Adventure, Experience And Modern Design: The 2025 New York Auto Show
The Ineos Grenadier display at the New York Auto Show The automotive industry's infatuation with adventure shows no signs of ebbing. In fact, the sector shows all the signs of continued enthusiasm, as seen at the 2025 New York Auto Show which just wrapped up its 125th season at Manhattan's Javits Center. Vehicles built for adventure were seen at nearly every exhibit, with some brands adding a new spin to the pursuit. Subaru rolled out a new all-electric Trailseeker model, a rally-ready SUV designed to deliver off-road performance similar to the uber-popular Subaru Outback. Not to leave Outback standing in the dust, the company also showed off an updated Outback with more off-road and camping capability and a rugged new look to the Wilderness edition. Getting away from the city, and from the masses, is a true luxury experience and one that was seen across the New York Auto Show. As guests entered the show one of the first displays to explore was that of Ineos, a vintage-inspired modern brand designed to conquer trails, creeks and hills. The brand showed off its novel approach to creating a modern version of a vintage Land Rover Defender replete with switch panels for off-road performance and accessories and a rough-and-ready chassis design. While the English brand, powered by a BMW engine and ZF transmission, is an import and subject to tariffs, brand representatives were quick to add that the company is limiting markups in order to serve its dedicated customers. Another notable luxury off-road vehicle on display was the Genesis X Gran Equator, a concept seemingly inspired by Range Rover or the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, evoking the idea of off-grid driving and passenger pampering. While the X Gran Equator is just a concept, it delivers a message about what the company's designers are envisioning for the future and what we might see from Genesis in the near future. The Genesis X Gran Equator Concept Auto show stalwarts Camp Jeep and Ford Bronco Off-Roadeo continued to inspire show attendees to stand in line for a roller-coaster-like off-road thrill, then tour the brand exhibits to see the models on display. Visitors to the Ford exhibit could not only see the Broncos on display, but also all the accessories and special trims like the colorful Bronco Freewheeling edition. Jeep showed off the very first all electric Jeep Wagoneer S as well as popular Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models, all proven off-roaders. On the lower level of the convention center the show curated an Overlanding exhibit replete with modified Porsches, tricked-out campers and outfitted SUVs ideal for a week off the grid, climbing hills or traversing sand dunes. And just beyond was the EV test track where attendees could hop in for yet another thrill: A tight autocross course featuring the Dodge Charger Daytona, Cadillac Optiq, Mustang Mach- E and others, all showing off instant acceleration and precise braking around the course. The Maserati GT2 Stradale supercar Another trend on display at the 2025 New York Auto Show was racing. Genesis kicked off the show by announcing the Genesis Magma Racing team and showcasing its first Hypercar. The brand also announced its ultimate goal: to compete at Le Mans and confirmed that consumers will be able to buy Magma trims of the brand's popular luxury cars in the coming years. Maserati also showed off a new supercar, the GT2 Stradale, a 631 hp, $312,000 scissor-doored sports car. The newest race-inspired car in the Maserati family is designed to thrill and will likely become a collector's item; only 914 units will be built worldwide. Elsewhere, Ford continued to show off the GTD, Chevrolet displayed the Blazer EV SS and Toyota showcased the GR Supra MkV, all in addition to the collection seen in the Super Car hall featuring the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Lamborghini Revuelto, Lotus Eletre, Rimac Nevera and Bentley Continental GTC, among others. Volkswagen is displayed during the New York International Auto Show The 2025 New York Auto Show got its start with the announcement of the World Car Awards, this year's winners highlighting the continuing importance of electric cars. In fact, all six winners had electrified powertrains, though the World Performance Car, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS is powered by a hybrid. The World Car of the Year award went to the Kia EV3, a diminutive version of the Kia EV9; the World Luxury Car award was won by the Volvo EX90; the World Electric Vehicle award went to the Hyundai Inster; the World Urban Car award went to the BYD Seagull/Dolphin Mini and the World Car Design of the Year award went to the VW ID. Buzz. The 2026 Hyundai Palisade unveiling during the press preview of the New York International Auto Show ... More The Genesis X Gran Equator and the VW ID. Buzz both illustrate how automotive designers see our future in cars: Time well spent. The ID. Buzz, which has been on display for a few years but is just starting to show up in driveways and dealerships, offers a true luxury experience in terms of space and comforts. The Genesis Concept also showed attention to creature comforts such as glass roof panels, cashmere upholstery and lounge-like seating. These trends are seen in other brands at the show, too. Lucid showed off the Gravity SUV with its furniture-inspired interior that maximizes space even though it's not an overly large car. It was designed with a third row that stows in the rear floor and with an extra wide lift gate opening to accommodate as much gear as possible. Hyundai revealed the redesigned Palisade in a global debut, highlighting the brand's evolving design language that is technical and modern. The Palisade's linear front and rear tail lights offer a subdued look, a mood that continues on the interior with furniture-inspired lines and materials. With the addition of a hybrid trim and—of course—an XRT off-road trim, the Palisade also fits nicely into the hot customer demands seen throughout the New York Auto Show.

