Selima Optique And Zankov Launch Capsule Sunglass Collaboration

According to social media (and many Gen X and Boomers who live here), there is a yearning for the glory days of old New York. In the bygone era, many attributes were the sort of magical connections that took place in IRL and were not masterminded in boardrooms or via digital platforms. Instead, these kismet moments happened when creative worlds collided while out and about, most likely in New York's social scene. A meeting such as this was the genesis for a new eyewear collaboration between Selima Optique and ZANKOV. That's how the collaboration between these two creatives happened. It was while both were dining at the classic eatery Il Buco, a NoHo staple since 1994 and just down the street from Selima Optique, which opened in 1993. The eyewear institution Selima Salaun is also a bit of a NoHo fixture, and spotted Henry Zankov dining in the restaurant. Curious by nature, the optical entrepreneur approached the fashion designer she had seen around town and introduced herself. It turned out that Zankov was also a fan of Selima's work. The bond over the mutual love of fashion was instant. Several chance meetings followed; thus, the pair was certain it was fate that they collaborate creatively. The result is a three-style limited-edition capsule sunglass collection that 'celebrates the intersection of bold design and effortless elegance, an embodiment of the spirit shared by both,' according to a release. The styles debuted with the Spring 2025 ZANKOV collection and hit retail distribution this week. The Toni sunglasses in Capri blue. Ph Credits: Courtesy of Selima/Zankov. From a starting point of styles core to Selima Optique's oeuvre—the Aleksandr, a bold square acetate frame with dynamic color contrasts between the face and arms; the Toni, an aviator style with a lightweight metal frame, inspired by the eyewear worn by Italian police in the 1970s and the Carolyn, a minimalist classic inspired by Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy—Zankov applied his strong color combos in bright hues to the frames. This is especially prominent in the Aleksandr and Carolyn styles, which demonstrate Zankov's bold color aesthetic. Nary, a pair of black frames is found in this collection. Instead, frames in hues such as red and lavender, navy, royal blue and Electric yellow, Carrot orange, and Capri Blue prevail. The sunglasses are available at Bergdorf Goodman and Selima Optique. The duo hosted a party at Selima Optique at 7 Bond Street to fete the new partnership.

Angelina Jolie looks chic in a sheer black dress and heels as she visits her Atelier shop in NYC

was looking suitably chic for a visit to her New York City store on Wednesday night. The Hollywood star opened Atelier Jolie last year, with the store a creative hub for fashion designers and artists. Angelina looked gorgeous in a sheer black dress for her late night visit, showing off her legs and lace-trimmed slip under the flimsy number. She added black heels and statement aviator shades, completing her look with a black satin robe coat. Atelier Jolie's 6,600 sq ft space boasts an inviting café and an art gallery and hosts classes on how to be creative with clothing. Inside the store hangs clothing from sustainable brands from all over the world, Atelier Jolie's own collection, art, and a café run by refugees called Eat Offbeat. It is in New York's NoHo neighborhood that was formerly the studio and home of Jean-Michel Basquiat, per WSJ. Last year Jolie told WSJ that she will 'probably lose money, maybe even for a while' on her store. 'If I can eventually put into practice some things that I think are improvements and I just break even, that's a huge victory,' said the Salt star. Angelina is juggling her new venture alongside her movie work with her next role recently confirmed. The actress will star alongside The White Lotus' Aimee Lou Wood in Anxious People, according to Deadline. The project will be directed by Marc Forster (World War Z), from the 2019 novel of the same name by Fredrik Backman (A Man Called Ove). Forster previously adapted Backman's A Man Called Ove into the 2022 film A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks. The director will also reunite with David Magee, who adapted A Man Called Otto and Forster's 2004 film Finding Neverland. The film is set the day before Christmas Eve, when and investment banker named Zara (Jolie), 'begrudgingly finds herself mingling with a group of strangers at an open house.' Wood plays, 'a reluctant bank robber' named Grace, who inadvertently takes the strangers hostage as chaos ensues. Nothing ultimately goes to Grace's plan as secrets are revealed and oversharing ensues in the film. The story is, 'about a crime that never took place, a would-be bank robber who disappears into thin air, and eight extremely anxious strangers who find they have more in common than they ever imagined.'

