Axia driver in viral overloaded car video had head injury, say cops

SEPANG: A man seen dangerously driving a Perodua Axia overloaded with items along the Dengkil-Banting road in a viral video has been identified by police, authorities confirmed yesterday. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman said police sighted the viral video after it was uploaded to a Facebook account at 10am yesterday. "Following this, we located the vehicle and found it along Jalan Dengkil-Banting about an hour later on the same day," he said in a statement today. Preliminary investigations revealed that the 59-year-old local driver holds a valid driving licence and that the vehicle's documentation was in order. "Further checks found that the driver had been involved in a road accident several years ago which resulted in head injuries. He claimed he was not feeling well in relation to the incident," Norhizam said. The man has since been released on police bail by his family, and the vehicle has been detained under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for inspection and further action. "The district police headquarters is conducting a thorough investigation and advises the public not to speculate in ways that could interfere with the process," he said. The police also urged the public to continue channelling information related to activities or behaviours that endanger road users via the official police channels. The video, which circulated widely on social media yesterday, showed a Perodua Axia driven by a man carrying an excessive load including rubbish, baskets, bed frames, and various other items strapped to the roof of the car. Other videos posted by netizens showed some of the load falling onto the road, obstructing traffic and posing a serious hazard to other road users.
