Nishad Party to go solo in panchayat elections

Time of India6 days ago

Varanasi: UP minister of fisheries Sanjay Kumar Nishad on Thursday said the Nishad Party, a constituent of NDA in Uttar Pradesh, will contest the three-tier panchayat elections in 2025 independently in Nishad-dominated areas.
"The party will field its candidates for district panchayat member and BDC positions. After the election results, support will be given to the alliance partner BJP for the chairman and block chief positions," he told reporters.
He was in city on Thursday to attend the "fish farmers' fair and caste census seminar" held at Nagari Natak Mandali in the Kabirchaura area.
He added that the move was in line with the aspirations of party workers who had toiled hard for years.
"The alliance will remain intact, but there will be no compromise on the rights and dignity of the workers. Our party's aim is not to criticise any party but to be the voice of our community. The blood of 101% of the fishing community runs in the veins of the Nishad Party, and we will never let the hopes of the community be shattered. Our ideology will reach from the village to the capital," he said.
Addressing the seminar, Nishad provided information about the schemes run by the fisheries department.

He discussed the Prime Minister's Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), subsidies on ice boxes, fish vans, cold storage, pond construction, up to 60% subsidy for SC/ST/Women beneficiaries, special vehicle assistance for fish transport, Chief Minister's Matsya Yojana (MMSY), 40-60% subsidy on seeds, feed, equipment, accident insurance up to Rs 5 lakh, training programmes and employment generation, and other schemes like loan facilities under the Kisan Credit Card (KCC), availability of boats under the Nishad Raj Boat Scheme, digital registration and tracking system for fish farmers, among other topics.
"The goal of these schemes is not just financial aid but to make the community self-reliant," he said.
The minister said the caste census is not just about numbers, but about identifying constitutional rights. There is ongoing pressure on the govt to include sub-castes like Majhwar, Turaeha, Bind, Nishad, Kevat, Dheewar, Kashyap, etc, in the SC category.
Citing the 1961 census report, the 2016 notification, and the Uttarakhand model, he emphasised that they should be issued SC certificates in Uttar Pradesh as well to ensure meaningful participation in the schemes.
Nishad also offered prayers at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, wishing for the prosperity of the state and society.

India will not talk to Pakistan with gun pointed at our head: Shashi Tharoor

US correspondent from US: An Indian parliamentary team tasked with highlighting Pakistan's terrorist depredations has conveyed to US interlocutors that New Delhi will not talk to Islamabad "with a gun pointed to our head" even as a Pakistani delegation tailing the Indian team in Washington DC desperately sought President Trump's mediation between the two sides. Summing up India's stance, delegation leader Shashi Tharoor likened Pakistan to a neighbor who "unleashes a rottweiler to bite your children and do worse and then says 'let's talk." Talks are not possible unless Pakistan locks up the rottweilers (terrorists) or puts them to sleep, Tharoor said. Tharoor also rejected efforts to insinuate US into bilateral issues saying India has enormous respect for the American presidency and the American president, but "we have never particularly wanted to ask anyone to mediate." India can speak all the languages Pakistan speaks and is happy to talk to them in any of them if they roll up their terrorism policy and infrastructure, "but as long as they use the language of terrorism, we will use the language of force. That doesn't require a third party,' Tharoor said, even as the team from Islamabad, in its meetings, rolled out the familiar trope of "Pakistan is a victim of terrorism," which the Indian delegation ridiculed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo In one vivid presentation, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya listed five Pakistanis and five Indians who are famous in the US to highlight the difference between the two countries. For Pakistan: Ramzi Yousuf, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, Faisal Shahzad, Tashfeen Malik, and Muhammad Shahzeb Khan -- all of whom conducted terrorist attacks on the US. For India: Indra Nooyi, Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, Ajay Banga, Arvind Krishna -- all corporate titans who have generated billions in economic activity in the US. "India gives tech titans, Pak gives terrorists," Surya noted. The Indian delegation met US vice-president JD Vance on Thursday morning to convey India's stand after engaging dozens of US lawmakers from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the India Caucus, which has nearly 200 legislators, including 40 Senators, compared to the Pakistan Caucus, which has only around 50 members -- a differential the Indian side mentioned to highlight the breadth of support for India. The Pakistani team meanwhile labored to make an impression on the few meetings its cobbled together on the Hill, insisting that the Kashmir issue was an 'unfinished agenda of the United Nations' despite being outed repeatedly on UN resolutions that seek Pakistan's withdrawal from the territory it has occupied. "Raised concerns over India's recent provocations, the deepening humanitarian crisis in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir," Bhutto posted on X after one such meeting, even though there is no humanitarian crisis in J&K other than terrorist attacks initiated by Pakistan. The Indian delegation in fact told US interlocutors that J&K was seeing unprecedented economic activity and travel boom, "with more tourists than in Aspen, Colorado" before Pahalgam terrorist attack.

