Rockies add OF Sam Hilliard, INF Thairo Estrada to roster

May 30 - The Colorado Rockies purchased the contract of veteran outfielder Sam Hilliard from Triple-A Albuquerque and reinstated infielder Thairo Estrada from the 60-day injured list on Friday. In corresponding moves, outfielder Nick Martini was designated for assignment and infielder Adael Amador was optioned to Triple-A. Hilliard, 31, is set to appear in the major leagues for the first time this season. He batted .239 with 10 home runs for Colorado last season and is a career .219 hitter with 42 home runs and 104 RBIs in 312 games over six seasons with the Rockies and Atlanta Braves (2023). Estrada, 29, fractured his right wrist during spring training. He is a career .251 hitter with 48 home runs and 195 RBIs in 469 games over six seasons with the New York Yankees (2019-20) and San Francisco Giants (2021-24). Martini, 34, was batting .225 with one home run and four RBIs in 43 games during his first season in Colorado. Amador, 22, was batting .146 with one home run and five RBIs in 33 games with the Rockies. --Field Level Media

Rockies select contract of Nick Martini, option Zac Veen to Triple-A

Photo by Caitlin O'Hara/MLB Photos via Getty Images This morning, the Colorado Rockies announced the following roster moves: Colorado Rockies Announce Roster Moves (23 March 2025) The decision to sign Nick Martini is not surprising based on his spring training performance and the Rockies preference for veteran players. In 45 plate appearances, he has 14 hits, including two home runs. Although he suffered a minor injury last week that resulted in some arm soreness, it is not expected to affect his play. Advertisement The decision to start Zac Veen (No. 4 PuRP) in Triple-A Albuquerque is puzzling, given his spring training performance. In 57 at-bats, Veen has 17 hits, including two home runs and nine stolen bases. That number ties him with David Hamilton (Red Sox) for the most stolen bases in spring training. Sending Diego Castillo (4.50 ERA), Aaron Schunk, and Aaron Nola to Albuquerque was unsurprising given that these players have not made notable spring training showings and may provide depth later in the season. In making these moves, the Rockies have also ruled out using Owen Miller to help address the hole in the lineup created by Thairo Estrada's broken right wrist. In light of yesterday's trade that sent Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians for INF/UTIL Tyler Freeman, there was speculation that perhaps the time had arrived for Veen to make his MLB debut, but this morning, the Rockies indicated they believe he would benefit from additional time in Triple-A. Advertisement It appears, then, the Rockies will go with an outfield lineup of Jordan Beck, Brenton Doyle, and Sean Bouchard with Nick Martini and Sam Hilliard providing backup while Freeman and Kyle Farmer split second base/utility duties. This story will be updated as additional details become available. ★ ★ ★ Please keep in mind our Purple Row Community Guidelines when you're commenting. Thanks! More from
