Speedy Tigresses avoid last place at Nations Cup 2
KUALA LUMPUR: National women's hockey coach Nasihin Nubli admitted he was relieved after the Speedy Tigresses avoided the wooden spoon at the Women's Nations Cup 2 in Poland on Sunday. Malaysia edged South Africa 4-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time to finish seventh out of eight teams. Nuramirah Syakirah Zulkifli, Siti Nur Arfah Nor, Nur Shamine Azureen Badusha, and Fatin Shafika Mahd Sukri all converted in the shootout. Earlier, Nur Afiqah Syahzani Azhar had given Malaysia the lead in the 49th minute, before Charne Maddocks equalised for South Africa seven minutes later. It was Malaysia's first win in five matches at the tournament. They had lost all three group games — 2-0 to Poland, 3-1 to South Africa and 4-2 to Uruguay — before being hammered 5-0 by Italy in the 5th-8th classification match. "I'm relieved we finally got our first win," said Nasihin. "My players were under pressure throughout the tournament, facing top-tier opposition. There are definitely areas we need to improve before our next outing." The team will now shift their focus to the Asia Cup in Hangzhou, China from Sept 5-14.

Speedy Tigresses stopped by Uruguay
KUALA LUMPUR: After Malaysia lost 4-2 to Uruguay in a women's Nations Cup Two match in Walcz, Poland on Thursday, coach Nasihin Nubli said he wants his team to be more disciplined in defence. It was the Speedy Tigresses' third defeat in Group A. World No 24 Malaysia lost 2-0 to world No. 26 Poland and 3-1 to South Africa (No. 22) earlier. Nur Afiqah Syahzani Azhar scored in the 18th and 27th minutes. World No. 23 Uruguay's goals were scored by Manuela Quinones (10th, 32nd), Manuela Vilar (12th) and Manuela Barrandeguy (24th). Malaysia, who finished last in their group, will face Italy in the fifth to eighth classification match. Nasihin said: "We have to be more disciplined in our defence. We need to improve our game against Italy (No. 18), who are ranked higher than us. "We also hope to win our first match of the tournament in Poland."

Speedy Tigresses tamed by South Africa
KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Nasihin Nubli is satisfied with Malaysia's performance despite the Speedy Tigresses going down 3-1 to South Africa in the Nations Cup Two in Walcz, Poland yesterday. Dayang Nuramirah Abang Mahadini gave Malaysia the lead in the 11th minute, but South Africa hit back with three goals in 10 minutes through Ntsopa Mokoena (39th), Onthatile Zulu (42nd) and Hannah Pearce (49th). "I'm proud of the fighting spirit shown by my players against a strong team like South Africa who have featured in the Olympics," Nasihin said. On Monday, Malaysia had lost 2-0 to hosts Poland in their Group A opener. This led to Malaysia's world ranking dropping one rung to 24. After two defeats, Malaysia will play for fifth to eighth placing. Malaysia will wrap up their group fixtures tomorrow against a tough Uruguay who had defeated South Africa 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Poland.

Malaysia women suffer shock loss to provincial side in China
KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's hockey team suffered an embarrassing 1-0 defeat to Liaoning in their second friendly at Liaoning Province, China, on Thursday. The result was a major blow for world No. 23 Malaysia, who were expected to beat the provincial side even with a second-string line-up. Liaoning , who featured in the Malaysian Women's Hockey League (MWHL) last year, are using the friendly series to gear up for the China National Games later this year. On Wednesday, Nasihin Nubli's side were held to a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the seven-game series. The Speedy Tigresses are using the matches as part of their build-up to the Nations Cup 2 in Poland from June 16 to 22. Malaysia have been drawn in Group A alongside world No. 21 South Africa, Uruguay (No. 24), and hosts Poland (No. 27).

Speedy Tigresses held by Liaoning
KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's hockey team could only draw 1-1 with the Liaoning team of China in a friendly match in Liaoning province today. Dayang Nuramirah Abang Mahadini scored for world No. 23 Malaysia off a penalty corner. It was a disappointing result for coach Nasihin Nubli's national side who were unable to beat a China provincial team that played in the Malaysian league last year. The Speedy Tigresses went to China to play seven friendly matches in preparation for the Nations Cup 2 in Walcz, Poland from June 16-22.
