IKBN Jitra student mourns the sudden loss of three close buddies

ALOR STAR: It was supposed to be a joyful weekend for the National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) students in Jitra as they returned to their respective hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha.
However, Nik Muhammad Hanif Darwis Abdul Qayyum, 19, is mourning a tragic loss of his three close buddies after they were killed in a road crash at Km49.4 of the North-South Expressway near Alor Star, this afternoon.
"We finished class early today, at around 12.30pm, and returned to our dormitories to pack our bags before heading home for the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays this Saturday.
"Around 1.30pm, the three of them told me that they were heading home.
"I had dozed off, but around 2.30pm I received the news that they had been involved in a crash," he said when met at the Forensics Department of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here today.
His three friends, Muhamad Habil Mohd Sobri, Mohammad Fahmi Mohd Jamil and Muhamad Arif Aifan Derani – all aged 19, had perished in the 2.30pm fateful incident.
All of them were close friends and currently in their second semester of the Advanced Certificate in Mechanical Technology (Welding).
Hanif said he had shared a dorm room with Arif and Fahmi, while Habil stayed in a room on the upper floor, but often came by to study together with them.
He said the night before was the last time they had all slept in the same room, and none of them showed any unusual behaviour.
"I feel a deep sense of loss and sorrow because they were more than just classmates. We always joked around together in the dorm," he said.

No bull: Trader loses RM100,000 to fake ‘Datuk' promising lucrative cattle rearing investment

JOHOR BARU: A honey product trader lost more than RM100,000 after being lured into investing in a cattle-rearing project in Thailand by a businessman with a 'Datuk' title. Mazli Hamzah, 37, said he first met the businessman in 2024 and exchanged contact numbers with him for business networking purposes. 'In March this year, he called me saying he wanted to meet as he was interested in helping grow my business, including marketing my product overseas. 'We met frequently after that, but in July, he told me about a business opportunity involving investment in a cattle-rearing farm in Thailand, where the cows were meant for Hari Raya Aidiladha,' he said during a press conference at a shopping mall here on Monday (July 28). Mazli added that he was initially sceptical about the offer, but the man, who is in his 40s, later brought him to meet a Tabung Haji officer at Menara Tabung Haji in the city centre. He claimed that both men mostly discussed the cattle-rearing project, which convinced him that it was a legitimate business opportunity. 'Earlier this month, I handed the businessman more than RM100,000. Soon after that, he kept asking me for more money, which made me suspect that he just wanted my money. 'Everything was done verbally, with no black-and-white agreement between us. However, he did provide me with a receipt after I gave him the money to invest,' he said. Mazli added that he continued calling the businessman for updates on the investment, but his calls and WhatsApp messages went unanswered. 'I then went to his restaurant in Bandar Dato Onn and saw him sitting a few tables away. I called his mobile phone, which he glanced at but ignored. 'When I approached him, he saw me and immediately left the restaurant,' he said, adding that he has since lodged a police report. It is learnt that the businessman was fined RM200,000 by the Sessions Court here last year for using a fake 'Datuk' title from Pahang. He had admitted to fraudulently using a letter of endorsement for recipients of a degree, medal or award from Pahang Darul Makmur, believed to be a fake document. The businessman also pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of displaying the Darjah Indera Mahkota Negeri Pahang emblem on his vehicle at the same time and place, which was also believed to be fake. When contacted, Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat confirmed that a police report had been lodged and said investigations were ongoing. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Undercover cops lead to 30 arrests of illegal border crossers

KOTA BHARU: Disguising themselves as villagers by wearing batik and sarong is one of the tactics used by police officers in Kelantan to arrest individuals who illegally enter the Malaysia-Thailand border in the state. The unexpected measure proved effective when 37 individuals were arrested in 30 cases since the recent Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said disguising as villagers allowed police to move unnoticed among suspects who entered through the rat trails. 'If we were in uniform, the illegal immigrants would run away on seeing us. So we change our approach by putting on mufti. The aim is to arrest immediately, not just prevent. 'The 136-kilometre (km) border is too wide to be monitored with the existing strength of personnel, especially when the area controlled by the PGA is only around 50 km,' he said. He said this at a press conference after the Kelantan PDRM Monthly Assembly for June at the Kelantan police contingent headquarters here, today. Mohd Yusoff also stressed that there was no issue of corruption in the operation and his members were now instructed to go undercover and arrest immediately, especially in 'hotspot' areas that have been identified as locations where people often enter and leave without permission. Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff also denied the viral claim about packet cooking oil from Malaysia which was allegedly sold openly in the south Thailand. He said investigations found the allegations were untrue and that they were old news that had been re-circulated.
