IKBN Jitra student mourns the sudden loss of three close buddies
ALOR STAR: It was supposed to be a joyful weekend for the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) students in Jitra as they returned to their respective hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha.
However, Nik Muhammad Hanif Darwis Abdul Qayyum, 19, is mourning a tragic loss of his three close buddies after they were killed in a road crash at Km49.4 of the North-South Expressway near Alor Star, this afternoon.
"We finished class early today, at around 12.30pm, and returned to our dormitories to pack our bags before heading home for the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays this Saturday.
"Around 1.30pm, the three of them told me that they were heading home.
"I had dozed off, but around 2.30pm I received the news that they had been involved in a crash," he said when met at the Forensics Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here today.
His three friends, Muhamad Habil Mohd Sobri, Mohammad Fahmi Mohd Jamil and Muhamad Arif Aifan Derani – all aged 19, had perished in the 2.30pm fateful incident.
All of them were close friends and currently in their second semester of the Advanced Certificate in Mechanical Technology (Welding).
Hanif said he had shared a dorm room with Arif and Fahmi, while Habil stayed in a room on the upper floor, but often came by to study together with them.
He said the night before was the last time they had all slept in the same room, and none of them showed any unusual behaviour.
"I feel a deep sense of loss and sorrow because they were more than just classmates. We always joked around together in the dorm," he said.