A Fish Cheeks In Brooklyn: The Iconic Thai Eatery's New Location

For Thai cuisine in New York, it feels like there are two eras: Before Fish Cheeks and After Fish Cheeks. Before, menus at Thai restaurants were pretty interchangeable: Pad Thai, Massaman curry, satay and the like. Fish Cheeks, founded in 2016, blew that template up, with its emphasis on traditional seafood dishes, inventive cocktails, and conspicuous lack of standard Thai-merican dishes. It created a sensation when it opened in NoHo in 2016, and the lines out the door are still a nightly fixture almost a decade later. It seems a little overdue for Fish Cheeks to finally be opening its second location, in Williamsburg, as of May 13. But better late than never, right? All the old favorites — the coconut crab curry, the Zaab wings, and the whole fried fish, to name a few — are making the migration, but there are a few new exclusive eats and drinks that will make an A-B comparison between the original and the sequel worth traveling for. The very swanky looking bar at Fish Cheeks Williamsburg. Photo by Connie Zhou The old favorites from the original Fish Cheeks have been thoroughly fawned over elsewhere, so I won't focus on them here (although, seriously, if you haven't tried the coconut crab curry, put it on the to-do list immediately). The new eats and drinks I tried are worth the trek even if you live around the corner from the NoHo location. The difference between the two menus can, I think, be summed up in one cocktail. The Spicy Mango in NoHo is made with tequila, mango juice, lime, and a chili tincture; the sweetness of the juice balances out the heat of the tincture. It's a terrific drink. But the Spicy Mango 2.0, dreamed up by beverage director Nannawat Bunphet and available in Williamsburg, uses mezcal as the base spirit. It employs, from what I can tell, less juice. It's spicier and smokier and more bracing. Is it better than the original? I don't know. But it seems more... exciting? The other new cocktail I tried, the Plara-tini, is said to be a Thai-influenced take on a dirty martini. And yeah, I can see that, but I generally hate dirty martinis and yet I loved this drink, featuring anchovy brine (!) and papaya salad dressing (!!). It's savory and salty but, despite the description, not too briny, and super-duper flavorful where many dirty 'tinis are one-dimensional. I can't vouch for the Something Banana, with dill, pineapple, tomato, and a ginger-banana foam, since I didn't try it, but it certainly sounds interesting. On the left, Spicy Mango 2.0. On the right, the original Spicy Mango. Photo by Tony Sachs A pair of dishes are making their debut on the Williamsburg food menu. The one that stood out to me is marinated raw blue crab cured in lime juice, fish sauce, Thai chili, and shallot. It's bright and spicy and citrusy and fresh and altogether wonderful... and very raw. Fish Cheeks patrons hardly seem like the squeamish type, but I was curious about whether executive chef Dustin Everett foresaw any negative reactions to a dish that's outside the typical sensibilities of an American diner — even when that American is a New Yorker. 'I don't see the crab dish as pushing boundaries,' he replied. 'It's about honoring the authenticity of Thai cuisine and the cultural context behind the flavors.... It's less about being provocative and more about inviting guests to expand their palates and experience the richness of Thai food.' Having tried said crabs, I can vouch that the tenderness of the meat and the complexity of the flavors was worth the until-very-recently-alive qualities of the crabs. The other newbie is Tom Yum Noodles, a comfort-foody dish that's firmly in the tradition of eating noodles to symbolize long life around Songkran, or New Year. 'In Thailand, this dish is often made with instant ramen,' Everett told me. 'It's a late-night staple for students and has this nostalgic, comforting feel.' Fish Cheeks upgraded to ramen made by Sun Noodle, which Everett describes as 'the gold standard here in New York — they bring the texture, freshness, and consistency that elevate the dish while keeping it true to its roots.' The spicy-sour soup, which aside from the thin noodles is studded with pork, egg yolk, mussels and other seafood, is stupendous — I wouldn't quite pick it over the coconut crab curry, but I certainly wouldn't mind inhaling the two together, carb overload aside. Between the old classics and the new classics-to-be, plus the snazzy look of the place, the new Fish Cheeks gives Brooklynites a reason to celebrate — and eat out. And for Manhattanites... well, it gives us another reason to get on the L Train. (661 Driggs Ave., Williamsburg)

