This morning, the Colorado Rockies announced the following roster moves:
Colorado Rockies Announce Roster Moves (23 March 2025)
The decision to sign Nick Martini is not surprising based on his spring training performance and the Rockies preference for veteran players. In 45 plate appearances, he has 14 hits, including two home runs. Although he suffered a minor injury last week that resulted in some arm soreness, it is not expected to affect his play.

The decision to start Zac Veen (No. 4 PuRP) in Triple-A Albuquerque is puzzling, given his spring training performance. In 57 at-bats, Veen has 17 hits, including two home runs and nine stolen bases. That number ties him with David Hamilton (Red Sox) for the most stolen bases in spring training.
Sending Diego Castillo (4.50 ERA), Aaron Schunk, and Aaron Nola to Albuquerque was unsurprising given that these players have not made notable spring training showings and may provide depth later in the season.
In making these moves, the Rockies have also ruled out using Owen Miller to help address the hole in the lineup created by Thairo Estrada's broken right wrist.
In light of yesterday's trade that sent Nolan Jones to the Cleveland Guardians for INF/UTIL Tyler Freeman, there was speculation that perhaps the time had arrived for Veen to make his MLB debut, but this morning, the Rockies indicated they believe he would benefit from additional time in Triple-A.

It appears, then, the Rockies will go with an outfield lineup of Jordan Beck, Brenton Doyle, and Sean Bouchard with Nick Martini and Sam Hilliard providing backup while Freeman and Kyle Farmer split second base/utility duties.
This story will be updated as additional details become available.

Guardians ranked among MLB's top farm systems, per MLB.com

Guardians ranked among MLB's top farm systems, per originally appeared on The Sporting News The Cleveland Guardians are spectating from the outside of the AL Wild Card as the MLB season comes down to its final two months of the regular season. Although the team has found some momentum, having an 8-3 record in August, the Guardians are still one game behind the New York Yankees for the last AL Wild Card spot. With franchise players like Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan leading the way for the Guardians in 2025, there's a lot of potential in Cleveland's future. With releasing its midseason rankings for MLB farm systems, Cleveland came in at No. 5. The Guardians are well-known for developing pitchers through their farm system. Players like former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, as well as current pitchers in their rotation, such as Gavin Williams, Logan Allen, and Tanner Bibee, are all players that the team drafted and developed into successful pitchers in the league. However, things look a little bit different this season. The Guardians' top prospects are filled with positional players. Cleveland has five Top 100 prospects that are poised to emerge as potential stars in the big leagues: second baseman Travis Bazzana (No.15), outfielder Chase DeLauter (No. 56), shortstop Angel Genao (No. 57), and first baseman/outfielder C.J. Kayfus (No. 59). Each offers major upside for the organization's future. C.J. Kayfus has already shown how impactful these young, up-and-coming players can be in the league after making his MLB debut on Aug. 2. In 10 appearances this month, the 23-year-old has a .258 batting average, .303 on-base percentage, .452 slugging percentage, and a .755 OPS while hitting one home run and five RBI. As time goes on, expect each of these developing stars to find a spot on this Guardians roster. Whether it's this season or in the future.