2026 Detroit Auto Show will kick off with iconic Route 66 cross-country drive
2026 Detroit Auto Show will kick off with iconic Route 66 cross-country drive Show Caption Hide Caption New York International Auto Show celebrates its 125th anniversary The New York International Auto Show is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. "The New York Auto Show really got things started for the auto industry back in 1900 at the old Madison Square Garden," said Show president Mark Schienberg. Up to nine vintage cars, primarily from the Big 3 automakers, will make the journey from Santa Monica to Chicago, then Detroit. The drive aims to honor Detroit's automotive heritage and its role in connecting America. A cross-country drive along Route 66, stretching from California to Illinois, will kick off the 2026 Detroit Auto Show. The event will involve car enthusiasts, historians and everyday people who want to experience 'The Drive Home' 100th anniversary celebration of the famous highway that American families have traveled for generations. Organizers are planning to leave Santa Monica on Jan. 3 , arriving in downtown Chicago on Jan. 11. From there, the group will drive over to the Motor City to open the 10-day auto show at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit. The event, coordinated by America's Automotive Trust based in Tacoma, Washington, and the National Route 66 Centennial Commission, is designed to celebrate Detroit and its role in connecting all parts of America. Up to nine vintage cars will make the drive. Afterward, they will be displayed at the Detroit Auto Show, which is scheduled for Jan. 14-25. 'We're going to focus on 1960s cars and vehicles that can make the long, tough journey in the winter so we don't have to worry about potential breakdowns,' David Madeira, CEO of America's Automotive Trust, told me. 'We're going to emphasize the Big Three. There will be Ford, Chevy and Chrysler.' Madeira, a Rhode Island native who developed strong ties with Detroiters two decades ago — including General Motors executive Bob Lutz and longtime Detroit Auto Show leader Rod Alberts — when he first reached out to create America's Car Museum in Tacoma, said spotlighting the city is a personal mission. 'It looks like we're going to include a '65 Ford Country Squire Station Wagon,' Madeira said. 'I want to remind people that this is the great family vacation. My dad had one and we drove around America and followed Route 66 in 1964, when I was 14.' Madeira approached Sam Klemet, who just took over as executive director of the Detroit Auto Show, with the idea. 'He got it instantly,' Madeira said. 'We're trying to preserve and honor the past and celebrate the present, to get people out driving their cars and enjoying life. We want to call attention to the importance of Detroit still.' In case you missed it: Why these three cars stole the attention at the 2025 New York International Auto Show There's no better way to spotlight Detroit's car culture than getting people behind the wheel with stops in towns all across America for two weeks, Klemet said. 'It's only fitting that 'The Drive Home' ends here, the auto capital of the world, where the automotive industry continues to push the boundaries of innovation.' In the past, Route 66 trips have begun in Tacoma, Boston, Orlando and Houston. But this big one will be spotlighting everything from passion to restoration. Folks usually join for parts of the journey, as events are promoted in advance. Details will be posted on America's Automotive Trust website, which is not yet active. Some people will fly out West for the kickoff, including Klemet, and others will make the whole journey. 'People think the Santa Monica Pier is the end point but it's really Mel's Diner' about a half-mile inland, Madeira said. 'In our very first year, we had a guy drive the whole way with us. But a lot of people will drive for an hour or a day. Anybody can come on the caravan. You get to hang out at all the stops and have fun.' While Route 66 will forever have a presence in pop culture, the highway was actually decommissioned in 1985, noted Matt Anderson, transportation curator at The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn. 'Still, it lingers in the popular imagination,' Anderson said, because of books and movies and songs and TV shows. 'It's a way to go back in time. Back in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, these were routes to get places. Now the highway is a destination in and of itself.' Nat King Cole recorded '(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66' in 1946, after John Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for his 1939 novel 'The Grapes of Wrath.' In the film based on the book, Henry Fonda played the patriarch of the Joad family, traveling from Oklahoma seeking a better life after their farm was seized by the bank. The TV show 'Route 66' (1960-64) spotlighted the adventures of two men in a Chevrolet Corvette convertible. 