Nishad Party to go solo in panchayat elections
Varanasi: UP minister of fisheries Sanjay Kumar Nishad on Thursday said the Nishad Party, a constituent of NDA in Uttar Pradesh, will contest the three-tier panchayat elections in 2025 independently in Nishad-dominated areas.
"The party will field its candidates for district panchayat member and BDC positions. After the election results, support will be given to the alliance partner BJP for the chairman and block chief positions," he told reporters.
He was in city on Thursday to attend the "fish farmers' fair and caste census seminar" held at Nagari Natak Mandali in the Kabirchaura area.
He added that the move was in line with the aspirations of party workers who had toiled hard for years.
"The alliance will remain intact, but there will be no compromise on the rights and dignity of the workers. Our party's aim is not to criticise any party but to be the voice of our community. The blood of 101% of the fishing community runs in the veins of the Nishad Party, and we will never let the hopes of the community be shattered. Our ideology will reach from the village to the capital," he said.
Addressing the seminar, Nishad provided information about the schemes run by the fisheries department.

He discussed the Prime Minister's Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), subsidies on ice boxes, fish vans, cold storage, pond construction, up to 60% subsidy for SC/ST/Women beneficiaries, special vehicle assistance for fish transport, Chief Minister's Matsya Yojana (MMSY), 40-60% subsidy on seeds, feed, equipment, accident insurance up to Rs 5 lakh, training programmes and employment generation, and other schemes like loan facilities under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC), availability of boats under the Nishad Raj Boat Scheme, digital registration and tracking system for fish farmers, among other topics.
"The goal of these schemes is not just financial aid but to make the community self-reliant," he said.
The minister said the caste census is not just about numbers, but about identifying constitutional rights. There is ongoing pressure on the govt to include sub-castes like Majhwar, Turaeha, Bind, Nishad, Kevat, Dheewar, Kashyap, etc, in the SC category.
Citing the 1961 census report, the 2016 notification, and the Uttarakhand model, he emphasised that they should be issued SC certificates in Uttar Pradesh as well to ensure meaningful participation in the schemes.
Nishad also offered prayers at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, wishing for the prosperity of the state and society.