Liberal megadonor Alex Soros and consultant fiancée among Dems ridiculed over 'tone-deaf' magazine feature

Liberal megadonor Alex Soros has been ridiculed for appearing in a 'tone-deaf' magazine feature showing off his ritzy high-rise apartment amongst other notable New York City Democrats. In an article from The New Yorker, named 'Power Houses Inside the living rooms of notable New Yorkers', the 39-year-old appeared alongside his partner Huma Abedin. Abedin is a former staffer for Hillary Clinton while Soros is the son of the 94-year-old Democratic megadonor George Soros. Other notable Dems include the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rev. Al Sharpton, and Kamala Harris ' stepdaughter Ella Emhoff, all of whom live in the Big Apple. The pictures of them went viral on social media, with people poking fun at Soros and his recent focus on fighting oligarchy and Trump while inside a plush NoHo apartment with expansive views across the city. Reverend Al Sharpton meanwhile was lampooned for posing for a photo alongside a painting of himself hanging in his Upper East Side living room. Republican staffer Steve Guest poked fun at the picture of Sharpton, saying: 'Of course Al Sharpton has a photo of just himself hanging on his wall.' Democratic congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez,who famously wore a 'Tax the Rich' dress at the 2021 Met Gala, appeared alongside one of the world's richest men in the spread, posing with her French bulldog in her East Elmhurst abode. Lades and gentlemen, the Democrat party — Comfortably Smug (@ComfortablySmug) May 5, 2025 Emhoff, described in the article as a textile artist in the article, posed inside her incredibly colorful apartment in the Lower East Side of the city. The article also featured the con artist Ana Sorokin, who faked being a wealthy heiress in order to access the upper-class of New York and their social circles, wearing an ankle monitor. But it was Soros who came under the heaviest fire, with contributing editor to The Spectator Stephen L. Miller reacted to the photo of Soros and Abedin, writing: 'Sure, let's have that oligarchy conversation.' Another commenter added: 'Absolutely incredible. The poses. The 'very serious' facial expressions. Just a continuous scrolling gallery of the worst people possible. 'Babylon Bee couldn't do it better. The crown though is Alex Soros 'investor'. LMAO.' One other commented: 'These photos have convinced me that there is no uniting the country. Ever. 'The Venn diagram of these people and the people I live/ work around have zero overlap.' 'Hey AOC and Bernie Sanders, here's your Oligarchs. Dystopian weirdos!', another said, referencing a tour of the country by the two politicians to combat Oligarchy. Sure let's have that oligarchy conversation. — Stephen L. Miller (@redsteeze) May 5, 2025 Commentators online poked fun at Rev. Al Sharpton, seen here on Monday night at the Met Gala, after he was seen to have a portrait of himself inside his own living room One other added: 'Democrats are so unrelatable. No wonder America loves them so!' Despite the overwhelming majority of those involved in the piece being liberal, New York City Councilor Vickie Paladino, a staunch conservative, was also featured. Other notable figures included legendary film director Martin Scorsese, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and actor and model Chloë Sevigny. Alongside the pictures, writer Noami Fry added that they came about as a throwback to a similar spread the magazine did in 1995. She added: ' It was to celebrate the magazine's centenary, the photographer Gillian Laub was asked to revisit a similar brief, but this time she included the inhabitants.' Soros last week told the New York Magazine that he considered himself his father's 'loyal parasite'. With the second Trump administration in full swing, Alex is hoping to use his father's vast fortune to severely limit the president's power. His vague plan appears to be spending big in the upcoming midterm elections to elect Democrats and erase GOP majorities in the House and Senate. 'We're not subscribed to a strategy, because I think anybody that has a strategy right now is crazy,' Alex said, adding that 'now is the time to play defense.'
