Kunak rep pooh-poohs drug cartel ties claims

Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: FMT Text Size: Norazlinah said she has instructed her legal team to take immediate action against the TikTok account owner and anyone who spreads the allegations. PETALING JAYA: Kunak assemblyman Norazlinah Arif has rubbished claims in a viral TikTok video that she and her husband had received funds from a drug cartel in Sabah. Norazlinah, formerly of Warisan, dismissed the claims as baseless and malicious. Checks found that the video in question cannot be accessed on TikTok anymore. 'I firmly deny these slanderous claims in the strongest terms. All the allegations involving my husband and I are untrue, malicious in intent, defamatory, and an attempt to tarnish my reputation as the Kunak assemblyman,' she said in a statement. The Kunak Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah chief said neither she nor her husband had ever been involved in drug activities in any way. She said the allegations were a deliberate attempt to damage her reputation and erode public trust. Norazlinah said she has instructed her legal team to take immediate action against the TikTok account owner and anyone who spreads the allegations. 'As the assemblyman for Kunak, I will continue to focus on fulfilling my mandate and serving the people, unaffected by irresponsible attempts to discredit me,' said the two-term representative. Norazlinah won the Kunak state seat on a Warisan ticket in 2018 and 2020. She was formerly head of the party's women's wing. She left the party in February 2023 to join Gagasan Rakyat, a component of ruling state coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan denies Kunak YB's ‘Langkah Kinabalu' claim

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Azhar, who is also Darau Assemblyman, denied Norazlinah's allegation that Warisan is no longer a local party due to its expansion into Peninsula Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Treasurer-General Datuk Azhar Matussin rejected Kunak Assemblywoman Norazlinah Arif's claim that the party was involved in the 'Langkah Kinabalu' political episode in Jan 2023. He said, at the time, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) was leading the State Government, with Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor still a member of Bersatu Sabah within the GRS coalition. Barisan Nasional (BN) and Hajiji were in the same Cabinet, while Warisan was in the State Opposition. ''Langkah Kinabalu' was an internal dispute between BN and Bersatu/GRS over power. 'Warisan was not in Hajiji's Cabinet and did not have the numbers to bring down the Government. Blaming Warisan is simply an attempt to twist the facts,' he said in a statement, Friday. Azhar, who is also Darau Assemblyman, denied Norazlinah's allegation that Warisan is no longer a local party due to its expansion into Peninsula Malaysia. He emphasised that the move was to ensure Sabah's voice was heard in Parliament and national decision-making. Azhar questioned her credibility, citing her record of party-hopping and suggesting her criticism of Warisan was aimed at winning favour with her new political leader rather than genuinely fighting for the people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? GRS achieved MA63 gains, not Warisan

Published on: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 16, 2025 Text Size: Norazlinah and Mohammad Mohamarin. Kota Kinabalu: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has made great strides in securing the rights of Sabahans under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), a state lawmaker said, adding that Warisan's efforts pale in comparison. Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif said the ruling coalition carried out its task quietly and without resorting to political grandstanding. The Kunak Assemblywoman said although Warisan leveraged MA63 to consolidate public support during its time in office between 2018 and 2020, very little progress was achieved. 'At the time they claimed to have resolved 17 of the 21 MA63 demands,' she said. 'However, in 2023, then Sabah and Sarawak Affairs Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali clarified that those points had already been agreed upon previously at the policy level but were not implemented.' At that time, Armizan rejected Warisan's claim, asserting that no right could be deemed secured unless it had been fully implemented for the public's benefit. 'GRS very rarely uses MA63 to score political points, but it has overseen encouraging results, such as the increase in the interim payments (by Putrajaya to the state) to RM600 million,' the former Wanita Warisan chief said. In 2022, Putrajaya agreed to pay Sabah RM125.6 million by way of a special grant, up from an annual allocation of RM26.7 million previously. The following year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim authorised an interim payment to the state of RM300 million, before doubling the amount this year. 'I am confident that if GRS remains in government, many of our rights will be restored — just as regulatory control over Sabah's power supply was successfully returned to the State Government,' said Norazlinah. In March, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof said apart from these two issues, the Unity and State governments had resolved an additional nine key MA63-related claims. These include the recognition of the state's public works and irrigation and drainage departments as technical departments for the purposes of Treasury Instruction 182 (AP182). Also, the Inland Revenue Board Act 1995 has been amended to allow a Sabah representative to sit as a permanent board member. Special guidelines are also being drawn up to govern the resumption of land reserved for federal purposes in the state. On Sept 12, the Federal Government is scheduled to deliberate on Sabah's proposal to reclaim its 40 per cent net revenue entitlement. Meanwhile, Banggi Assemblyman Mohammad Mohamarin raised doubts about his former party Warisan's commitment to the resolution of MA63 issues. He recalled that there was very little meaningful discussion on the subject during his time in the party. 'Under GRS, the matter would be raised (at the coalition's pre-council meeting) every time a state assembly sitting approaches,' he said. Mohammad said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor would touch on efforts made to introduce or amend enactments linked to MA63 and how his government intended to go about securing these rights. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Not easy for Chinese to trust Warisan: ‘Party favoured certain ethnic group and practised nepotism in appointments' claim

