given the recent extreme weather. 'The whole purpose of this planning is to look into the future far beyond where any of us is at this moment. We are planning for future generations, so we're going to accomplish a lot before I am done,' said Syracuse City Mayor Ben Walsh. The other plan, the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory (GHGI), will track and list the sources of emissions across city operations and the community as a whole. That includes fuel consumption, energy use, waste, and even the reasons behind our travel. The last time the city created and completed this list was in 2010. With the new data, the city will be able to see how far it has come and identify where to focus next. The city has already seen improvements since implementing earlier green investments, such as switching more than 17,000 streetlights to LEDs back in 2020, which saved about $3 million.
