5 of the best walks with picturesque views in County Durham to enjoy at Easter
Easter is the perfect time to shake off the winter blues and embrace the great outdoors – and there's no better place to do it than in County Durham. With spring in full bloom and (hopefully) brighter weather continuing, it's a brilliant opportunity to explore some of the region's most scenic routes. Whether you're after riverside rambles, heritage trails, or peaceful woodland paths, County Durham has it all. We've rounded up five of the best walks to enjoy over Easter, ideal for families, solo explorers, or a relaxed bank holiday stroll. Distance: 7.2km (one way) Time: Approx. 1 hr 44 mins Start: Car park off A688, Bishop Auckland This former railway line offers a peaceful, easy-going walk through the countryside, perfect for a springtime stretch of the legs. The route follows a straight track beyond Coundon Station and towards Spennymoor, taking in open fields, hedgerows, and glimpses of local wildlife. Be mindful – if we've had Easter showers, the path can get muddy, so bring suitable footwear. Here is the full route. Distance: 7.2km (circular) Time: Approx. 1 hr 38 mins Start: Hardwick Park car park, near Sedgefield A wonderful Easter walk for all ages, this route takes you through landscaped parkland, across the River Skerne, and through wooded trails bursting with spring growth. The highlight is Hardwick Hall's gardens – perfect for a picnic or even an Easter egg hunt with the kids. This walk is best enjoyed from April to July, making Easter a sweet spot for visiting. Here is the full route. Distance: 5.2km (circular) Time: Approx. 1 hr 18 mins Start: Green Lane, Durham For a walk with a bit of everything – riverside peace, local history, and stunning nature – this shorter trail ticks all the boxes. You'll follow the River Wear through Pelaw Woods, pass by the historic Old Durham Gardens, and circle around Broom Hill. It's a lovely option for a sunny Easter Sunday stroll, especially with the daffodils out and the sound of birdsong in the woods. Here is the full route. Distance: 6km (circular) Time: Approx. 1 hr 33 mins Start: Near Newton Hall, Durham This moderately challenging walk combines old railway lines, tranquil countryside, and the bird-filled Brasside Pond nature reserve. It's a top pick for wildlife lovers this Easter – look out for waterfowl, rabbits, and early wildflowers. It can get boggy after rain, so pack your walking boots and maybe a thermos of tea for a well-earned break along the way. Here is the full route. Recommended: Two arrested after A1 pursuit crash that saw seven officers rushed to hospital Warning issued after children seen throwing aerosols on open fires in woodland Neto Borges injury timeframe confirmation & Carrick 'hope' after Middlesbrough blow Distance: 8.4km (circular) Time: Approx. 2 hrs 3 mins Start: Near Harrowgate Hill, Darlington Looking to go the extra mile over the Easter break? This scenic route offers a peaceful escape with sweeping views, open farmland, and riverside beauty along the River Skerne. The trail is a mix of flat and gently rolling terrain and is suitable for most walkers. Bring a camera – the views at this time of year are stunning, especially if the spring flowers are out in force. Here is the full route.
