Moment van driver smashes into broken-down car after checking phone
A man suffered devastating, life-changing injuries, including a leg amputation, after a distracted van driver crashed into his broken-down car on the A27 in December 2023. The driver, Nathan Cole, was checking his phone and speeding at 72mph, exceeding his van's limit, when he collided with the vehicle and the man in his 60s standing nearby. Footage released by Sussex Police showed Cole's dangerous driving leading up to the incident. Cole, 29, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court to two years and four months in prison and disqualified from driving for four years and four months. Watch the video in full above.

A man was left with devastating life-changing injuries after a distracted van driver ploughed into his broken-down car. Footage released by Sussex Police on Wednesday (18 June) shows Nathan Cole checking his phone whilst speeding down the A27 at 72mph, 12mph faster than his van's limit in December 2023. The 29-year-old crashed into a broken-down car on the side of the dual carriageway and hit a man in his 60s standing next to the vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where he spent time in a coma and had his leg amputated. Cole, of Denton Drive, Brighton, was sentenced at Lewes Crown Court on Friday (13 June) to two years and four months in prison and was disqualified from driving for four years and four months.

At 72 mph the speeding van sheers off the drivers side door of the Peugeot in the violent impact. Cole immediately reacts as the air bag goes off in his face, he grabs hold of the steering wheel with both hands and screams.
