Panchkula: Approximately one motor vehicle is stolen daily on an average in Panchkula. What is worse is that of the total stolen vehicles, only about 26.64% of them were recovered, according to the vehicle lifting and recovery data of the last five years.
According to the latest data provided by Panchkula Police, a total of 1,520 vehicle thefts were reported from 2021 through April 2025 (0.96 vehicles per day), with 405 vehicles recovered, yielding an overall recovery rate of 26.64%.
In 2021, 266 vehicles were reported stolen. This number surged to 409 in 2022 — the highest in the five-year period. Although thefts slightly dropped to 357 in 2023 and 346 in 2024, the first four months of 2025 have already recorded 142 cases, putting the year on track to exceed 420 thefts if the trend continues — a potential five-year high.
Year-by-year analysis reveals a decline in recovery efficiency in recent years. While the local police managed to recover 30.45% of stolen vehicles in 2021, and slightly more in 2022 (30.56%), the following years show a steady decline. The recovery rate dropped to 26.34% in 2023, then sharply down to 20.52% in 2024. Early 2025 figures show a slight improvement at 23.94%, but still far below the early years. The data points to a need for enhanced vehicle tracking, faster response protocols, and public awareness campaigns to improve recovery outcomes.

Nirmal Singh, inspector crime branch, Panchkula Police, told TOI that earlier, gangs used to operate, so at one point of arrest, even 40 to 50 vehicles used to get recovered. Now, vehicle lifting has shifted to individuals, who are mostly doing it for drugs, making the recovery of vehicles difficult. Even if a thief is caught, two to three bikes get recovered. Mostly, such thieves take out the body parts and sell them to scrap dealers.
The police last week directed all scrap dealers not to buy stolen items, else action will be taken against them. The police have also appealed to people to check all documents while buying a second-hand vehicle to ensure it is not a stolen one.
The police said mostly two-wheelers, particularly Activas, are stolen in Panchkula. Most such thefts take place at Yavnika Garden, Sector 5. It has three gates and three open parking lots, making it an easy spot for vehicle lifters.
The civil hospital area is another vulnerable area. Many people who park outside the hospital are at more risk. Other open unmanned parking lots are also easy targets for vehicle lifters.
The hot spots for vehicle lifting are Yavnika Garden, Sector 5, civil hospital, Sector 6, and other open unmanned parking lots

Auto parts makers gear up for profit squeeze

CHENNAI: What do the new tariffs by the US mean for India's auto component exporters? The math is complicated but the pinch is very real. According to auto analysts and industry experts, 15-20% of India's US-bound auto-component exports could be lost in the short term. The US is India's biggest exporting destination with 27% of auto parts exported there. Which means, says Jitin Makkar, group head & senior VP (corporate ratings) at ICRA, "around 8% of the Indian auto-component production will be impacted by the increase in tariffs". According to ACMA auto component exports to the US stood at nearly $7 billion in 2024. Of this, $3.6 billion - which covers parts and components for cars and small trucks - will attract 25% duty. But the real squeal will be in the balance $3-billion worth of exports that are part of a reciprocal tariff of 50%. This would include commercial vehicle parts, construction equipment components, off highway, tractor and farm equipment parts. While large OEMs are already looking at alternative markets, it is the sector mainstay MSME exporters that will hurt most. Take Noble Cast Comp, an aluminium casting manufacturer in Bhosari, that exports 60% of its products to the US. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Are you ready to conquer a planet? Undo The company's CMD Nitin Bhagwat said US customers were already demanding that they share the tariff burden, which would affect profit margins. Others like R K Industries in Pimpri Chinchwad exports computer numerical control machined components to global auto firms, with 20% going to the US. "Effects are expected to be felt from next month, with US customers likely seeking price reductions due to increased landing costs and clients may also explore alternative suppliers from countries with lower costs," said R K Industries's operations head Nilesh Khaire. While the effective duty can range anywhere from 25-28% to 45-50% depending on the different slabs, the pinch will differ on the basis of how sticky the product exported is. Ravindra Patki, managing partner at Vector Consulting Group said, "30-40% of India's auto component exports to the US comes from programmes in which India is one of multiple approved suppliers with a defined share of business." As for the larger exportable parts, Indian auto-component exporters will be at a disadvantage compared to other Asian countries like Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia which face a lower tariff of 15-19%. Component exporters however say a lot will depend upon their individual relationship with US-based buyers. Sipra Engineering MD M Umadi said, "US customers, accounting for 28-32% of exports, have assured support if we maintain cost, quality and delivery standards, but may request cost reductions later." Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton seeks jail time for Beto O'Rourke over fundraising violation amid redistricting battle

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked a judge to put Beto O'Rourke in jail. Paxton says O'Rourke broke a court order by raising money to help Democratic lawmakers who left Texas. Earlier this month, a Texas judge stopped O'Rourke and his nonprofit group, Powered by People, from fundraising to support the Democratic lawmakers' move out of Texas. Paxton claims O'Rourke ignored this order and kept asking for donations through the Democrat's ActBlue platform. Paxton said, 'He's about to find out that running your mouth and ignoring the rule of law has consequences in Texas. It's time to lock him up', as per the report by USA Today. Israel-Gaza conflict: Al Jazeera says 4, not 5, staff killed in Israeli strike; 2 victims were freelancers

Anas al-Sharif (AP) A recent Israeli airstrike killed four Al Jazeera journalists and two freelancers, the Qatar-based broadcaster said on Tuesday, correcting its earlier report that five of six victims were staff members. Initially, the network identified correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa as those killed in Sunday's attack. In a corrected report on its English-language website, Al-Jazeera clarified that Moamen Aliwa was a freelance cameraman and the sixth journalist killed in the attack, Mohammed al-Khalidi was also a freelancer. "An earlier version of this story referred to Israel killing five Al Jazeera staff. The number of Al Jazeera journalists Israel killed was four," Al Jazeera stated. The late Sunday strike on a tent outside the main gate of Gaza City's Al Shifa hospital has drawn international condemnation, and Al Jazeera has called the act an 'assassination.' Moments before his death, Anas al-Sharif, 28, an Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent known for his extensive reporting from northern Gaza, posted on X that Israel was carrying out intense, concentrated bombardments, referred to as 'fire belts', on Gaza city's eastern and Southern areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Indonesia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo The Israeli military acknowledged carrying out the strike, one of Al Jazeera's most recognisable correspondents, alleging he was a 'terrorist' who 'posed as a journalist,' reports AFP. Al Jazeera condemned the killings and rejected the allegations against Sharif, stating the Israeli attack came after "repeated incitement and calls by multiple Israeli officials and spokespersons to target the fearless journalist Anas Al Sharif and his colleagues." In a final message dated April 6, intended for release in the event of his death, al-Sharif wrote that he had 'lived the pain in all its details' and had 'tasted grief and loss repeatedly,' reported Al Jazeera. 'Despite that, I never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or misrepresentation, hoping that God would witness those who remained silent, those who accepted our killing, and those who suffocated our very breaths,' Sharif said. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) stated in early July that the war in Gaza has claimed the lives of over 200 journalists, including several working for Al Jazeera.
