Ten netball teams battled it out for the RM1,000 cash prize. Ampang Jaya's first car-free day this year saw a lively start with more than 500 residents hitting the streets. The council's car-free day programme also included a leisure walk at Padang Perbandaran MPAJ in Pandan Indah. Ahmad Farid Ab Aziz walked away with the champion title and RM500. Johor mulls lowering youth age limit to 16

JOHOR BARU: The Johor government plans to introduce a minimum youth age as early as 16 to provide early exposure to teenagers regarding the environment after school. State youth, sports, entrepreneur development and cooperatives committee chairman Mohd Hairi Mad Shah said that by introducing a lower youth age at 16, teenagers will have the opportunity to join youth associations, which in turn ensures that these associations have strong successors. 'The Johor government is currently studying ways to further empower our youth, starting from the age of 16. 'When they start fostering the spirit of associations at 16, they will not be surprised by the culture of associations after they leave the school environment,' he said after launching the National Youth Day 2025 celebration at the state level in conjunction with the 2025 Johor Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) yesterday, Bernama reported. He said a consultation session with the Education Department, the Youth Council and related agencies will be held to discuss the matter, which is expected to be resolved in the near future. Meanwhile, he said the government is not yet ready to lower the youth age limit to 30 from 40 as to be enforced at the national level next year and will review the matter in depth.

Minister: Youths vital to safeguard Sarawak's harmony, unity

Abdul Karim (standing, seventh right) and other guests pose with the award recipients in a group photo. – Ukas photo KUCHING (May 18): Youths play a key role in maintaining Sarawak's harmony and unity — core values that continue to be a hallmark of the state's multiracial and multicultural identity, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development highlighted that the strong bond among young Sarawakians from various ethnic and religious backgrounds reflects the state's social strength. 'The values of togetherness and mutual respect practised by our youth are a true testament that Sarawak deserves to be called the 'State of Unity'. 'It is, therefore, crucial that all efforts be mobilised to ensure this peaceful and united environment continues to thrive,' he said when officiating the state-level National Youth Day 2025 celebration at Serian Conference Centre (SCC) yesterday. This year's celebration carries the theme 'Yakin Boleh' (We Believe We Can), highlighting the government's confidence in the potential and capabilities of the younger generation. Adding on, Abdul Karim stressed that youths are valuable assets to the country, urging them to be actively involved in national development across all sectors. 'We want them to contribute meaningfully, not just in economic and social spheres but also in shaping identity and patriotism,' he said. He also emphasised the need to close the social gap between youths and the community through civic and volunteer programmes. 'Through active participation in community-based activities, youths can cultivate empathy, leadership and a sense of unity — qualities that will make them more aware of the needs of society and the nation.' Abdul Karim said the Sarawak government remains committed to empowering youth development through a range of strategic initiatives and programmes, such as collaboration with the National Department of Youth and Sports, Saberkas, and the Youth and Sports Ministry. Yesterday's event featured a variety of activities including an award presentation for outstanding youths, agency exhibitions, and interactive engagements. Also present were Abdul Karim's deputy Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and the ministry permanent secretary Morshidi Frederick. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Kuching lead youths

Dr Zaliha dismisses Rafizi's claims, says PKR election committee reviews complaints diligently

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR election committee chairman Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has dismissed Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's claims that she failed to manage the committee in addressing irregularities and other issues surrounding the party's election process. Dr Zaliha, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), described the claims made by the incumbent PKR deputy president as merely his personal opinion. She stressed that the committee is diligently reviewing all complaints received. "That is (Rafizi's) personal view," she told reporters after officiating National Youth Day 2025 celebration for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Dr Zaliha also refuted claims that the committee had neglected its duties, stressing that all grievances are being addressed in accordance with party procedures. She said the committee has received over 280 complaints, which are currently being scrutinised. "We have received over 280 complaints covering various stages, including nominations, campaigning, and branch-level results. "Each is being scrutinised, and action has been taken where necessary. "I strongly deny suggestions that we are not paying attention. We take every complaint seriously, and several have already been acted upon," she added. In his Yang Bakar Menteri podcast, Rafizi alleged that the committee had failed to address key issues, including instances where candidates from other parties were able to contest in PKR elections. Following this, PKR's secretary-general, Fuziah Salleh, said that on May 11, it expelled 28 members, including elected leaders, for holding membership in other political parties. The committee also noted that the audit report cited by Rafizi found the party's e-voting system to be secure and free of irregularities. On April 17, Dr Zaliha also dismissed allegations of "invisible hands" influencing the election results, stating that the committee has been closely monitoring the process and has not observed any such interference. The PKR National Congress is scheduled from May 21 to 24, with the main polling day on May 23.

Penang National Youth Day programmes ‘Yakin Boleh' attract 70,000 attendees, says Gooi

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will celebrate the state-level National Youth Day 2025 on May 17 and 18 at the Hin Bus Depot. State youth committee chairman Daniel Gooi said the theme this year would be 'Yakin Boleh' as a symbol of the younger generation challenging themselves in facing all odds, which is in line with the National Youth Policy of bringing down the age to 30 from 2026. "There will be various programmes including a career carnival and TVET, e-Sports and sports activities and lifestyle programmes," said Gooi at a press conference at Komtar on Thursday (May 15). "We are targeting around 70,000 youth to take part in the programme, which will also feature interactive activities, competition, sales, workshops, voluntary programmes, including the 'Anugerah Perdana Belia Negara' (state level) as a recognition of individuals and exemplary youth organisations. Gooi said the youth day promises a big impact on youth and social development, as well as bolstering the economy and boosting patriotism and leadership in the younger generation.