'Detroit was never on Route 66, because it ended in Chicago,' Anderson said. 'But the Route 66 celebration does speak to Detroit's role in popular culture and automotive culture. The connections between Detroit and Chicago are long-standing.' He added, 'It speaks to Route 66's role as 'America's Main Street' that Tacoma and Detroit are a part of this centennial celebration — even though neither was on the actual highway!' Sergio Rodriguez, 44, a U.S. Army veteran in Chesapeake, Virginia, who works as a military contractor, loves the idea of taking part in the cross-country celebration next year. If he can get the time off work, he's going. Rodriguez drove Route 66 from St. Louis to Barstow, California, in 2015 after finishing a project at Fort Leonard Wood. And again in 2024. 'I took seven days cruising Route 66. I would totally do that drive again,' he told me. 'The vibe is all about history. You get to see some pretty old buildings and scenes. It's pretty cool knowing that Route 66 is the road of all roads in the USA. It's where it all began.' During the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, Route 66 was the primary route for migrants heading west. Travel continued during World War II because California offered opportunities, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation historical page. Because of the efforts of the U.S. Highway 66 Association, Route 66 was the first highway to be completely paved in 1938. It became a safe route for moving military equipment, too. By the 1950s and 1960s, Route 66 became a major tourist destination. Small shops and restaurants popped up all along the road catering to adventurers. Steinbeck referred to Route 66 as 'the mother road.' Historic features along the route were restored after President Bill Clinton signed the National Route 66 Preservation Bill in 1999 that provided for $10 million in matching fund grants. In 2008, the World Monuments Fund listed Route 66 on its Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites. 'It spans the heart of America, symbolizing mobility, freedom and pursuit of the American Dream,' according to the National Park Service website. 'Route 66 is of national significance as a symbol of our transportation history and the impact of the automobile.' Major car brand pulls the plug on iconic sports car's comeback as it's not ‘viable in the market'
A total of 45,949 units were sold during its original 17-year run NO RETURN Major car brand pulls the plug on iconic sports car's comeback as it's not 'viable in the market' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RUMOURS of the iconic Audi R8's revival appear to have been quashed, with one of the company's key decision-makers claiming its return is not on the cards. Last month, it seemed the beloved supercar – which first debuted in 2006 but was discontinued just a year ago – was set to return as a supremely fast plug-in hybrid. However, speaking to the media at the New York Auto Show earlier this month, Kjell Gruner, the new CEO of Volkswagen Group America, reportedly said the R8's return would depend on 'what's viable in the market.' Outlets including Motor1 further reported that he went on to say: "A mid-engine, internal combustion engine vehicle, I don't see that on the road map." Rumours of its return originated from unnamed sources, who claimed it had the backing of Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. Intriguingly, many of the alleged details of the third-generation R8 had been meticulously planned, particularly its powertrain. Reports suggested it would combine Lamborghini's twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 – borrowed from its fellow VW Group brand – with electric motors to deliver hybrid performance. To that end, Autocar added that the return of the R8 would coincide with the launch of the Lamborghini Temerario, and that the top-of-the-range R8 Performance model would have been capable of producing close to 1,000 bhp. This seemed plausible, given that the first two generations of the R8 also shared much with their Lamborghini counterparts – first the Gallardo, and then the Huracan. The rumoured R8's focus on everyday usability also positioned it as a key rival to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GT and Porsche 911. For now, however, the return of the R8 remains just that – rumours – with the only silver lining being that Gruner's comments don't entirely rule out a new Audi flagship. The people's supercar is the bargain of the decade & still looks as gorgeous as ever Unfortunately, though, it seems unlikely that such a vehicle would be powered by a mid-mounted combustion engine. A total of 45,949 Audi R8s sold in its original 17-year run. It comes as Audi revealed last month it is set to axe the incredibly popular A1 and Q2 models next year - with an EV lined up as their replacement. Both cars, which are big sellers for the German brand - especially the A1 hatchback - are also the two cheapest among their range.
