Real reason for hole in plane windows that's 'freaking out' passengers
Travel experts have explained the reason for the tiny holes. Have you ever been sitting on an aeroplane, excited for your holiday, only to feel a rush of panic after spotting a hole in your window? Over the years, travellers have been left confused about the purpose of the mysterious hole, with many claiming it 'freaks them out'. According to experts at Netflights, the small window hole is essential for a safe flight and is actually a very functional feature. Amanda Parker at Netflights said: "The small hole, known as the 'breathing hole' or 'bleed hole', is located in the centre panel. Although this hole may seem insignificant, its function is vital, as it lets the pressure between the passenger cabin and the centre panel equalise. "Aircraft windows are composed of three panes of acrylic glass: the outer pane, the centre pane, and the inner pane, which is the one that you can touch. "During flight, the pressure inside the cabin is maintained at a safe and comfortable level for passengers, while the pressure outside decreases dramatically as the aircraft climbs to cruising altitudes." Amanda said the hole actually regulates and balances the pressure between the outer panel and the centre panel. Without it, the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the aircraft could place excessive stress on the outer panels, increasing the risk of damage or, in the worst case, structural failure. Benefits of the small aircraft hole according to Netflights Pressure regulation and balancing When the cabin begins to decrease in pressure, the small hole allows the pressure to be distributed evenly across the window panels. This protects the window, but also ensures that the outer pane takes the change in pressure, which protects the inner pane, which is the pane in contact with the passengers. Prevention of fogging and freezing. In addition to balancing pressure, these small holes in aircraft windows serve another crucial function, which is preventing the windows from fogging or freezing. At the altitudes at which commercial aircraft fly, outside temperatures can drop dramatically. Without the breather hole, the temperature difference between the warm interior and the cold exterior could cause moisture to condense on the glass and eventually freeze! Which is not what you would expect on an airplane. The small hole allows for a slight airflow between the panels, which helps prevent moisture build-up and ensures that the windows remain clear. This is especially important for passengers who enjoy looking out the window during flight, as well as for the crew in case of emergencies requiring outward visibility.

Tiktok hack to get free flight upgrade: does it really work?
One frequent flier has had over 2.5 million views, sharing his top tips to bag a free upgrade when you fly. He says: 'A little charm and confidence go a long way' and advises picking up small gifts like chocolate at the airport and boarding the plane last. "Hand the flight attendants the gifts, with added charisma, as you board, and wait for the magic of a free upgrade to happen." On the post, he's not given an upgrade as such, but his seat is switched to an empty row and he receives free snacks and Champagne, presumably worth more than the value of the snacks. Viewers seem impressed, with one comment saying: "as ex-cabin crew I can confirm this works". But do these Tiktok free upgrade hacks actually work? Amanda Parker at Netflights says: 'The travel hack of buying flight attendants a gift, and sweet-talking them when boarding the plane has gone viral. Kindness will always be appreciated by airline staff, so small gestures like snacks or gifts won't go unnoticed. "However, the chances of receiving a complimentary upgrade just by handing over a box of chocolates might be slim. "Free upgrades are usually determined by strict criteria, including frequent flyer status, ticket class, availability, and airline policies, unfortunately, not by last-minute sweet talk as you board the plane. "The gift and sweet-talk hack may work, so it's worth a try; but, we warn you not to get your hopes up, as these moments are the exception, not the rule. You may just strike lucky if your flight attendant likes chocolate M&Ms." Recommended reading: 3 ways to get a free flight upgrade or (free perks when flying) 1. Join loyalty programmes Passengers are most likely to bag a free upgrade by taking advantage of frequent flyer initiatives. Airlines reward loyal and frequent customers, so take advantage of these deals. Even if you don't fly frequently, some credit cards allow you to earn points that count towards upgrades. Over time, this can significantly boost your chances of an upgrade. 2. Travel in off-peak periods You can increase your chances of upgrades and free perks when traveling in off-peak hours and days. Flights are quieter, so they tend to have more empty seats in Premium cabins, which can increase your chances of being upgraded. It's advised to avoid flying in school holidays and Friday evenings or weekends. Midweek flights at midday are typically quieter flights! 3. Be polite and have good manners Good manners won't guarantee an upgrade, but they never hurt anyone. Always treat flight staff with respect, regardless of whether you want a free upgrade or not. Being kind can make you stand out, so a small gift like chocolates might be remembered, but even if it doesn't come with a seat upgrade, it's a gesture your flight attendant will appreciate.

