VW recalls 253 Polo sedans over faulty rear seat belts
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has announced a recall of 253 additional Volkswagen Polo sedan vehicles due to incorrectly fitted read seat belts. The vehicles were made available for sale from August 11 2022 to date, according to the manufacturer, Volkswagen of SA (VWSA). The NCC announced a recall of 18 vehicles last week, affected by a vehicle manufacturing issue caused by a mix-up of belt webbing. The NCC received another recall affecting an additional 253 vehicles. According to the supplier, the recall is due to a rear right seat belt fault. The left and right rear seat belts require inspection. 'As a result of the defect, the seat belts' restraint function may be severely limited in the event of an accident. This could lead to serious or fatal injuries for the driver,' the NCC said on Tuesday. 'Consumers are advised to contact any VWSA-approved dealership for a check and, if necessary, a replacement of the affected component.'

‘Med error didn't hit patient, no payout'
Sabita Rastogi had approach-ed the National Consumer Commission against Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi, and Dr Ritabh Kumar, a senior orthopaedic consultant. Her grievance was regarding the surgery for correction of a deformity known as Hallux Valgus (or Bunion Deformity), which affected both her feet. After regaining consciousness, she complained that her big toe had not been corrected; the second toe was elevated and deviating; and there was complete numbness in her left foot. She was informed that these were temporary effects due to incision and anaesthesia. She was discharged after two days before the wounds had healed. Subsequently, a proper dressing was done during followup, but Rastogi claimed that her condition had worsened due to fluid leakage and crusted fluid around the scars. She remained in pain for months and was dependent on painkillers due to the screw implanted in her joint, which continued to cause distress until it was eventually removed by another specialist. She also pointed out that negligence was clear as her blood group was recorded as O +ve even though it was O -ve. So she alleged negligence and deficiency in service. The hospital and the surgeon denied the allegations, stating that accepted medical practices had been followed while conducting the procedure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The intended correction was limited only to the big toe, and had been achieved. The Commission noted that the proper procedure had been followed after explaining the risks and obtaining informed consent. Also, there was no negligence in postoperative care. As regards the incorrect blood group, the Commission held that there was no actionable negligence. Consumer Commission warns South Africans after revealing rogue companies
The Consumer Commission published the names of suppliers who do not adhere to the Consumer Protection Act. The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has published a list of rogue suppliers who disappeared without a trace after accepting money from consumers and failing to deliver the goods or services. It urged South Africans to stay vigilant and ensure that they do not do business with them. A spokesperson for the NCC says in many cases, these suppliers vanished from their known addresses, while some shut down their websites, making it impossible for consumers to contact them for redress. 'Consumers filed complaints with the NCC alleging that they cannot obtain redress as the suppliers are unresponsive. The NCC's efforts to contact these suppliers to facilitate redress for consumers also failed and the preliminary assessment indicates that these suppliers either closed down or never existed.' ALSO READ: Droom Troue fined R250 000 for turning brides' wedding dreams into nightmares Disappearing suppliers attempting to evade law She says the NCC views this conduct as a deliberate attempt to evade the law and avoid accountability in terms of the Consumer Protection Act (CPA). The purpose and policy of the CPA include protecting consumers from unconscionable, unfair, unreasonable, unjust or improper trade descriptions and deceptive, misleading, unfair, or fraudulent conduct. The CPA also mandates that suppliers provide consumers with their addresses and communication channels to reach those suppliers. 'Consumers are urged to exercise caution when transacting with these suppliers. Suppliers who believe they were erroneously listed can contact the NCC. Meanwhile, the NCC appointed tracing agents to locate these suppliers.' Consumer Commission worried about trend of vehicle recalls
JOHANNESBURG - The National Consumer Commission is concerned by the number of recalls by car makers. Toyota, Volvo and VW have all recalled models of late, citing faults that could pose a danger to motorists. The recalls including 159 VW Golf 8s sold between April and June with a defect in the front seat belt. Volvo has recalled 26 XC90 plug in hybrid models for this year and more than 6000 motorists driving the Hino 500s available between May 2017 and December last year have been asked to return them to dealerships. 'The NCC has noted the recent rise of recalls of motor vehicles or related components of such motor vehicles and is engaging affected suppliers for further information to determine the required steps to address this. "In the meantime, consumers with affected vehicles are urged to urgently book their vehicles with their nearest approved dealerships for a thorough vehicle check, at no cost', said Acting Commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu.
