Nazrul's ‘Lakshan Geet' translations to be on display

Kolkata: Celebrating the completion of Kazi Nazrul Islam's 125th birth anniversary, Jibansmriti Archive will showcase two of his rare manuscripts that trace his foray into writing 'Lakshan Geet' in Bengali. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This is the first time manuscripts of Nazrul's translation of 'Lakshan Geet', to be put up at an exhibition from June 1 to 4, will be displayed for free public viewing. Founder and curator of Jibansmriti Archive Arindam Saha Sardar told TOI Raja Nawab Ali's 'Marif-ul-Naghmat', written in Arabic-influenced Urdu, probably came into Nazrul's possession in the mid-1930s. "Nazrul deciphered the contents of this book despite the language barrier. It remains unknown whether he sought help from an Urdu speaker. In this book, the poet chanced upon invaluable classical music resources, including 'Lakshan Geet' for over 150 ragas. His 'Sur o Shruti' is a slightly condensed Bengali translation of some portions of the book, 'Swar o Shruti'. This section has his translation of 'Lakshan Geet' into Bengali," Sardar said. 'Lakshan Geet' in Hindi refers to a song, the lyrics of which describe the complete characteristics of a raga. In the fag end of his life, Nazrul took to writing 'Lakshan Geet' in Bengali. He wrote six songs, one on each of the six 'thaat' of Indian classical music. But he fell ill soon after. In 2023, author and Nazrul researcher Ziad Ali donated two pages of the manuscript of Nazrul's 'Sur o Shruti' to the archive's Nazrul-Bhandar section. "These pages of Nazrul's translation of 'Lakshan Geet' were donated for preservation and to promote the study of Nazrul. The pages testify to the depth of the poet's constant exploration and experimentation in classical music. We are yet to get Nazrul's 'Lakshan Geet' manuscripts though they are available in the printed format," he said.

Some Putra Heights house owners in Malaysia still waiting for aid after gas pipeline explosion

Some Putra Heights house owners in Malaysia still waiting for aid after gas pipeline explosion SUBANG JAYA - It has been almost two months since a gas pipeline explosion rocked Putra Heights in Subang Jaya but several affected residents are still waiting for aid that was promised to them. These include the RM2,000 (S$604) a month from the Selangor government to cover rental for up to six months, RM500 in schooling aid from the Education Ministry and access to a car for personal use. The April 1 explosion destroyed 81 homes, badly damaged 57 and partially damaged 81. Resident Azam Mokhtar said many homeowners had to rent elsewhere. 'We were told that the Selangor government would disburse the first three months' rental assistance in a lump sum but there has been no update.' On April 30, it was reported that RM2.73 million in rental assistance has been allocated for 455 families affected by the disaster. Selangor's cheif minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the number was an increase from the previously reported 396 families, following several requests, applications and ongoing investigations by the authorities. 'The rent will be transferred directly into the bank accounts of the affected families', he said. Mr Amirudin stated that 214 families had received the aid, while they were waiting for verification of bank accounts, identity cards and other related documents for the remaining number. Mr Azam said they were also told the gas pipeline will resume operations soon. 'We are in the dark about what safety measures will be in place,' he said. Fellow resident Nazrul Aziz said many who lost their vehicles in the blast lacked transport after the expiration of the free car scheme. According to media report, several automobile manufacturers had offered victims free use of a car for a month. Mr Nazrul said now that the period had expired, they had to pay between RM1,000 and RM3,000 a month to extend the car rental. He added that 'this is causing us financial strain as we still have to pay loan instalments for our destroyed cars'. The father of two also questioned plans to rebuild the damaged homes. It was reported that Malaysia's housing government would undertake repairs of homes that were completely destroyed, but Mr Nazrul said that owners were told that repairs would not involve wiring and utilities installation. Interim government bans former ruling party

THE interim government has banned all activities of the former ruling Awami League party headed by former influential prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted last year in a mass uprising. Asif Nazrul, the country's law affairs adviser, said on Saturday that the interim Cabinet headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus decided to ban the party's activities online and elsewhere under the country's Anti-Terrorism Act. The ban would stay in place until a special tribunal completes a trial of the party and its leaders over the deaths of hundreds of students and other protesters during an anti-government uprising in July and August last year. 'This decision is aimed at ensuring national security and sovereignty, protection of activists of the July movement, and plaintiffs and witnesses involved in the tribunal proceedings,' Nazrul told reporters after a special Cabinet meeting. Nazrul said the meeting also expanded the scope for trying any political parties involving charges of killing during the anti-Hasina protest being handled by the International Crimes Tribunal. He said a government notification regarding the ban would be published soon with details. Hasina and many of her senior party colleagues have been accused of murder in many cases after her ouster last year. Hasina has been in exile in India since Aug 5 as her official residence was stormed by protesters soon after she left the country. The United Nations human rights office in a report said in February that up to 1,400 people may have been killed during three weeks of anti-Hasina protest. — AP
