Local businesses reflect on power outage in Broussard
BROUSSARD, La. () — Thursday morning power outage impacting over 2,000 Entergy customers came as a surprise. 'I was in the meat market. We had a line of customers and next thing you know, everything is black,' said Bryce Johnson, manager of Billeaud's Meat & Grocery. Griffin Billeaud, also a manager of Billeaud's Meat & Grocery said he was on the computer, in his office when everything went dark and took quick action to turn the generator on. 'We were at our other store in Lafayette, all the managers. I was getting ready to come over here to get my stuff together and she called. She's like, the power is out. A spokesperson with Entergry mentioned a tree fell on the transmission line and crews worked to repair and restore the power quickly. Johnson explained how Downtown Broussard gets busy during lunch time and it was hectic but their generator helped. Burton with BJ's said everything ran on energy as they fry food, have plate lunches and steam tables. With the workers dedication to serving the community and pushing through the challenge of working with a generator she said customers felt it was impressive. 'It was hard and it was a lot but the fact that we were able to keep pushing through and serving the community here, which is all we really want to do. I think that made everybody here feel pretty good,' she said. More heavy rain, rumbles for southern & central Utah Thursday evening
SALT LAKE CITY () — Happy Thursday, Utah! Active weather conditions continue for areas of south & central Utah on Thursday, with scattered showers and storms developing. Northern areas will see a few more clouds, with a spotty downpour chance. The flood threat returns for areas south of I-70, especially near the dry washes and slot canyons. Highs will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s for the Wasatch Front, with highs in the 80s for SW Utah. The pattern will be repeated for Friday. Look for partly cloudy skies with afternoon scattered showers and storms developing. The best chance will be for areas along and south of I-80. Highs will be in the mid-80s for the Wasatch Front and lower 90s for SW Utah. A big ridge of high pressure will begin to build back across Utah later this week. This will usher in drier air and much warmer weather once again across the Beehive State just in time for the upcoming weekend. Saturday will feature mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 80s for the Wasatch Front and upper 90s for SW Utah. Look for highs to approach the triple digits for southern Utah on Sunday afternoon. Highs will be in the low to mid-90s for the Wasatch Front. WASHINGTON TERRACE, Utah (ABC4) — Police are asking the public to help them identify a group of vandals who caused thousands of dollars in damage to the new Roosevelt Elementary School, which is still under construction. According to the Weber County Sheriff's Office, a group of people broke into the new Roosevelt Elementary School early in the morning of Thursday, June 5. The suspects vandalized the building and caused thousands of dollars in damage, police said. Weber School District is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the people involved in the vandalism. Do you recognize these people? Former Ascension Public Schools employee arrested for felony theft
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A woman formerly employed with the Ascension Parish Public School System has been arrested after she was accused of stealing over $12,000. The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office (APSO) says Kayla Jones, 33, is charged with felony theft of $5,000 but less than $25,000. According to the sheriff's office, detectives started an investigation after being contacted by officials with Ascension Public Schools on Wednesday, April 30. Jones, a former employee, was reported to have taken approximately $12,624.92 during her time of employment. An internal audit and follow-up investigation showed that the funds were taken in separate amounts over a period of time. A warrant was issued for Jones, who later turned herself in. She was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. The investigation is ongoing. Ascension Public Schools released the following statement: 'We have zero tolerance for any form of misconduct or financial mismanagement within our school system. Upon discovering indications of potential theft of funds at Central Middle School, we acted immediately by initiating a thorough investigation in partnership with an independent auditor and notifying law enforcement and the legislative auditor's office,' said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent Edith M. Walker. 'We are grateful for our partnership with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office for pursuing this case and protecting our school district. BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana residents should be aware of another text message scam circulating that has the potential to steal personal information and charge unnecessary fees. Louisiana State Police (LSP) and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) say in the latest scam attempt, residents have received text messages claiming the recipient has an 'outstanding traffic ticket' and must pay a fee or face penalties. The OMV recommends that customers ignore and delete the text messages. Here are tips to help avoid scams: DO NOT click on links in an unsolicited message from an unverified source DO NOT respond or send your personal information via text Delete all suspicious texts and emails and report them to Exercise caution with all communications you receive from anonymous sources Confirm the message was generated from a legitimate source Keep an eye out for signs of scams (rewards, vague URLs, incorrect grammar) The Louisiana OMV does not send text messages or emails threatening prosecution for traffic or fee violations.
