Miley Cyrus Recalls ‘Extremely Excruciating' Medical Emergency During Show

There's a 'traumatic' backstory to ' 'New Year's Eve Party' NBC special when she rang in 2023 on the cusp of a medical emergency and health scare. The musician interviewed with Zane Lowe ahead of the release of her new album, 'Something Beautiful,' and detailed the distressing and 'extremely excruciating' experience. The backstory had remained undisclosed until Cyrus' revelation, as everyone could remember her zestful takeover of the stage alongside her co-host and godmother, Dolly Parton. That night, the dynamic duo performed several hits, with multiple other guests and 'Saturday Night Live' stars joining them. Miley Cyrus' night didn't quite go as planned for her NBC special 'New Year's Eve Party' when she suffered from a 'medical emergency' due to an ovarian cyst rupture. In her interview with Zane Lowe, she detailed her 'pretty traumatic experience' on the show, which was contrary to what everybody saw. 'I had a, uh, ovarian cyst rupture,' Cyrus told Lowe while recalling her unpleasant night as she rang in 2023. 'We didn't know exactly what was going on, so we did it, but it was pretty traumatic, cause it was extremely excruciating,' she detailed. The Grammy winner revealed that she 'did the show anyway,' but claimed it had been 'really, really hard on me.' In fact, it was so distressing for her that she even considered discontinuing her music career — a journey she embarked on as a kid. But something the show's executive producer and 'SNL' creator, Lorne Michaels, told Cyrus helped her change her mind. In the interview, she recounted having dinner with Michaels afterward when he 'said something that now has stuck' with her. 'He goes, 'Six months, everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild,'' Miley Cyrus narrated as she remembered their conversation. Cyrus claimed she knew it was far beyond her 'amount of time that I was able to shut down.' She continued how Michaels further shared with her about the countless artists who have told him about 'quitting music,' as he explained to her that everyone 'has these traumatic experiences.' Ultimately, the 32-year-old singer recanted on her intrusive thoughts about pulling the plug on her remarkable career and gave her fans the music they deserved. Miley Cyrus Reveals She Suffered From an Ovarian Cyst Rupture During a Live Performance

Miley Cyrus opened up about suffering from an ovarian cyst rupture while hosting her New Year's Eve Party special in 2023. 'I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne [Michaels] when I was doing my New Year's show,' Cyrus, 32, said during a Wednesday, May 21, interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe. 'I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture." An ovarian cyst rupture is when a fluid-filled sac on or inside an ovary bursts open and causes severe pain and bleeding inside the pelvis, per the Mayo Clinic. At the time, Cyrus "didn't know exactly what was going on," so she proceeded with the show. Cyrus hosted alongside godmother Dolly Parton and performed duets with Parton, Sia and Paris Hilton. 'It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway,' Cyrus recalled. 'But it was really, really hard on me.' Miley Cyrus Details How Sobriety Journey Has Changed Her 'Entire Life' Over the Years The health scare isn't the only challenge Cyrus overcame. During her chat with Lowe, 51, she shared the importance of maintaining her sobriety. 'I've learned this about myself over the years. The sobriety is like, that's like my God,' the singer said. 'I need it, I live for it. I mean that it's changed my entire life.' Cyrus stopped using marijuana in 2017 and drinking alcohol in 2020. While speaking to 51-year-old Lowe, Cyrus recalled the last time they spoke back in November 2020. 'When you came to my psychedelic house that was painted black in hidden hills, where everything is like all white homes and equestrian. And then I painted mine black and rainbow … I no longer live there,' she said. 'But I was happy you came and saw me in that space. And I was thinking about it a lot today as I was on my way here, because I was so close to who's sitting here right now. But there was just life. It had more to teach me. It had more lessons.' During their last chat, Cyrus confessed that she 'fell off' her sobriety journey at the time. However, Cyrus doesn't regret the mistake since it led her to where she is now. Miley Cyrus Has Girl's Night With Mom Tish at 'SNL50: The Homecoming Concert' After Billy Ray Drama 'I know I needed to fall one more time. And I just, I had to. It just never would have happened this way. I just never would have been sitting here. And there were times in that section from where I've seen you before,' she said. 'And there were times in that section from where I've seen you last time and now that they hurt, I'm not proud of them. Definitely not my best moments, not some of my best work, any of that.' Cyrus added that the struggle led her to write 'Flowers,' for which she won her first Grammy. 'It all led me to writing 'Flowers,' which then was some sort of just key right into the lock of all healing,' she said. 'It healed me so much.'

