Still climbing Tiger Hill: Raikot family's 26-year journey for road nameplate to commemorate sacrifice of Ludhiana district's Naik Nirmal Singh in Kargil War.

Johlan (Raikot): Each Kargil Vijay Diwas in July for 26 years, one family in Punjab has marked the sacrifice of their son with quiet prayers, a community meal, and a fading hope that a road might one day carry the name of a lion who never came home from Tiger Hill. On July 6, 1999, Naik Nirmal Singh, a soldier with the 8 Sikh regiment, was killed in action while leading an assault to retake Tiger Hill, one of the most strategic peaks during the war with Pakistan. Since then, his family has observed a three-day memorial in their village of Johlan, held annually from July 7 to 9. The ceremony includes prayers (Akhand Paath), tributes by retired servicemen, and a community kitchen (langar) for villagers and visiting comrades. Soldier's father, 76-year-old Atbar Singh, said the tradition had continued unbroken for more than two decades, with many of his son's fellow soldiers — now retired — returning each year to pay their respects. "We honour his memory not just with rituals, but by bringing people together," said Atbar. "His regiment, his village — they haven't forgotten." Comrades recall the last assault Among those who travelled to Johlan this year were 12-odd former colleagues from the 8 Sikh unit. Captain Ranjit Singh Diwani, now retd, who served alongside Nirmal, said the regiment had lost 35 personnel in the war — including one officer, four JCOs, and 30 jawans — but Nirmal Singh's bravery remained singular. "He served for 13 years and gave everything in that final assault," said Diwani. "The 8 Sikh and the entire army are proud of him. " Captain Sukhdeep Singh (retd), another comrade from nearby Rattowal village, recalled Nirmal Singh's final words as they prepared to scale Tiger Hill: "If we die today, the govt will name roads after us." "He said it half-jokingly," said Capt Sukhdeep. "But here we are, 26 years later, still writing letters to get a road named in his honour." Voices from the village Though Johlan village has built a memorial to honour Nirmal Singh and two other local martyrs, residents say more could be done. Chamkaur Singh, a 70-year-old Numberdar, said the 7-km Raikot-Johlan road should bear the martyr's name. "We also want basic issues like waterlogging fixed," he added, crediting village Sarpanch Kuldeep Singh Kaddu for his continued efforts. Atma Singh, 55, Nirmal Singh's cousin and former classmate, recalled cycling with him to Lohat Baddi village to attend school. "Even back then, he would talk about joining the Army," said Atma. The govt high school in the village now bears Nirmal Singh's name. But villagers and retired soldiers still await official recognition beyond plaques — one they believe is due. "The promise wasn't just about a road," said Capt Sukhdeep. "It was about remembrance. And remembrance, like sacrifice, shouldn't have an expiry date." MSID:: 122344276 413 |

1 vehicle stolen daily; recovery is only 26.6% in Panchkula

1 2 Panchkula: Approximately one motor vehicle is stolen daily on an average in Panchkula. What is worse is that of the total stolen vehicles, only about 26.64% of them were recovered, according to the vehicle lifting and recovery data of the last five years. According to the latest data provided by Panchkula Police, a total of 1,520 vehicle thefts were reported from 2021 through April 2025 (0.96 vehicles per day), with 405 vehicles recovered, yielding an overall recovery rate of 26.64%. In 2021, 266 vehicles were reported stolen. This number surged to 409 in 2022 — the highest in the five-year period. Although thefts slightly dropped to 357 in 2023 and 346 in 2024, the first four months of 2025 have already recorded 142 cases, putting the year on track to exceed 420 thefts if the trend continues — a potential five-year high. Year-by-year analysis reveals a decline in recovery efficiency in recent years. While the local police managed to recover 30.45% of stolen vehicles in 2021, and slightly more in 2022 (30.56%), the following years show a steady decline. The recovery rate dropped to 26.34% in 2023, then sharply down to 20.52% in 2024. Early 2025 figures show a slight improvement at 23.94%, but still far below the early years. The data points to a need for enhanced vehicle tracking, faster response protocols, and public awareness campaigns to improve recovery outcomes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If You Haven't Switched Car Insurance in 2024, You're Losing Money AutoTrends Learn More Undo Nirmal Singh, inspector crime branch, Panchkula Police, told TOI that earlier, gangs used to operate, so at one point of arrest, even 40 to 50 vehicles used to get recovered. Now, vehicle lifting has shifted to individuals, who are mostly doing it for drugs, making the recovery of vehicles difficult. Even if a thief is caught, two to three bikes get recovered. Mostly, such thieves take out the body parts and sell them to scrap dealers. The police last week directed all scrap dealers not to buy stolen items, else action will be taken against them. The police have also appealed to people to check all documents while buying a second-hand vehicle to ensure it is not a stolen one. The police said mostly two-wheelers, particularly Activas, are stolen in Panchkula. Most such thefts take place at Yavnika Garden, Sector 5. It has three gates and three open parking lots, making it an easy spot for vehicle lifters. The civil hospital area is another vulnerable area. Many people who park outside the hospital are at more risk. Other open unmanned parking lots are also easy targets for vehicle lifters. The hot spots for vehicle lifting are Yavnika Garden, Sector 5, civil hospital, Sector 6, and other open unmanned parking lots | Year | Thefts | Recoveries | I 2025 (up to Apr 30) | 142 | 34 | | 2024 | 346 | 71 | | 2023 | 357 | 94 | | 2022 | 409 | 125 | | 2021 | 266 | 81 | Total: 1520; 405

