Women are key drivers of India's growth, says PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (August 15, 2025) said that women in India were not only beneficiaries of a rising economy but also its key drivers. 'From start-ups to the space sector, from the playing fields to the armed forces, our daughters are making their mark. Today, with pride, women stand shoulder to shoulder in the country's journey of development,' Mr. Modi said in his address to the nation on Independence Day. 'Every sector now proudly acknowledges the strength of our nari shakti (women's power),' he said, mentioning the first batch of women cadets who graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA). 'The whole country was filled with pride at that historic moment'. Mr. Modi also praised the transformative role of women's self-help groups (SHGs), saying that programmes like the 'NaMo Drone Didi' have given rural women a new identity. 'I am happy to inform the nation that, with the support of our nari shakti, two crore women have already become Lakhpati Didis,' he said. The Lakhpati Didi scheme, also known as the Lakhpati Didi Yojana, is an initiative by the Ministry of Rural Development that aims to empower women in SHGs to earn a sustainable annual household income of ₹1 lakh or more. Several of these 'Lakhpati Didis' were present at the Red Fort on Friday as special guests. Mr. Modi also paid homage to the visionaries who drafted India's Constitution, especially highlighting the role of women leaders in shaping the document. 'Our nari shakti also played an important role. Leaders like Hansa Mehta and Dakshayani Velayudhan made significant contributions in strengthening the Constitution of India,' he said.

From the Command and Control Centre to destroying enemy posts, the brave daughters of the BSF displayed exceptional valour.' He said the operation had exposed terrorist hideouts in locations even the Pakistani army never expected. 'Proxy wars through terrorism will no longer be tolerated. Now, we will strike even inside enemy territory,' he declared. Referring to an incident in Pahalgam, Modi stated, 'Terrorists not only shed the blood of Indians, but they also attacked our culture... They challenged the women's power of India – a challenge that has now turned into a nightmare for the terrorists and their handlers.' He also said the operation has become a new symbol of 'Nari Shakti'. 'BSF's daughters were holding the front lines from Jammu to Punjab, Rajasthan, and the Gujarat border. They gave a strong reply to cross-border firing,' he noted. PM Modi emphasised India's growing trust in the capability of its daughters – from battlefields to classrooms. 'Today, women are being deployed in frontline positions in the Army, Navy, and Air Force. 'Today, a large number of our daughters are becoming doctors, engineers, and scientists. In the Chandrayaan-3 mission, over 100 women scientists and engineers were involved,' he added. PM Modi releases Ahilyabai Holkar commemorative coin, inaugurates Indore Metro and MP airports During the same event, the Prime Minister also released a commemorative coin and postal stamp marking the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar. He virtually inaugurated the Indore Metro and newly constructed airports in Datia and Satna, and laid foundation stones for several development projects in Madhya Pradesh. 'All these projects will enhance facilities in Madhya Pradesh, accelerate development, and create many new employment opportunities,' Modi said. Paying homage to Ahilyabai Holkar, the Prime Minister said her life symbolised the transformative power of strong public will and resilience. 'She is a symbol of how, when there is public willpower and firm determination, even the most adverse circumstances can be overcome,' he remarked. He praised Ahilyabai's efforts in preserving India's cultural and religious heritage, especially during times of colonial oppression. 'She undertook the restoration of countless temples and pilgrimage sites, including the Kashi Vishwanath temple,' he noted. PM Modi also referred to her advocacy for crop diversification, urging today's farmers to adopt similar practices for better incomes. 'Even today, after 250-300 years, we have to continuously tell our farmers to practice crop diversification,' he said. Ahilyabai Holkar is remembered for her progressive approach to governance, women's education, infrastructure development, and revival of sacred spaces. Her patronage of the Maheshwari saree tradition and creation of water bodies, dharamshalas, and roads continues to be celebrated as part of India's cultural legacy.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a 'Mahila Sashaktikaran Maha Sammelan' in Bhopal on the 300th birth anniversary of legendary queen Ahilyabai Holkar. He also virtually inaugurated the Super Priority Corridor of Indore Metro, Datia and Satna airports and laid the foundation stone of some developmental projects. He also transferred the first instalment of 1,271 new Atal Gram Seva Sadan (Panchayat Bhawan), built at ₹ 483 crore. PM Modi said, 'In Pahalgam, terrorists not only shed the blood of Indians, but they also attacked our culture. They tried to divide our society. These terrorists have challenged the women's power of India -- a challenge that has now turned into a nightmare for the terrorists and their handlers.' 2. 'Operation Sindoor is India's largest and most successful counter-terrorism operation. Our forces destroyed terrorist hideouts in places that even Pakistan's army had never imagined. This operation made it loud and clear that proxy wars through terrorism will no longer be tolerated. We all know how significant the role of the BSF (Border Security Force) was in this operation. BSF's daughters were holding the front lines from Jammu to Punjab, Rajasthan, and the Gujarat border. 'For the first time, the doors of Sainik Schools have been opened to girls. Before 2014, only 25% of NCC cadets were girls, but now that number is heading toward 50%. The first batch of women cadets has passed out from the National Defence Academy (NDA). From flying fighter planes to serving on INS Vikrant, women officers are demonstrating outstanding bravery,' PM Modi stressed on women deployment in frontline positions in the armed forces. 5. PM Modi mentioned, 'But today, the government is making efforts so that our women lead the way in modern tech. In agriculture, a drone revolution is happening. Through the NaMo Drone Didi initiative, the confidence and income of rural women are rising.' 6. 'Today, a large number of our daughters are becoming doctors, engineers, and scientists. In all of our major space missions, our mothers and sisters are working as scientists. In the Chandrayaan-3 mission, over 100 women scientists and engineers were involved,' he asserted. 7. PM Modi honoured Ahilyabai Holkar and remarked that merely hearing her name inspires profound respect, stating, 'She is a symbol of how, when there is public willpower and firm determination, even the most adverse circumstances can be overcome and transformed into remarkable outcomes. Centuries ago, when the country was shackled in slavery, accomplishing such great deeds that future generations would continue to speak of them was no easy task.'
