Rochester Education Foundation marks 20 years of student support

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Education Foundation celebrated 20 years of providing resources to city students at Thursday's gala. The REF serves more than 20,000 students in the Rochester area through four core programs providing help with reading and literacy, music and arts, and even financial aid guidance when it comes to applying for colleges. One student we spoke with shared about his experience with the foundation as an ambassador at his school. 'I've been helping others by advocating for what the ref does, by helping them fill out the FAFSA form for college and what not, also how they operate in schools like mine by donating instruments and spreading joy through their many different programs,' World of Inquiry School No. 58 Student Ambassador Trevor Wiggins said. A familiar face was also in attendance — News 8's own Natalie Kucko was the emcee for the night. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘They love coming here:' CMAC officials talk recruitment for busy 2025 lineup

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. (WROC) – Concert season has arrived, and if you're looking to add some shows to the calendar, there's many options across Western New York. There's been plenty of buzz specifically around CMAC in Canandaigua, which is bringing in some big names this year. News 8's Natalie Kucko spoke with officials at the venue to learn more on what they have in store as well as the draw coming in locally this season. 'We always have our wish list, if you will, and then look to our promoter, too, to say, 'Hey, who's up and coming?' So, it's really exciting,' said Jordynn Gould, marketing and public relations director for CMAC. CMAC was recently nominated Outdoor Venue of the Year by the Academy of Country Music Awards. Already, the venue has four sold-out shows for 2025, which includes Benson Boone, Megan Moroney, The Killers, and Hozier. Gould says CMAC's new promoter, New York City's 'The Bowery Presents,' has helped to bring in bigger acts. The firm signed on with the venue ahead of the 2024 season. 'I think we have a well-oiled machine. We have a small team that puts everything together and we're really proud of what we offer to all of our fans. We have quite a few who have never performed at CMAC, so it's really exciting to bring new faces to the area,' said Gould. The 2025 season kicks off in mid May with two back-to-back shows from country artist Kane Brown. Other notable acts include James Taylor, The Beach Boys, Brad Paisley, Bonnie Raitt, John Mulaney, Train, and more. Gould adds when artists perform in the Finger Lakes, they enjoy staying in the region. She says that helps the recruiting process, along with revenue brought in by ticketholders. 'When artists perform at CMAC, they really love coming here. They remember. They love the Canandaigua area. We always offer them time out on the lake. It's just very different. So, the hospitality they receive when they come here, they remember it. It's helpful. Once they come here, we hope they'll come back,' she said. If you're looking to splurge on tickets this season, CMAC promises more entertainment. 'We hope when [fans] think about concert season, as the weather warms up, they think about CMAC and wanting to come back and have a good experience from the time they park to the time they leave,' said Gould. CMAC's box office is now open on the venue grounds Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from noon until 4 p.m. The venue plans to announce more acts for this season's lineup in the coming weeks. ‘We're open for business:' Fairport village workers move forward despite Rt. 250 construction

FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WROC) — Construction is now underway in Fairport involving a near $3.5 million bridge replacement along Rt. 250. News 8's Natalie Kucko caught up with business owners Monday to learn how they are managing, as the work is expected to take several months to complete. The New York State Department of Transportation is replacing the 90-year-old bridge that runs under Main Street, over Thomas Creek, and into the village. 'At this point in time, we've weathered many of the storms whether the lift bridge was closed, railroad construction, and now the Thomas Creek culvert being replaced. We've lived it. We've been here, and we're going to be here for many years to come,' said Doug Sharp, owner of RV&E Bike and Skate. With the construction expected to bring its challenges, business owners are staying optimistic. According to the DOT, work is expected to last about four months total. As part of the project, new sidewalks will be installed, along with ADA compliant curb ramps. 'It's one more adjustment. It's one more thing we've got to roll with. I mean, with business owners, [it's] forever. But, especially the past five years, we have really had to roll with punches and roll with things that change rapidly and adjust to things on the fly and figure out ways to bring people and get our product out there and get ourselves out there,' said Sean McSherry, owner of Junction361 Cafe. The section of Rt. 250 is situated north of Fairport's Lift Bridge. Business owners News 8 heard from say they are spreading the word to customers and assuring that access to the village won't change. 'You have to make sure you market it to your customers, so that they know we are still open and we're working very hard. The most recent was the Lift Bridge construction, and we really did not lose any businesses over that time period. That was a much longer period of time over many different circumstances. So, we're confident with the Fairport businesses to be strong. We're still open for business. Come see us and support us,' said Sharp. As the work is expected to run through event season, Sharp added some vendors along North Main Street that would normally set up for Canal Days in June will relocate to other parts of the village to help accommodate traffic. While construction lasts, drivers are asked to follow detours posted along Whitney, Turk Hill, and Ayrault Roads. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
