May vehicle sales wrap: 50 top selling vehicles and expert insights after buoyant month
The Ford Ranger edged closer to Toyota's Hilux in May, after its sales grew by 24%. Image: Supplied South African new vehicle sales rode a wave of optimism in May, with the market growing by a significant 22% year-on-year, according to Naamsa. Although sales were relatively slow during the first half of May, there was a significant uptick during the second half of the month, the National Automobile Dealers' Association (NADA) reported. This came in the wake of the 2025 Budget being finalised, as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa's meeting with US President Donald Trump and the interest rate cut. Passenger car sales, at 31,741 units, surged by 30% versus the same month in 2024, while light commercial and bakkie sales increased by a more modest 5.8%. On the sales charts, bakkies took the top two spots. The Toyota Hilux led overall with 2,548 sales, a decline of 8.3% versus the previous month, while the Ford Ranger took second spot overall with 2,147 sales, an impressive gain of 24.2%. Third overall, and leading the passenger car sector was the Suzuki Swift at 1,842 units, albeit down by 11.4% over April, while the Toyota Corolla Cross retained fourth position with its volume of 1,629, an increase of 2.8%. Naamsa said the Reserve Bank's decision to cut the repo rate by 25 basis points signalled a welcome policy pivot in support of industrial growth, affordability, and macro-economic stability. "The automotive sector finds itself once again at the coalface of global economic shifts," said Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa. "The SARB's latest decision to lower interest rates is both timely and commendable. It directly supports consumer affordability and boosts production competitiveness at a time when global uncertainty is weighing heavily on our export markets. While the new tariff measures remain a concern, our industry has proven its resilience time and time again."

May figures: the best selling cars in SA
May's new vehicle market registered 45,308 sales against the 37,139 retailed in the same month last year. It was the eighth month in a row that sales have outperformed those of a year earlier. After five months of 2025, the market is 12.6% ahead of the same stage of 2024, up from 205,771 to 231,719 units. Brandon Cohen, chair of the National Automobile Dealers' Association (Nada), thinks the real market is stronger than it appears as 12 of the 24 Chinese brands selling vehicles here don't report their sales numbers. Lebo Gaoaketse, head of marketing and communication at WesBank, was cautiously enthusiastic about the figures. 'First quarter sales performed better by volume while displaying slower growth, indicating that the month was a solid volume performance rather than an overriding reason to celebrate,' he said. 'While volumes continue to be confidence-inspiring, household budgets remain under pressure,' said Gaoaketse. 'The market's expected slow recovery is continuing to play catch-up, but the industry should remain vigilant and will continue to have to drive innovative reasons to continue attracting consumer and business decisions to purchase new vehicles.' Toyota remained the country's best-selling brand in May by a considerable margin, selling 10,330 units, and the brand had nine cars in the top 30 sellers. Suzuki was in second place (5,536) ahead of Volkswagen (4,582), Hyundai (3,251) and Ford (2,932). The most popular vehicle was again the Toyota Hilux, with the rival Ford Ranger in second place. In third, and the best-selling passenger car, was the Suzuki Swift. Toyota's Corolla Cross was fourth overall. The best-selling Chinese car remained the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (eighth overall) ahead of the Haval Jolion (10th). NADA urges enhanced education and industry partnerships to combat youth unemployment in South Africa
One of the ways to address youth unemployment is through structured work-based learning; internships and learnerships. Image: Supplied With the latest unemployment figures revealing a deepening jobs crisis, partnerships between the education and private sectors are essential to South Africa's future. According to Statistics South Africa's Q1 2025 Labour Force Survey, the official unemployment rate has risen to 32.9%, while the expanded definition of unemployment, which includes discouraged job seekers, now sits at a staggering 43.1%. Among young South Africans aged 15–24, 59.4% are unemployed, the highest of any age group. Real-world skills 'South Africa's young people are talented, hungry to learn and eager to work, but they need the opportunity to gain real-world skills that translate into jobs,' said Thembinkosi Pantsi, Vice-Chairperson of the National Automobile Dealers' Association (NADA). One of the ways to address youth unemployment is through structured work-based learning. Internships and learnerships, particularly those linked to TVET colleges, offer students exposure to real working environments. NADA and its members have been active supporters of these initiatives, with many franchised dealers already partnering with educational institutions to host students, offer mentorship, and provide job placements. More needed However, Pantsi says this needs to happen at a much greater scale. 'The automotive sector, especially franchised dealers, is uniquely positioned to absorb learners, mentor them, and develop the kind of skills that are in short supply across the country. 'We cannot afford to continue losing this potential to unemployment.' NADA called on automotive employers, education authorities, and policymakers to ramp up support for workplace learning models. Investing in the future This includes expanding funding for stipends, streamlining partnerships between colleges and dealerships, and recognising employers that meaningfully contribute to skills development. 'Dealerships that invest in learnerships and mentorship are not just fulfilling a social mandate, they're investing in the future of their own businesses. Technicians, service advisors, parts specialists, and salespeople all require practical, hands-on experience to thrive. 'In a country where almost six in 10 young people are unemployed, every opportunity to gain experience matters. It's time to connect the dots between education and employment and drive real change from the ground up,' said Pantsi.

South Africa: New agreement brings car dealers and rental industry closer
The National Automobile Dealers' Association (Nada) and the Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (Savrala) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), formally establishing a partnership that has existed informally for years. "There are so many common areas that Nada and Savrala focus on, but until now, we've tackled them separately. This agreement changes that," says Brandon Cohen, Chairperson of Nada. "By working together, we become stronger in our engagements with key stakeholders such as government and financial institutions. "Road safety is a primary concern for both organisations, given that our members are responsible for supplying and using vehicles on South African roads—whether rented, leased, or sold. "There's so much we have in common, from driver habits to legislation, salvage, and insurance, that it's surprising it took this long to formalise our partnership. But now that we have, we can drive greater impact together." Savrala has always been a key stakeholder in the automotive sector, with its members sourcing vehicles directly from manufacturers and dealer networks. Over the years, Nada and Savrala have collaborated on various industry matters, frequently engaging with government, financial institutions, and other critical stakeholders. However, their joint efforts have never been formally structured—until now. Savrala plays a role in the South African economy, and when combined with the Retail Motor Industry Organisation's substantial influence in the aftermarket - contributing approximately 2% to GDP - the collective strength of these organisations will provide a more powerful voice in policy discussions. This collaboration will enable them to engage government and industry stakeholders with a unified position, ensuring that their shared interests are effectively represented.
