Louisiana Board of Ethics decides on LPSS board member's request

LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) — Back in March, Lafayette Parish School Board Member Jeremy Hidalgo requested a formal opinion from the Louisiana Board of Ethics. This is regarding his position on the school board and his business partnerships with vendors. News 10 was present during the board's decision. The Louisiana Board of Ethics decided to prohibit LPSS Board Member, Jeremy Hidalgo, from soliciting and receiving sponsorships from vendors seeking to partner with his local business, if they work for or provide goods and services to LPSS. Hidalgo owns a local bar that hosts a customer appreciation night once a month where other businesses partner with him to provide free meals for attendees. In a letter to the board, Hidalgo indicates that the businesses he partners with gain exposure as sponsors because they volunteer to cook meals and provide a limited bar tab during the events. With a Louisiana law prohibiting public officials from accepting gifts, money, or anything of value directly or indirectly if the person is doing business with their agency, an advisory opinion was proposed to prohibit Hidalgo from receiving sponsorships from any vendor that has a relationship with LPSS. It was also recommended to adopt that proposal to which the board of ethics approved staff recommendations. News 10 contacted LPSS and Hidalgo for comment on the board's decision but has not heard back as of news time. As this story develops, updates will be posted here. Opelousas Museum launches Neighborhoods Project

OPELOUSAS, La. () — Historic preservation has always been a priority as Opelousas continues to evolve. Now, Patrice Melnick with the is continuing that mission with the Where We Live: Opelousas Neighborhoods Project. 'The main idea of the project is to highlight the neighborhoods, and they have names like the Brickyard and the Oil Mill and Garland, and they're commonly known, but they don't appear on maps. So, we want to raise the profiles of the neighborhoods especially the profiles of the people who lived there,' Melnick said in an interview with News 10. The way the museum plans to accomplish that goal is by having residents take pictures in their neighborhoods along with written stories about their memories. 'At the end of the project, which will be the end of the year, we're going to print some of those photographs and we're going to have an art show,' said Melnick. Close Thanks for signing up! 'Some of them may be wrong. So, we encourage people to we have a blank map with an invitation for people to come and draw in where their neighborhoods are. And even what's cool in each neighborhood.' With so much history in the city, Melnick says the people who live in it will tell the story of the city in the most genuine way possible. 'People are very proud of where they come from,' Melnick said. 'They're proud of their neighborhoods. It's a part of their identity. They have memories and a lot of associations, a lot of time that has to do with family and community. And so, it's exciting to hear those stories and to share them. And maybe it'll create a stronger sense of community between us.' For more on the Opelousas Neighborhoods Project, visit the link. Speaking of babies, Evans never had any of her own. Her students became her children. 'Sometimes I would say (to students) you know Ms. Evans. You know what my beliefs are. Sometimes, I would just say no and no. The students would laugh and say you know how Ms. Evans feels about it,' she added. Pearl has a message for her students and for those students who never entered her class but hold a place in her heart. 'Think about somebody who has inspired you. Think about Ms. Evans, who has had confidence in you and believed that you can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you. Don't fall through the cracks. Don't become a statistic,' Evans said. For Evans, that's 52 and a half years, over and done. 'I'm excited yet bitterly sad. I'm really sad because it wasn't time, but it was God's time. I'm appreciative of the time that I put into the system, but I know there are bigger and better things ahead,' Evans noted. Evans devoted her entire career to the , working at Northside High and .
