Nagpur MahaMetro's celebration on wheels witnesses slowdown
1 2 Nagpur: "Celebration on Wheels" (CoW), the Nagpur Metro initiative that lets commuters rent out an entire train for private events saw 280 bookings in over four years, an average of just five in a month. The idea that took off with enthusiasm in its early days, hasn't really clicked, data shows. Launched in November 2020 with only three bookings in its debut month, CoW quickly captured the public's imagination. December 2020 alone saw 33 bookings, which remains the highest for a month so far. Bookings steadily rose to 41 in 2021 and surged to 81 in 2022, an 84% year-on-year jump. Since then, however, the booking numbers have seen gradual decline. Bookings fell to 72 in 2023, then to 38 in 2024. So far in 2025, only 12 events were logged by the end of May. A senior MahaMetro official said, "Almost 90% of the celebrations that we have are birthday celebrations. Then in addition to that, even for school trips the trains are booked. Apart from that, off-track events like yoga on the train are also organised." "For such Celebration on Wheels, special trains are given at whatever time and from whichever station the commuter has demanded, the official said." He said that MahaMetro conducts regular outreach programmes at schools and colleges to promote CoW. Booking patterns suggest a seasonal trend, with July and August seeing more such activity. With monthly footfall numbers tapering off, Metro authorities may have to rethink how to keep the concept fresh.

Lok Vihar First Metro Station On Kamptee Run To Open In Nov
1 2 3 Nagpur: Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) is aiming to complete the Lok Vihar Metro Station by November this year, which would make it the first station to be commissioned under Nagpur Metro's Phase 2. Already, 100% piling work has been completed for the station which is coming up along the Kamptee highway on the Reach 2A stretch. Now, casting work has been taken up for three major slabs at the station, according to a senior MahaMetro official. One of the slabs was cast on Tuesday, and all three are scheduled to be completed by June 8, the official said. Piling work has also been completed at three other stations on the Kamptee corridor — Pili Nadi, All India Radio and Golf Club. In all, 528 piles have been executed across the four station sites — 148 at Pili Nadi, 122 at All India Radio, 140 at Lok Vihar and 118 at Golf Club. Simultaneously, piling work is in the final stages at three more stations — Kamptee police station, Kanhan and Transport Nagar. The work is expected to be completed within the next few days. Transport Nagar station is coming up on the Pardi corridor. The Reach 2 stretches from Automotive Square to Kanhan, which is subdivided into Reach 2A (Automotive Square to Lekha Nagar) and Reach 2B (Lekha Nagar to Kanhan). As per MahaMetro, 68% of pier work along the Reach 2A has been completed, along with 77% of pile caps. Segment casting has reached 40%, while span erection stands at 26%. These components are critical for shaping the elevated viaducts and ensuring structural stability. In a parallel development, MahaMetro has also completed major geotechnical investigations across all four stretches of the Phase 2 project, with minor work at the contractor level ongoing. This study of subsurface conditions ensures that foundation designs are sound and suitable for long-term Metro operations. Officials said over 90% of the land required for Phase 2 has been acquired. The Phase-II of Nagpur Metro aims to add 43.8km of new Metro lines and 32 stations, to enhance connectivity to suburban areas of the city. It is being executed across four stretches: Khapri to MIDC ESR, Prajapati Nagar to Transport Nagar, Automotive Square to Kanhan, and Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna. The extended network is expected to ease road congestion, enhance urban mobility, and support Nagpur's broader vision of becoming a more sustainable and accessible city.

Nagpur Metro assists over 2,200 specially-abled passengers in a year
Nagpur: In a move towards creating a more inclusive urban commute, the Nagpur Metro assisted 2,222 specially-abled passengers over the past year, signalling a growing acceptance and use of its uniquely-designed accessibility features, as per MahaMetro data. What sets Nagpur Metro apart is its comprehensive infrastructure tailored for special passengers. All stations are equipped with wheelchair ramps, elevators, tactile pathways for the visually impaired, and dedicated boarding assistance. Each train includes reserved spaces for wheelchair users. In addition, an emergency notification system in audio-visual format enhances safety for all, especially those with hearing or vision impairments. Trained personnel are posted across all stations to assist passengers with disabilities, elderly travellers, and those with mobility challenges. "The 2,222 passengers served are not just numbers; they represent a shift in how urban mobility is being perceived by marginalised communities," a senior MahaMetro official said and added, "The rising figures suggest that accessibility is no longer a secondary concern; it's a deciding factor in public transport usage. The initiative also reflects compliance with rights of persons with disabilities Act, 2016, and aligns with India's broader push for inclusive development. By embedding accessibility into its core design, Nagpur Metro challenges the traditional notion of public transit as utilitarian — instead making it equitable. As other cities look to upgrade or build their own metro systems, Nagpur's model offers a compelling blueprint, including technology, efficiency, and empathy working in sync. With social inclusion embedded into its design, the metro is proving that the true benchmark of progress lies not just in speed or scale, but in how many people it takes along for the ride.