Travel expert issues warning against trying viral 'free upgrade' hack
Social media is brimming with various travel hacks and tips, but not all of the cheeky suggestions are recommended. A passenger went viral on TikTok recently with his advice on how to get a 'free upgrade' on a flight. Content creator Henry Wade, @henryjwade, shared a video on the popular app and filmed himself walking through an airport, demonstrating his 'hack'. 'Start by picking up some snacks or a small gift, just a little something to make a big impact,' Henry explained, as the camera panned to him purchasing treats. 'Easy bit is done, now you've got to make sure you board last and then as soon as you get to the gate and approach the cabin crew, pass them over the goods and just be super nice to them, show them charisma, show them some charm, show them a bit of banter,' he went on. 'And then, just wait for the magic to happen,' the TikToker added. By the end of the video, Henry had secured an entire row of seats to himself, some snacks and a glass of champagne with his kind gesture. However, the tip has divided some. Travel expert Amanda Parker from Netflights advised it may not actually be so effective. By the end of the video, Henry had secured an entire row of seats to himself, some snacks and a glass of champagne with his kind gesture of treats for the crew members 'Kindness will always be appreciated by airline staff, so small gestures like snacks or gifts won't go unnoticed,' Amanda said. She added: 'However, the chances of receiving a complimentary upgrade just by handing over a box of chocolates might be slim.' The expert explained how upgrades are determined, and that even with some treats there might not always be availability. Amanda elaborated: 'Free upgrades are usually determined by strict criteria, including frequent flyer status, ticket class, availability, and airline policies, unfortunately, not by last-minute sweet talk as you board the plane! 'The gift and sweet-talk hack may work, so it's worth a try; but, we warn you not to get your hopes up, as these moments are the exception, not the rule! 'You may just strike lucky if your flight attendant likes chocolate M&M's!' Other recommendations might have a higher success rate, like joining loyalty programmes with airlines or travelling in off-peak. Simple things such as being polite to flight attendants and crew are always appreciated too. However, the tip has divided some and travel expert Amanda Parker from Netflights advised it may not actually be so effective (stock image) Henry's video received a mixed response and one viewer claimed: 'As ex cabin crew I can confirm this works.' While someone else quipped: 'Tried this. They took my snacks and said have a nice flight.' 'As a cabin crew unfortunately it don't work,' another chimed in. 'I asked once during check in and they upgraded me to business,' one person shared.

Travel expert debunks 'free upgrade' hack that has fooled the internet
Netflights travel expert Amanda Parker tackles the viral 'free upgrade' flight myth that's circulating TikTok, offering three alternatives to boosting your luck for freebies A travel expert has addressed a popular TikTok hack that promises to upgrade your flights for free. With the trend going viral this summer as jetsetters buckle up for a holiday abroad, Brits are desperate to know just how to save their coins whilst maxing out their luck. One flier has circulated on TikTok, accumulating over 2.5 million views for sharing his means of a free upgrade. He said: "A little charm and confidence go a long way". Instructing viewers to go to the lengths of buying chocolates at the airport and boarding last, the user suggested fliers charmingly gift the flight attendants upon board for a magical free upgrade. Splitting viewers in two over whether this trick really works or not has led to flying experts at Netflights coming forward to shed light on this gift-theory and whether sweet-talking is worth a shot. Netflights' Amanda Parker said: "The travel hack of buying flight attendants a gift, and sweet-talking them when boarding the plane has gone viral. Kindness will always be appreciated by airline staff, so small gestures like snacks or gifts won't go unnoticed. One TikTok comment shares, "as ex-cabin crew I can confirm this works". She went on, saying: "Free upgrades are usually determined by strict criteria, including frequent flyer status, ticket class, availability, and airline policies, unfortunately, not by last-minute sweet talk as you board the plane!". "The gift and sweet-talk hack may work, so it's worth a try; but, we warn you not to get your hopes up, as these moments are the exception, not the rule! You may just strike lucky if your flight attendant likes chocolate M&M's!" As an alternative, Netflight provided their expert tips on how to really up your chances of that sought-after upgrade and 'freebies': Join loyalty programmes Frequent fliers and loyal customers are most likely to bag the free upgrades so take advantage of all those summer trips by joining an airlines reward scheme. Netflight adds that "even if you don't fly frequently, some credit cards allow you to earn points that count towards upgrades. Over time, this can significantly boost your chances of an upgrade". Travel in off-peak periods You can boost your luck by traveling in off-peak hours and days. Less popular times mean flights are quieter, therefore there are more Premium seats available - your chances suddenly peaking. Netflight suggests "to avoid flying in school holidays and Friday evenings or weekends" and to opt for "midweek flights at midday" as they are "typically quieter". Be polite and have good manners Seems simple but whilst politeness won't equal an instant upgrade, they never hurt. Staff should always be treated with respect, no matter whether you're pinning for that upgrade or not. That being said, Netflight agrees that "being kind can make you stand out, so a small gift like chocolates might be remembered". Either way, your flight attendants will definitely appreciate it.