2025 MLB Odds: Fade The Dodgers, Back Padres To Win NL West

Major League Baseball 2025 MLB Odds: Fade The Dodgers, Back Padres To Win NL West Published Aug. 14, 2025 2:11 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Now is a great time to stop and appreciate how incredible these MLB division races have been. There is an old truism about how, historically, despite the length of the baseball season, about 75% of the teams who are in first place on Memorial Day end up maintaining their lead and going on to win their division. The point being, even though the season is six months long, the standings after two months are usually a very strong indicator of who is headed for October. This season is very different, though. All six divisions have seen some of the more extreme shakeups in the standings in recent memory and all within a fairly short period of time. Around Memorial Day, the AL East looked like a runaway, with the Yankees enjoying a comfortable seven-game cushion. Now that we're in mid-August, the Yankees sit in third place, six games behind the surprising first-place Blue Jays. On July 6, the Tigers led the AL Central by a staggering 13.5 games over the Twins, with the Guardians in fourth place and 15.5 games out. The Guardians have surged their way to second place, getting as close as four games behind the slumping Tigers in the loss column. Cleveland now trails Detroit by 6.5 games. The AL West looked like it was once again going to belong to the Astros, who led by seven games in mid-June. But as play started on Aug. 13, the Astros and Mariners were tied. ADVERTISEMENT The Milwaukee Brewers are on a 12-game winning streak as of Aug. 14. The National League has been just as wild. In the middle of June, the Mets led the NL East by 5.5 games, a lead that has turned into a five-game deficit to the Phillies in less than two months. A look at the standings in mid-June also reflected an NL Central that had the Cubs comfortably ahead of the Brewers, leading by 6.5 games. The Brewers, who seem to win every baseball game they play these days, have turned the tables and now enjoy a 7.5-game lead. That's a stunning 14-game swing. At least in the NL West, we can count on some stability, where the juggernaut Dodgers are a lock to win the division — right? Well, those Dodgers led by nine games on July 4 and now trail the new-look Padres by a full game. That's a 10-game swing in about five weeks. All six divisions have seen comfortable leads disappearing throughout the summer. But the NL West is the division, from a betting perspective, that I want to focus on, as these teams square off this weekend for a huge series in Los Angeles. Padres Best Bet to Win NL West When you look at the odds to win the division, the wrong team is favored. The Dodgers — despite trailing by a game and being ice-cold coming off of a second series sweep at the hands of the Angels — are -180 favorites at FanDuel Sportsbook. The Padres at +135 are underdogs. The bet here is the Padres to win the NL West. Can the Padres keep their slim lead over L.A. to finish the season? The Dodgers were projected by oddsmakers to win around 105 games before the season started and looked to be capable of living up to those expectations with their sizzling start. But L.A., surprisingly quiet at the trade deadline, has been a mediocre team for a long stretch. You can blame it on injuries, malaise after winning another World Series or whatever other reasons for the underachieving and underwhelming results. But the fact is, the Padres are simply a better baseball team right now. Two weeks ago, the day after the trade deadline, I wrote about the Padres' acquisitions and recommended them at 11-1 to win the National League. That number has been slashed to 5-1, as the Padres have gone 9-3 since the deadline and possess one of the best bullpens in recent memory now that All-Star Mason Miller has been added. New acquisitions Ryan O'Hearn and Ramon Laureano have provided depth to what was a struggling lineup, and the Padres look poised to break through and make their first World Series since 1998. The Dodgers are 12-21 since July 4 and are only favored to win the West because of past success. The L.A. team we expected isn't the one we're seeing right now. Taking the plus money odds on the hotter, more complete Padres to capture the division title is the bet to make. Phillies — And Their Fans — Still Waiting For Andrew Painter

It was supposed to be the year of Andrew Painter — the year the Phillies' pitching prodigy would arrive in Philadelphia with a wicked arsenal that includes a 100-mph fastball. Ain't happened yet. The 'July-ish' target for Painter's major league debut has vaporized, and it's looking more and more likely that Philly won't see Painter at all in 2025. The 22-year-old right-hander has struggled since getting promoted to triple-A Lehigh Valley in early May. His 5.24 ERA is the clearest proof of those struggles. He's also given up too much loud contact with opposing hitters slugging .493 against him, including 14 home runs. But the most worrisome part to Painter's season is this: He's getting worse, not better, with an astronomical 12.96 ERA over two starts in August. 'Command again,' Phillies manager Rob Thomson said via The Inquirer of a recent Painter start. 'You know, I watched every pitch, and the stuff's there, and I thought actually (Sunday's) command was better than the time before. He just got hit a little bit more, that's all. But the stuff is definitely there.' Here's a look at said stuff that still excites Thomson: It can take some time for pitchers to regain their command following Tommy John surgery, which Painter underwent in July 2023 to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Thomson said Painter's 'velocity was there from the get-go' but said he could be battling 'some fatigue' because of increased workload, which is up to 87⅔ innings this year. Painter missed the 2024 regular season and then threw only 15⅔ in the Arizona Fall League. He missed all of 2023 after tossing 103⅔ inning in 2022, when he dominated three minor-league levels and became the Phillies most buzzy prospect since Cole Hamels two decades earlier. The clearest indication that the Phillies still envision Painter as a true ace — the rarest commodity in baseball — is that they refused to include him in a deal that would have scored them stud closer Mason Miller at this year's trade deadline, as reported by Ken Rosenthal. "I think (Painter) is a premier starting pitcher... is what he projects to be," Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said. "Again, he's coming off of basically missing two years. Tommy John surgery, a lot of times after you throw like he has, it even takes another year to get back to where you were." And, although it looks like a long shot that Painter will pitch in Philly this season, it's still not an impossibility. 'I wouldn't close the door on it, because anything can happen,' Thomson said. 'I mean, all of a sudden he catches his second wind, we have some injuries here, and then, you know? I wouldn't close the door on it.'