Miley Cyrus, on the verge of a new era, reveals 'traumatic' health scare: 'excruciating'

LOS ANGELES — For Miley Cyrus, an 'extremely excruciating' pain preceded 'Something Beautiful.' The pop star and Disney channel alumna this week spoke candidly about her mental, emotional and physical health, unveiling that she powered through a 'medical emergency' during her live 'New Year's Eve Party' TV special three years ago. The Grammy-winning 'Flowers' musician said she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture. 'We didn't know exactly what was going on, but it was pretty traumatic, 'cause it was extremely excruciating,' she told DJ and Apple Music interviewer Zane Lowe in a far-ranging conversation published Wednesday. 'I did the show anyways.' The 'Wrecking Ball' and 'Party in the U.S.A' singer, 32, rang in 2023 for NBC, co-hosting her 'Miley's New Year's Eve Party' with godmother and music icon Dolly Parton. During the special, produced by 'Saturday Night Live' boss Lorne Michaels, Cyrus performed live, taking the stage alongside Parton, Paris Hilton, Sia and Fletcher. Latto, Rae Sremmurd and Liily were also among the musical acts who joined the New Year's celebration. Cyrus, who said she couldn't pass up an opportunity to work with both Michaels and Parton, told Lowe the holiday gig 'was really hard on me' and did not go into further detail about the health scare. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs found in an ovary or on its surface. Cysts are common and can often be harmless and cause little to no discomfort, but larger cysts can bring about symptoms including pelvic pain, abdominal pressure and bloating, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cysts can 'become twisted or burst open,' causing 'pain and bleeding inside the pelvis.' The 'Hannah Montana' star also opened up about a polyp on her vocal cords, which makes live performances feel like 'running a marathon with the weights on,' and her sobriety journey. Cyrus has been in the public eye since childhood and in recent years has spoken about her struggles with addiction. In December 2020, she told Rolling Stone about her drug and alcohol use and how the young, drug-related deaths of artists including Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix prompted her to 'pull my[self] together before I'm 27.' For Cyrus, sobriety hasn't always been a straightforward path, but this week she said 'sobriety is … like my God.' 'I need it. I live for [it]. It's changed my entire life,' she said before acknowledging there was a moment she 'fell apart' in recent years. 'I was so close to who's sitting here right now but … [life] had more lessons for me.' Cyrus, who won her first career Grammy for 'Flowers' in 2024, is on the verge of a new, theatrical and fashionable era. Her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful' is due May 30 and will be accompanied by a film in June. 'This era marks another bold artistic evolution for Miley, blending music and film into an immersive experience,' according to an announcement shared to her Instagram page. 'Something Beautiful,' Cyrus said in the Apple Music chat, ' couldn't [be] any more personal to me.' She added: 'Every single string, sound… sequin, strand of hair, eye lash has been considered and created not only something that I love but something that I'm excited to share with [fans.]' ©2025 Los Angeles Times. Miley Cyrus reveals she ruptured an ovarian cyst during New Year's Eve performance: 'Extremely excruciating'

It might have looked like Miley Cyrus was having fun on Miley's New Year's Eve Party, the NBC special that rang in 2023, but she was suffering a "pretty traumatic experience." "I had a medical emergency," the singer said on the May 21 episode of The Zane Lowe Interview show on Apple Music. "I had an ovarian cyst rupture, which we didn't know exactly what was going on, so we did it, but it was pretty traumatic, cause it was extremely excruciating. And I did the show anyway, but it was really, really hard on me." Though we know now that she was in pain, she appeared to be in high spirits as she shared the stage with her godmother Dolly Parton, who was the night's cohost. The women performed together on several of their hits, including Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" and Parton's "Jolene" and "I Will Always Love You." Guests included Sia, David Byrne, and Paris Hilton, as well as Saturday Night Live stars of the day, such as Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, and Bowen Yang. Executive producers of the extravaganza included SNL creator Lorne Michaels. For a while afterward, Cyrus said she had even considered pulling the plug on the music career she began as a child. A conversation with Michaels is what changed her mind. "I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that now has stuck with me. He goes, 'Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild,'" Cyrus said. "And it was Christmas by then and that was New Year's, so I was expired on my amount of time that I was able to shut down. He's like, 'You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me that they were quitting music. Everyone does this. Everyone has these traumatic experiences.'" Cyrus didn't stop making music, of course. She's set to release her ninth studio album, titled Something Beautiful, alongside a film, on May 30. Watch the full conversation above.
