Signs Your ‘Soul Is Tired' — Sprituality Vs Science: Which Side Are You On?
Last Updated:
Dr. Neeti Kaushik, an educationist who shares insights on personal and spiritual growth, explained how to recognise when your 'soul is tired.'
Feeling drained is something everyone experiences after a long workday, a sleepless night, or a hectic week. Usually, rest, nutritious food, and a bit of self-care help recharge. But sometimes, the fatigue runs deeper than it seems.
This is the kind of fatigue that affects the heart, mind and spirit. It is what many describe as when the 'soul is tired." Recently, Dr Neeti Kaushik, an educationist who shares personal and spiritual growth content, explained how to recognise this state in a video on Instagram.
'3 Signs Your Soul Is Tired'
Explaining about the first sign, Dr Kaushik said, 'You sleep for a long time, but even so, when you wake up, you feel tired." She also shared the reason behind this is that 'your body has rested, but the soul hasn't" because there is no peace, whether it is within you or outside.
Next, she spoke about withdrawing from people, even those you deeply care for. 'You avoid people, even those close to you, because your heart is crowded with too many overwhelming emotions," she explained.
According to her, these signs mean only one thing: you're burnt out. 'You're doing too much. There's too much weight. Lighten up, slow down and give time to yourself," she advised.
The Science Behind Feeling Tired Despite Enough Sleep
While Dr Kaushik's take focuses on the spiritual aspect, science points to several possible physical and psychological reasons for constant tiredness.
Sometimes, even after a long night's sleep, you can wake up feeling just as tired as when you went to bed. This can happen if your sleep quality is poor. For example, due to noise, light in the room, an uncomfortable mattress or conditions like restless legs syndrome can disturb your rest.
Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep or irregular sleep schedules that disrupt your body's natural rhythm can also be factors.
In some cases, underlying health issues like anaemia, thyroid problems, diabetes or heart conditions may cause this constant fatigue. Mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, high stress levels or burnout can add to the problem.
Even certain lifestyle habits like drinking too much caffeine or alcohol, not moving enough during the day or leading a mostly sedentary life, can make you feel drained despite spending enough hours in bed.
Why You May Avoid People
Sometimes, avoiding people, even those you love, isn't about not caring for them. It can happen when social situations feel exhausting or overwhelming. This withdrawal can be linked to conditions such as social anxiety disorder, depression, avoidant personality disorder or schizoid personality disorder. It may also be a response to past trauma, where being around others feels unsafe or emotionally heavy. In many cases, people pull away simply because their minds and emotions are overloaded and they need space to recover.

When Nothing Feels Connected
There are times when life feels strangely distant, as if you are watching it from the outside. This emotional disconnection can be linked to conditions such as Depersonalization-derealization disorder, where people feel detached from themselves or their surroundings or dissociative amnesia, which involves gaps in memory. It may also occur in dissociative identity disorder, depression, anxiety disorders or during severe burnout.