Ram Temple moves towards completion, idol of 'Raja Ram' consecrated

The idol of Raja Ram was consecrated and the Ram Darbar inaugurated at the Ram Jamnabhoomi complex on Thursday, a major step towards completion of a grand temple that has been at the intersection of political and religious discourse for three decades. The city was festooned and lit up as priests gathered at the first floor of the Ram temple to install the almost five-feet white marbled statue of Raja Ram, the god in his royal form, amid the chanting of hymns and elaborate rituals. The Ram Darbar also features the idols of Sita, Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughn and Hanuman. The day, chosen to coincide with the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, comes 16 months after the consecration of Ram Lalla, the child god, on January 22, 2024. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo While Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the top government brass and a host of celebrities were present at the high octane occasion then, the event this time was quieter. Among those conducting the ceremony today were Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, also the head priest of the Gorakhnath Mutt in Gorakhpur, along with other priests. Devotees, unmindful of curbs, stood outside the temple complex, singing, dancing and chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' all the while. Live Events Restrictions on vehicular movement during the inauguration ceremony by the administration and the temple trust's decision to not issue temple entry passes to visitors between 9 am to 3 pm on Thursday failed to deter the devotees, some who had come from as far as Nepal. Gogan Prasad, from Nepal's capital Kathmandu, was one such devotee. "I have waited for this moment for long. I had been praying for more than a year for an opportunity to have darshan of Lord Ram. Now that wish will be granted," said Prasad who had come from Nepal with a large group of devotees who also appeared overwhelmed on the occasion. Also in the crowd was Alamin, a Muslim woman dressed in a traditional black burqa, waiting along with the others to be allowed to enter the temple. She was seen singing devotional songs, drawing much attention. The BJP, which is in power at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, said in a post on X, "The second festival of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha concluded today in Ayodhya. A step towards Ram Rajya." The ceremony took place during the Abhijit Muhurat, considered one of the most auspicious moments in the Hindu calendar. The consecration of the deities began with prayers at the 'yajna mandap' at 6.30 am, followed by a 'havan' at 9 am, which lasted an hour. Thereafter, centralised rituals began simultaneously across all temple shrines, aided by visual technology like cameras and large screens, ensuring synchronicity of the ceremonies. According to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, among the deities consecrated were Shri Ram Darbar (central installation), Sheshavatar, Lord Shiva in the northeast (Ishan) corner, Lord Ganesha in the southeast (Agni) corner, Lord Hanuman at the southern wing, Surya (Sun God) in the southwest (Nairitya) corner, Goddess Bhagwati in the northwest (Vayavya) corner and Goddess Annapurna in the northern wing. The temple, built in the traditional Nagara style, spans 360 feet in length, 235 feet in width, and rises 161 feet high. Spread across 2.77 acres, the three-storey structure features 392 carved pillars, 44 doors and richly sculpted depictions of Hindu deities. Ram Temple trustee Anil Mishra told PTI that the ceremonies were performed in accordance with Vedic traditions. "The day of Ganga Dussehra will symbolise a new beginning. It will be the moment when the fruits of centuries of penance, struggle, and faith will manifest in tangible form," he said. According to Hindu scriptures, Ganga Dussehra marks the day the holy river Ganga descended to Earth from Lord Shiva's locks, moved by King Bhagirath's penance. The day is considered highly auspicious and symbolises virtue, penance, and the collective well-being of humanity. "This year, Ganga Dussehra will not only be sacred but also historic, as after a long struggle of 500 years, Lord Ram, known as Raja Ram, will be ceremonially installed on the first floor of the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya," Mahant Raghuvar Sharan, chief priest of Rasik Niwas Temple in Ayodhya, told PTI ahead of the event. Adityanath offered prayers at the Ram Temple and visited the Hanumangarhi temple nearby. Adding a political touch to the proceedings of the day, he said in a post on X, "This auspicious occasion is a new expression of 'Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat'. Victory to Siyavar Shri Ramachandra!" "Today, in the holy birthplace of Lord Shri Ram, Ayodhya Dham, we are getting the great fortune of becoming a witness to the programme organised for the Pran-Pratishtha of the holy idols of gods in the eight temples including Shri Ram Darbar on the first floor of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple," he said. The inauguration of the temple in January 2024 had marked the culmination of a decades-long campaign, mostly under the Hindutva banner, to reclaim a disputed religious site in Ayodhya. It was months before the Lok Sabha elections and 34 years after BJP veteran L K Advani's 'Mandir Wahin Banayenge' speech during his Rath yatra that shaped Ram mandir politics. The 16th century Babri mosque at the spot where many Hindu devotees believe is the place where Ram was born was the centre of a simmering dispute for decades. The mosque was demolished by 'kar sewaks' on December 6, 1992, triggering communal riots that left hundreds dead. After a long legal battle, the Supreme Court in 2019 ruled in favour of the construction of the temple. It also ordered allotment of a five-acre plot for building a mosque. The scrapping of Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, building a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya and the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code(UCC) have been BJP's poll plank for decades.

Iran 'strongly' condemns US veto of UN Gaza ceasefire resolution

Displaced Palestinians return to retrieve their belongings from their homes in the area where the Israeli army operated in the northern Gaza Strip (AP) TEHRAN: Iran on Thursday denounced the United States on Thursday for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire and full humanitarian access in Gaza. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said in a statement that the US move to block the resolution, which was supported by 14 of the 15 members of the council, demonstrated "the country's complicity in the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and strongly condemned it". The draft resolution had demanded "an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza respected by all parties" and the unconditional release of hostages held by Hamas in the war-torn Gaza Strip. It also called for the lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the territory. Baqaei said the veto "is not only an explicit affront by the US government to the will of the international community ... but also a sign of the moral decline of American decision-makers" and evidence of Washington's complicity in Israel's killing of Palestinians. Washington's envoy to the UN, Dorothy Shea, said on Wednesday that passing the resolution "would undermine diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire that reflects the realities on the ground and emboldens Hamas," which is backed by Iran. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Tehran, which does not recognise Israel, has framed the Palestinian cause as a central tenet of its foreign policy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
