NYCFC, Red Bulls set to renew rivalry for first time since postseason showdown
While revenge isn't top of mind for New York City FC's Justin Haak, the chance to play a rival always gets the juices flowing for the midfielder. In this case, it's the New York Red Bulls. Saturday will be the latest installment of the Hudson River Derby, which received a serious infusion of excitement last year when the two clubs met in the postseason for the first time. Imagn Images 'I don't think it's revenge, because if we win this game, it's not going to get us through the playoffs last year, because that's already over,' Haak told The Post. 'It's a new game. There's going to be some new players, different players on the field, but every single time we play them, we definitely want to win. And there's always more emotion in these games.' The match at Citi Field will be the first taste of the rivalry for new NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen since he took over in January. Advertisement Speaking with reporters from NYCFC's practice facility in Rockland County, Jansen echoed similar sentiments about the 'extra' emotions that come with a derby match, but said he wanted the club to lean into some of the memories from past games. 'Thinking back and bringing up memories from games played in the past always helps — because, like you described, emotions are there, and we have to learn from those moments to be better prepared going into the next game,' he said. Both teams are headed into the Hudson River Derby — ironically the same weekend as the city's two MLB teams square off in The Bronx — with an identical 5-5-3 (18 points) record, and each club is clinging to one of the final two playoff positions in the Eastern Conference. Imagn Images The match presents the sides with a chance not only to get a victory after each failed to win Wednesday, but also to springboard forward as the regular season hits its stride. 'It's a big chance to get that kind of elevation into the season,' Red Bulls defender Noah Eile told The Post by Phone. 'If you could get a good result there, then we get a real big push, especially in such a big game for the whole club. I think that's a great point to make that winning here can have a big impact on the rest of the season.' While the Red Bulls have been good at home, they've struggled to find wins on the road, currently 0-4-2 away from Sports Illustrated Stadium. Imagn Images New York City FC, on the other hand, has felt quite comfortable at home this year, posting a 4-2-0 record at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field combined, but are struggling to put the ball in the net. NYCFC has not scored in their past three matches, which include a loss in the U.S. Open Cup and two prior regular-season games. 'I think as a team, we're doing well to create chances,' Haak said. 'We had a few opportunities. I would say maybe it's just a little bit unlucky now, and guys are maybe thinking a little bit too much in front of the goal when you have a run like this. 'But with the players we have, we have absolutely no doubt that the goals are going to come.'

Messi, Miami bounce back crush Red Bulls
FORT LAUDERDALE: Inter Miami's Argentine forward #10 Lionel Messi fights for the ball with the New York Red Bulls' Swedish defender #03 Noah Eile during the MLS football match between Inter Miami FC and the New York Red Bulls on May 3, 2025. – AFP MIAMI: Lionel Messi was on target as Inter Miami bounced back from their CONCACAF Champions Cup exit, beating the New York Red Bulls 4-1 at Chase Stadium on Saturday. Miami had lost their last three games, including a 5-1 aggregate defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps in the Champions Cup semi-finals, but they got a much-needed morale boost with a comfortable Major League Soccer victory. Fafa Picault opened the scoring in the ninth minute, blasting home at the back post after Luis Suarez had flicked on a cross from Marcelo Weigandt. Full-back Weigandt doubled the advantage in the 30th minute when his diving header was parried by Carlos Coronel and the Argentine followed in to scoop the ball home. The goal was initially flagged for offside but after a VAR review the referee ruled it should stand. Suarez made it 3-0 nine minutes later, firing home at the second attempt after his initial shot had been blocked but the Red Bulls pulled a goal back before the break. An Omar Valencia corner deep to the back post was looped over Oscar Ustari and into the far corner to give the visitors some hope for the second half. Miami stayed on top, however, and Messi extended their advantage in the 67th minute, playing a one-two with Telasco Segovia and holding off Noah Eile before beating Coronel with a left-foot finish. The goal ended a run of four matches without Messi being on the scoresheet and the win moved Miami up to fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Elsewhere, former Saint-Etienne midfielder Dylan Chambost opened his account in MLS with the first goal in the Columbus Crew's 4-2 win over Charlotte. The Crew lead the East on 24 points, two ahead of the Philadelphia Union, who continued their excellent season with a 2-1 win at Montreal with Danish striker Mikael Uhre grabbing an 84th-minute winner. DC United beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 with goals from Christian Benteke and a volley from Japanese midfielder Hosei Kijima.- AFP