Saunkan Saunkanay 2 movie review: Ammy Virk faces triple trouble in this laugh-out-loud film

Saunkan Saunkanay 2 movie review: Punjabi cinema and comedy are a match made in blockbuster heaven and Ammy Virk's latest film, Saunkan Saunkanay 2, directed by Smeep Kang seems to be headed that way. The blockbuster success of Saunkan Saunkne (2022) precipitated this sequel, featuring the returning star cast of Nimrat Khaira, Sargun Mehta (in a double role) and Nirmal Rishi. Written by Amberdeep Singh, the film features the marital life of Nirmal Singh (Ammy Virk), which is complicated even further, as completely fed up with his existing two wives, he starts thinking of the possibility of a third! Saunkan Saunkanay 2 begins with a quick recap of events that unfolded in the previous film. Narrated by Nirmal Singh, as the hapless husband caught between two overbearing wives, the poor man tells of his plight as one driven to the brink of madness. Although both wives, Naseeb Kaur (Sargun Mehta) and Kiranjit Kaur (Nimrat Khaira) are sisters, they are at each other's throats all the time. They even drive their mother-in-law (Nirmal Rishi) up the wall, who is the mastermind behind getting a third wife for her son, in the hopes that he will finally find happiness. As she says, 'What's in a number?' But when Nirmal finds an Italian woman, Monica Belluci (Sargun Mehta in a double role) and brings her home, the two wives join forces to solve the 'international crisis'! The two try to lure their husband back and create hilarious situations to be nice to their husband for a change but all attempts sadly fall flat as Nirmal Singh will have none of it. Meanwhile, the entire village is comically wrapped up in this spectacle, especially as there is immense curiosity about the white woman in their midst. The comedy is pegged on several stereotypes, many of which are offensive and tone deaf but are employed within the realm of humour, all for the sake of a good laugh. The henfights between women, the obsession with land, the connivance between a mother who cannot see beyond her son's happiness, the desirability of thin women, devious women trying to take the impressionable husband for a merry ride, and so many more. These do become a bit tedious after a while, along with the high-pitch at which the comedy unfolds throughout. In Saunkan Saunkanay 2, women bicker, fight, curse, kick up a storm, manipulate, deceive but they just refuse to go down quietly. In fact, one of the most hilarious scenes is the one where Nirmal's mother narrates her falling in love with Nirmal's father and following her own heart, even unwittingly being the one responsible for the father's subsequent, untimely death. With crackling dialogues that mostly keep the momentum of the film chugging away at a good pace, the film starts dragging its feet in the second half and moves towards a predictable resolution. It also ends on a baffling note, perhaps in a hastily put together attempt to keep avenues open for another sequel. Ammy Virk, Sargun Mehta and Nimrat Khaira deliver noteworthy performances, while Khaira's dialogue delivery and comic timing is absolutely spot-on and deserve special mention. It's also nice to see the first ladies of Punjabi cinema— Gurpreet Bhangu, Seema Kaushal, Rupinder Rupi, being featured in a foot-tapping number, 'Gore Gore Mem'. The music compliments the entertainer with the songs 'Dieting', 'Mia Bella' and 'Main Nachdi'. This feel-good, crowd-pleaser is bound to become another box-office hit. Ludhiana: Flour mill owner opens fire at neighbour, held

The incident took place on Friday night, leaving the locality in shock. The whole incident was captured in the CCTVs installed in the street. The accused, Jagdeep Singh alias Deep, 42, fled the scene after opening fire on Nirmal Singh, 40, who suffered bullet injuries to his arm and chest. Nirmal Singh managed to rush himself to a hospital where he is now reported to be in a stable condition. According to deputy superintendent of police (DSP, Dakha) Varinder Singh Khosa, the altercation began earlier in the day when Nirmal Singh took wheat to Jagdeep's mill for grinding. Dissatisfied with the quality of flour he received, he raised a complaint, leading to a verbal spat between the two. The situation escalated later that evening. Complainant Kuldeep Kaur, aunt of the victim, told the police that Jagdeep turned up at their house and called for Nirmal to step outside. The moment Nirmal exited, the accused allegedly pulled out a revolver and shot him from close range before fleeing the spot. Upon receiving the information, the Mullanpur Dakha police immediately launched an investigation. The accused was arrested later that night and police recovered a .32-bore licensed revolver, three empty bullet shells, and a scooter used in the crime. DSP Khosa confirmed that an FIR has been registered under Section 109 (Attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 27 of the Arms Act. The revolver used in the shooting was a licensed weapon, which the accused misused in the assault.