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Norazlinah and Mohammad. Kota Kinabalu: A former Warisan leader says the party may face difficulty securing support from Chinese voters in Sabah due to several unpopular decisions made during its tenure in government, including perceived favouritism towards certain communities in public sector appointments. Norazlinah Arif, the party's former Wanita chief, claimed there was internal dissatisfaction with Party President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's leadership between May 2018 and September 2020, particularly over the appointment of state department heads. The Kunak Assemblywoman said Warisan failed to uphold its own 'unity' slogan when it ran the State Government by allowing widespread nepotism in appointments to senior positions. 'It's not just the Chinese. Other races also did not feel Warisan was fighting for Sabah anymore,' she said. Norazlinah, who left Warisan on Feb 6, 2023, said the party's decision to exit Pakatan Harapan and contest the 15th general election independently also complicated its relationship with Chinese voters. Which was why GE15 saw Warisan lose the Penampang and Sepanggar seats to Pakatan. Referring to Shafie recently unveiling the party's new 'Save Sabah' slogan, positioning Warisan as a Sabah party to win voters over, she said such rhetoric would only lead Warisan to repeat its 2020 state election defeat. 'How can we believe in a party, which was supposedly established on the basis of unity, but only focuses on certain communities?' she said. Mohammad Mohamarin, another Assemblyman who left Warisan together with Norazlinah, said the 'Save Sabah' slogan failed to address basic issues such as water, electricity and roads. The Banggi representative said the party's narrative makes Sabah seem like it is in dire straits, even though Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has been working hard to resolve the state's longstanding issues. 'In the Warisan state government, we waited for over two years for initiatives to resolve these issues. We were forced to meet with the chief minister (Shafie) but received no aid. 'The current (Gabungan Rakyat Sabah) State Government has implemented many initiatives, so the notion that Warisan will 'save Sabah' is not accurate,' said the former Warisan supreme council member. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Youths must show patriotism in daily life: YB

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Norazlinah signing the KMJG 2025 record book. KUNAK: Young people must play their part in showing love and loyalty to the country, said Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif. She said youths should fulfil their responsibilities as Malaysians by demonstrating patriotism in their daily lives. 'My call is especially to the youths in Kunak, Sabah and throughout Malaysia — let us fulfil our responsibilities as citizens. Despite whatever polemics may arise, we must first prove our commitment to the nation. Before voicing too many negative views, it is far more important to set a good example, and that example must come from within ourselves. Let us prove our love and patriotism for our country,' she said after officiating the Kunak District-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 programme. Norazlinah said youths should not be excluded from nurturing a love for the nation. She commended Kunak's youth for winning first and second place in the National Storytelling competition organised by the Malaysia Information Department (JaPen). 'This shows that young people are no exception in having love for the country. I believe competitions and activities like these can inspire greater patriotism among our youths,' she said. The KMJG 2025 convoy, led by Sabah JaPen Director Jainisah Mohd Noor, arrived at the Kunak Youth Arena Hall after a 10-day journey covering 37 stops. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
