Upholding respect for our flag

National pride: A big Malaysian flag waving against the background of the Kuala Lumpur city centre skyline to mark the Merdeka month celebrations. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should treat and fly the Jalur Gemilang with respect and dignity during the ongoing Merdeka Month celebrations, say unity advocates. National Unity Advisory Council member Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the national flag must be hoisted correctly and in accordance with guidelines. 'Before raising the flag, it is important to ensure it is in good condition and positioned appropriately. 'Previously, we have seen instances where the flag was displayed incorrectly, leading to controversy and unfortunate politicisation of the issue. 'Such mistakes must be avoided at all costs,' he said yesterday. The 68th National Day celebration on Aug 31 will be held at Dataran Putrajaya, with the Malaysia Day celebration on Sept 16 to be hosted in Penang under the theme 'Malaysia Madani: Rakyat Disantuni'. Lee said flying the Jalur Gemilang is a matter of national pride. 'I also urge those responsible to replace any torn, faded or tattered flags currently on display,' he said, adding that the people should take this opportunity to renew their patriotic spirit. Unity advocate Anas Zubedy said Malaysians should always be mindful when displaying the national flag. 'The colours of our flag reflect core national values of unity, sincerity, courage and dignity,' said Anas. 'By responding with compassion and wisdom, we show the strength of our Malaysian identity. 'Let this Merdeka be a time where we fly the flag not just proudly, but with understanding and with our hearts,' he added. According to the Information Department's guidebook Bendera Kita Jalur Gemilang, the use of the national flag in forms such as clothing should be avoided, with the exception of the Merdeka Month celebration. The flag must not be used in ways that are seen as demeaning to the Jalur Gemilang, such as being made into tablecloths, headscarves, umbrellas, songkok, hats, bath towels, cushion covers and other similar items, the guidebook stated. Flags that are faded, torn or in poor condition should not be flown, as they are considered worn-out, and doing so would be disrespectful, it said. The guidebook states that such flags should not be disposed of in rubbish bins but be destroyed in a respectful manner, such as by burning them privately.

Tun Sambanthan's Legacy Still Guides Unity Policies

PETALING JAYA, July 15 (Bernama) -- The values and spirit of the late Tun V.T. Sambanthan in fostering racial unity continue to inspire the formulation of national unity policies today, said National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang. He said Sambanthan's inclusive approach proved that Malaysia's ethnic diversity is not a barrier, but a strength that should be celebrated and embraced. 'Tun Sambanthan envisioned Malaysia's future not in colour, race or language, but through a shared commitment to nation-building. He was a leader who rose above racial lines in pursuit of national ideals,' he said when officiating the Commemorating Tun V.T. Sambanthan: Malaysia's First National Unity Minister programme here today. Also present were Deputy National Unity Minister K. Saraswathy, National Archives director-general Datuk Jaafar Sidek Abdul Rahman and members of the late leader's family. Aaron said that as the first National Unity Minister, Sambanthan laid the foundation for early policies that upheld national harmony as a key pillar of society. 'He believed unity was not merely a slogan, but a way of life that must be instilled from a young age, strengthened within society and embedded in national policies,' he said. Aaron added that although there was no formal body like today's National Unity Advisory Council during Sambanthan's time, his efforts to promote interethnic dialogue laid important groundwork for current approaches to unity. He also urged the younger generation to emulate Sambanthan's leadership, rooted in service and sincerity. 'To Malaysia's youth, Tun Sambanthan's legacy offers key lessons. First, leadership is not about position or power, but about service and integrity. Second, in an increasingly complex world, we must defend the values of inclusivity and justice,' he said.

Collaboration needed to address 3R issues

PUTRAJAYA: Integrated action and inter-agency collaboration must be effectively mobilised to address 3R (religion, race and royalty) issues, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof ( pic ). This was among matters agreed upon at the National Unity Advisory Council meeting yesterday, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister. The council also reviewed findings of a study carried out by the police on unity issues from the aspect of security. The study revealed 44 3R-related cases that were reported between January and April this year. Fadillah, who is also council chairman, emphasised the importance of firm and effective action against provocation and racial sentiment on social media. He called on enforcement agencies such as the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to act swiftly, urging all government agencies to work together comprehensively to safeguard the country's harmony and unity. Meanwhile, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said his ministry would organise a conference next month to provide a platform to discuss approaches, strategies and policies aimed at strengthening a united and progressive Malaysia. The meeting also saw the National Service Training Department presenting the re-implementation of the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) involving citizens aged between 17 and 35. The government had earlier decided that the basic PLKN 3.0 training at public universities, polytechnics and teacher education institutes would commence with the intake of students for the 2026/2027 academic session. PLKN 3.0 began on Jan 12 with 142 volunteer trainees aged 18 to 25, including 44 women. For the second and third series, over 1,000 participants nationwide are expected to take part from May 11 to June 24 and Sept 7 to Oct 21, respectively. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin told the Dewan Rakyat in February that the government would spend a total of RM2,000 on each trainee under PLKN 3.0 and this amount was lower than what was spent for PLKN 1.0 and 2.0.
