Travel agent remanded over alleged threats against Malaysian couple in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: The travel agent arrested for allegedly threatening a married couple in Japan in January has been remanded for four days starting today to assist in investigations.
Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman confirmed the matter today.
"The court has granted a four-day remand order for the suspect starting today until July 19," he said.
Earlier, Norhizam said that the remand application for the 36-year-old Malaysian man was submitted this morning at the Sepang Magistrate's Court in a media release last night.
The travel agent was arrested at a restaurant in Sepang yesterday following a police report lodged by the couple on Jan 28 after they returned from Japan.
Norhizam said the suspect was an acquaintance of the couple through a travel agency.
Preliminary investigations suggest the motive stemmed from dissatisfaction over the handling of a tourist trip to Japan.
The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which carries a punishment of imprisonment, a fine, or both.
According to previous reports, the victim, Noornabilla Azemi, 36, who is also a tour guide, claimed she was assaulted, had her head slammed against a bed frame, and threatened with death by the suspect while at a friend's rented house in Japan on Jan 24.
The incident was witnessed by her husband, Mohamad Zhaza Mohamad, 34, who also claimed he was assaulted and lost 75,000 yen (RM2,300) in cash.

Labourer Acquitted Of Murdering Single Mother, Her Male Friend

JOHOR BAHRU, July 18 (Bernama) -- The High Court here today discharged and acquitted a labourer of a charge of murdering a single mother and her male friend at a flat unit in Taman Ungku Aminah, Skudai here, seven years ago. Judge Datuk Abu Bakar Katar made the ruling after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against the accused, M. Jaykumar, 39, at the close of its case. In his judgment, Abu Bakar said the prosecution had failed to prove that the deaths of K. Kamala, 51, and S. Silvaraja, 59, were caused by injuries inflicted by the accused. He said the court also took into account that no traces of the victims' blood were found on the accused's clothes or belongings, and that the investigating officer did not seize these items to test for the victims' deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). 'The prosecution also failed to prove that the jewellery pawned by the accused belonged to Kamala, as her children could not confirm its ownership during testimony. There is reasonable doubt since some jewellery was still found with Kamala,' he said. 'The prosecution attempted to rely on the theory that the accused was the last person seen with the victims, setting the timeline between 7 pm on Oct 31 and 3 am on Nov 1. 'However, according to a witness, Kamala was still on the phone at 11.50 pm. How could the prosecution fix 7 pm as the starting time when the victim was still alive? This court finds that without other supporting evidence, it is insufficient to link the accused to the murders,' the judge said. M. Jaykumar was charged with the murders of K. Kamala and S. Silvaraja at a flat unit in Jalan Hang Jebat 14, Taman Ungku Aminah, between 7 pm and 3 am on Oct 31 and Nov 1, 2018. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Injured Swiss climber rescued after falling during hike on Indonesia's Mount Rinjani

The man, identified as Swiss national Benedikt Emmenegger, was transported by helicopter to Bali after being rescued from Mount Rinjani. - JOSHUA BANJARNAHOR/INSTAGRAM JAKARTA: An injured Swiss climber has been rescued after falling during a hike on Indonesia's Mount Rinjani volcano, just weeks after the death of a Brazilian woman there. The man, identified as 46-year-old Benedikt Emmenegger, broke his leg after falling on July 16, Indonesian news agency Antara reported on July 17, citing Mount Rinjani National Park Authority head Gede Mustika. The volcano is located on Lombok island, adjacent to the popular tourist island of Bali. News outlets said that the Swiss national had begun his hike with a group on July 15. Mustika told Antara that Emmenegger did not fall into a cliff or ravine, and is believed to have slipped while making his way to Lake Segara Anak. Australian news outlet reported that he had slipped and fallen while descending a steep slope on the morning of July 16. It added that Emmenegger was with his daughter and a local porter at the time. He was reportedly given first aid treatment by rescuers before he was evacuated by helicopter later that same day. Trekking company Visit Mount Rinjani said in an Instagram post that Mr Emmenegger was taken to a hospital in Bali for further treatment. In the post, which was accompanied by a video of a rescue helicopter, the company urged hikers to be cautious during trekking activities. 'Always prioritise safety, watch every step, and avoid rushing to prevent accidents,' it said. On June 24, 27-year-old Brazilian Juliana Marins was found dead days after she slipped and fell off a cliff on the side of the volcano during a hike. She was initially located on June 21, but had slipped farther on the sandy terrain of the cliff face. Rescue operations had reportedly been hampered by bad weather in the area. A week later, a Malaysian climber sustained serious injuries after falling from a height of about 200m while heading towards Lake Segara Anak. Malaysian newspaper Sinar Harian reported that the climber's injuries included a fractured hip and head wounds. Indonesian authorities on June 29 announced plans to review hiking procedures and search-and-rescue protocols on Mount Rinjani. West Nusa Tenggara Deputy Governor Indah Dhamayanti Putri was quoted as saying that the provincial government would review regulations related to hiking procedures and permit requirements on Mount Rinjani for both domestic and international visitors. - The Straits Times/ANN

Building manager pleads not guilty to abduction and assault charges

SEREMBAN: A 34-year-old building manager, A. Ramrash, has pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court to charges of abducting an 11-year-old boy and causing hurt to his mother. Ramrash faces an abduction charge for allegedly taking the boy from his 43-year-old father, the boy's legal guardian, along a monsoon drain in Taman Seremban Jaya at around 5.30pm on July 13. He was charged under Section 363 of the Penal Code, which carries a potential jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Fidha Misjedi informed the court that her team was not offering bail for the abduction charge. However, Ramrash's lawyer, Chrysandy Lai from the Legal Aid Department, requested a low bail, citing that the accused was inebriated at the time of the incident. Magistrate Saiful Sayothi set bail at RM6,500 with one surety and scheduled the case for remention on Aug 21. In a separate case, Ramrash also pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to his mother at a house in Taman Seremban Jaya on May 13, around 6.30pm. He allegedly injured his mother by twisting her left leg, causing it to swell. This charge falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 326A, which can lead to a jail term twice as long as the maximum under Section 323. Lai informed the court that the victim had agreed to withdraw her police report against Ramrash. For this charge, Saiful set bail at RM5,000 with one surety and also fixed Aug 21 for remention.
