Panthers OLB Nic Scourton says his 'Purdue weight' is a myth
Panthers OLB Nic Scourton says his 'Purdue weight' is a myth Carolina Panthers outside linebacker Nic Scourton believes he's currently in the best shape of his entire football career. Scourton, the team's 2025 second-round selection, spoke with reporters following the final practice of rookie minicamp on Saturday. Beat reporter Sheena Quick would ask the 20-year-old about the chatter around getting back to his "Purdue weight" in the lead-up to the draft. But Scourton says that label actually isn't a thing, at least in his view. "I don't know what this narrative is about me being 'Purdue weight," he replied with a laugh. "But I think Panthers fans should be excited for me because I'm the most fit I've ever been, I'm healthy, I'm strong and I'm excited to get to work." After playing the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Purdue University, Scourton transferred to Texas A&M for the 2024 campaign—where he appeared noticeably larger. The Aggies, in fact, listed Scourton as heavy as 285 pounds this past year. Then, when it came time to measure up at the 2025 scouting combine, Scourton hit the scale at 257 pounds. The number from Purdue that may matter most for Scourton, however, is 10.0—the total of sacks he amassed in 2023. That Big Ten-leading tally—due to a change in defensive scheme, according to Scourton—dipped to 5.0 in 2024. So as long as he's racking up the takedowns, the weight, whether it be "Purdue weight," "Texas A&M weight," or "Panthers weight," should be just fine. Panthers release veteran edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, rule out Jonathan Brooks for the season
The Carolina Panthers released veteran Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday after selecting two edge rushers in the NFL draft. Clowney, the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft, had 5 1/2 sacks last season for the Panthers. Advertisement He had one year left on his two-year, $20 million contract. Carolina also signed free agent Patrick Jones II in free agency. Carolina's other edge rushers include D.J. Wonnum, DJ Johnson, Amare Barno, Kenny Dyson, Thomas Incoom and 2021 second-round pick Boogie Basham. The Panthers also placed running Jonathon Brooks, the team's second-round pick in 2024, on the physically unable to perform list — meaning he will not play in 2025. Brooks re-tore the ACL in his knee as a rookie in Week 14 after suffering a similar injury to the same knee during his final season at the University of Texas. Advertisement The Panthers had prepared for just such a scenario with Brooks, adding depth to the running back room this offseason by signing free agent Rico Dowdle from the Dallas Cowboys and drafting Trevor Etienne from Georgia in the fourth round. Carolina also waived tight end convert Colin Granger, a former college basketball player, as part of an injury settlement. The team also released tight end Jordan Matthews and receiver Dax Milne, and waived receiver T.J. Luther, offensive lineman Andrew Raym and defensive tackle Jerrod Clark. Panthers had 1st-round grade on 2nd-round pick Nic Scourton
Panthers had 1st-round grade on 2nd-round pick Nic Scourton The Carolina Panthers hunted down quite a bargain for themselves on the second day of the 2025 NFL draft. President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan joined Wednesday's episode of The Pat McAfee Show, where he talked about this year's exciting selection process. He revealed that he and his front office actually had a first-round grade on their second-round pick, Texas A&M pass rusher Nic Scourton. "You really have to look at the body of work," Morgan said of Scourton. "Yeah, the production maybe dipped a little bit, but he was still super disruptive out there. He plays with a lot of energy and toughness, enthusiasm. You can just tell that he's passionate about the game. "So, I don't know really play too much into the dip in production. He was still productive in terms of tackles for loss and things like that. He's a guy we obviously felt really good about. We actually had a first-round grade on him. We had him in the late-first round." Scourton, after a Big Ten-leading 10.0 sacks for Purdue in 2023, came into 2024 as one of the top prospects in college football. But that perception, like his production, took a hit—as he registered 5.0 sacks this past season for the Aggies. As Morgan noted, however, the other numbers were there for the 6-foot-3, 257-pounder. Scourton, who still wound up as a first-team All-SEC selection last year, recorded 14 tackles for loss (one off of his 15 in 2023) along with a forced fumble and a pair of passes defensed. The Panthers traded up from the 57th overall selection in a deal with the Denver Broncos to nab Scourton at No. 51. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
