Amarnath Yatra duration reduced to 38 days in 2025, security beefed up
The annual Amarnath Yatra will be held this year from July 3 to August 9, reducing its duration to 38 days from the 52 days observed in 2024. The decision to shorten the pilgrimage period was made before the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, mostly tourists, and is unrelated to any immediate security threat. Heightened security amid upcoming events Security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir have been intensified in light of the upcoming Eid-Ul-Adha, Amarnath Yatra, and other key events. Earlier this week, Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat directed forces to deploy anti-sabotage teams along the yatra routes and strengthen risk mitigation strategies. A police spokesperson said the DGP convened a joint meeting with officers from the police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to review preparations. SOPs and vigilance stressed During the review, the DGP emphasised the strict enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and called for proactive security measures to safeguard pilgrims. He also urged field officers to intensify efforts to dismantle terror networks in the region. These instructions follow a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Jammu to assess security arrangements for the pilgrimage. The meeting focused on evaluating threat levels, deployment plans, and improving coordination between security forces, intelligence agencies, and civil administration. Shah underscored the importance of real-time intelligence sharing and maintaining high vigilance to ensure peace and stability throughout the pilgrimage period.

581 CAPF units, jammers, drones, K9 units: Post-Pahalgam attack, a full-spectrum shield for Amarnath Yatra
NEW DELHI: The government has planned to deploy 581 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), jammers, drones and K9 units for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, making it one of the most heavily secured pilgrimages. The annual yatra to the Amarnath shrine in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted over a reduced 38-day schedule this year, from July 3 to August 9. The annual pilgrimage comes as India remains on high alert after Pahalgam terror attack and a decisive ' Operation Sindoor ' by armed forces againt Pakistan-backed terrorism. As part of a massive security overhaul, signal jammers will be deployed for the first time to protect the movement of yatra convoys, a measure aimed at neutralising threats posed by remote-controlled improvised explosive devices (IEDs). During the passage of the convoy, all roads leading to the yatra routes and National Highways will be temporarily blocked to ensure maximum security, news agency ANI reported. Security forces will be stationed across both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, with layered arrangements involving: Road Opening Parties (ROPs) to secure and sanitise key stretches ahead of movement. Quick Action Teams (QATs) positioned for rapid response. Bomb Disposal Squads (BDS) for neutralising explosives. K9 units - highly trained sniffer dogs for explosive detection. Drones to provide real-time aerial surveillance. Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Nalin Prabhat on Monday had directed security forces to bolster measures to mitigate potential risks by deploying anti-sabotage teams along the pilgrimage routes. The director general of police (DGP) also asked them to utilise advanced technologies to enhance surveillance and threat detection capabilities.

J&K Chief Secy, DGP review security for Mata Kheer Bhawani festival in Ganderbal
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo and Director General of Police (DGP), Nalin Prabhat on Sunday reviewed the security ahead of the annual Mata Kheer Bhawani festival in Tullamulla town of Ganderbal district. Officials said that in preparation for the upcoming Mata Kheer Bhawani Mela at Tullamulla town of Ganderbal, DGP, Nalin Prabhat visited the deity's temple on Sunday to assess the security arrangements. The annual festival starts on June 3. Accompanied by the DIG (Central Kashmir), SSP Ganderbal, and SSP Traffic Rural, the DGP reviewed the on-ground situation to ensure a peaceful and incident-free pilgrimage. Later in the day, Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo also arrived at the temple to inspect the preparations. Speaking to media persons, the chief secretary said: "All the arrangements have been put in place. Adequate security measures have also been ensured for the safe and peaceful commencement of the Mata Kheer Bhawani Mela." Both the DGP and the Chief Secretary offered prayers at the temple, highlighting the cultural and spiritual significance of the event. Officials reiterated their commitment to providing a smooth and secure experience for all devotees attending the annual pilgrimage. The Mela, one of the most important religious gatherings for the Kashmiri Pandit community, attracts devotees from across the country. Dedicated to Mata Ragnya, believed to be the reincarnation of goddess Durga, the temple shrine has a sacred spring. Devotees believe that the colour of the spring water on the annual festival foretells the coming events of the year. Elders in Tullamulla town say that in 1947, when the tribal raiders invaded Kashmir, the colour of the spring water was dark black. Pink or milky colour are believed to be auspicious. Legend has it that, annoyed by the licentious deeds of Ravana, Mata Ragnya directed Hanuman to relocate her deity to Tullamulla town from Sri Lanka. Muslims of Tullamulla town serve milk in earthen pots to the Kashmiri Pandit devotees on their arrival at the temple shrine.
