Bayern Munich 4 Tottenham 0: Thomas Frank's side humiliated by German champions… days before facing PSG in Super Cup
Spurs fans will be fearing the worst ahead of Wednesday's clash with PSG Bayern Munich 4 Tottenham 0: Thomas Frank's side humiliated by German champions… days before facing PSG in Super Cup HARRY KANE came back to haunt Tottenham in his second outing against his old club. But the Spurs icon was left red-faced after ballooning a penalty over the crossbar. And once again it was a friendly, Spurs' final match before next week's Uefa Super Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain, He showed the kind of clinical finishing that helped him become the North Londoners' record goalscorer with 280 strikes with his 12th-minute opener. But soon after, he repeated the terrible spot-kick he struck for his country in the World Cup quarter-final three years ago by firing into Row Z. Advertisement It did not stop Bayern from running riot, though, as they added three stunning further goals from Kingsley Coman, Lennart Karl and Jonah Kusi-Asare. It was a difficult afternoon for Thomas Frank, who was given a painful insight into the quality of opposition his injury-hit side may face in the Champions League this year. Spurs were without first-team starters James Maddison, who will miss the rest of the season with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie and Dominic Solanke. While stalwart Son Heung-min, old mucker of Kane, is no longer at the club following his blockbuster move to LAFC in America. The Portuguese, 30, is short of fitness but was given a thorough work-out in the 45 minutes he played against his parent club, whose attacking players caused Spurs all manner of problems. Advertisement James Maddison could miss 2025-26 season as Tottenham confirm midfielder suffered ACL injury Bayern's two Ballon d'Or nominees, Kane and Michael Olise, combined for the opener in the 12th minute. Olise lofted a ball from deep to Kane, who controlled it beautifully, before clinically firing into the far corner with his weaker left foot. The Three Lions captain had looked a fraction offside in the build-up, but the goal was given anyway. He did not celebrate it, out of respect for his old side. Minutes later, Kane had the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Palhinha had tripped Josip Stanisic in the box, though it was debatable how much contact was made. Advertisement Everyone in the Allianz was expecting the net to bulge and for Kane to have his second against the club that made him. But instead, the 32-year-old slipped in his run-up and skied it well over the crossbar, just like he had in Qatar three years ago. This was obviously a far less serious occasion, though and Kane, along with his Bayern team-mates, quickly shrugged off the gaffe. It was one-way traffic from them on until half-time. Advertisement 6 The embarrassing defeat to Bayern will give Spurs boss Thomas Frank plenty of food for thought before next week's Uefa Super Cup Credit: SHUTTERSTOCK "But remarkably, Bayern did not add to their lead, despite a flurry of chances falling their way. Midfielder Leon Goret2zka was particularly wasteful. Spurs, meanwhile. looked short of creativity without the injured Maddison. Advertisement Frank was already keen to sign a new No.10 before the England star did his ACL against Newcastle. This insipid display only highlighted the need for more help in the transfer market, with Bayern firing home three bangers courtesy of Coman plus teenage subs Karl and Kusi-Asare. Spurs fans will no doubt be fearing the worst when they face PSG, the reigning Champions League winners, in the Super Cup this coming Wednesday.

Ange Postecoglou already lined up for return to club management within days of being sacked by Tottenham
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ANGE POSTECOGLOU has already had interest from other clubs since his ruthless Spurs axing - but may take some time out before getting back into management. The Aussie, 59, was brutally shown the door by Daniel Levy earlier this month, just 16 days since ending Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought with their Europa League triumph. It is thought that the Dane would like to bring star forward Bryan Mbeumo with him to North London. The Cameroonian could cost up to £60million with Manchester United also trying to sign him. Postecoglou, meanwhile, is understood to have been sounded out by clubs in England and on the continent already. READ MORE ON FOOTBALL MIC SWAP Carrick takes up new offer alongside Man Utd icon O'Shea just days after Boro axe But the former Celtic treble-winner, who is enjoying some time with his family, is happy not to rush any decision over his future. That does not rule out a quick return to management, however, should the right opportunity present itself. Postecoglou, who has won trophies in the second season of every post he has had where he has lasted that long in the role, is believed to fancy another crack at the Premier League. Some Spurs fans have been speculating on the curious timing of Postecoglou's sacking. JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS The Aussie was given the boot on June 6, which was exactly two years to the day since Tottenham announced his appointment in 2023. Some had suggested that date might be related to some sort of clause in the deal. Ange Postecoglou's BEST Press Conference Moments Ange Breaks Silence On Tottenham Sacking ANGE Postecoglou issued a statement just moments after being axed. It read: "When I reflect on my time as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, my overriding emotion is one of pride. "The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime. "Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. "That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. "There were many challenges to overcome and plenty of noise that comes with trying to accomplish what many said was not possible. "We have also laid the foundations that means this club should not have to wait 17 more years for their next success. "I have enormous faith in this group of players and know there is much more potential and growth in them. I sincerely want to thank those who are the lifeblood of the club, the supporters. "I know there were some difficult times, but I always felt that they wanted me to succeed and that gave me all the motivation I needed to push on. "It's important to acknowledge the hard working people at Spurs who gave me encouragement on a daily basis. "And finally, I want to thank those who were with me every day for the last two years. "A fantastic group of young men who are now legends of this football club and the brilliant coaches who never once doubted we could do something special. 'We are forever connected. Audere est Facere.' But SunSport understands that was not the case at all and the fact the axe was swung on that date was a complete coincidence. Postecoglou left Spurs having won 47 of his 101 matches in all competitions. However, he did lose a staggering 34 of his 76 Premier League games.

Ange Postecoglou left in dark over Tottenham future and jets off on holiday with no idea whether he still has a job
POST OFFICE Ange Postecoglou left in dark over Tottenham future and jets off on holiday with no idea whether he still has a job Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) ANGE POSTECOGLOU is being made to wait on his Tottenham future with Daniel Levy not expected to make a decision this week. Chairman Levy is still mulling over whether to back or sack the Aussie, who delivered the North Londoners' first trophy in 17 years with last week's Europa League success. No meetings are believed to have been held with the 59-year-old before he left and with a number of other staff also jetting off for some post-season R 'n R, a call on Postecoglou is not anticipated for some time yet. Levy had been of the mind to axe the ex-Celtic chief but the Europa triumph could spark an emotional U-turn. That has been the case for a vast number of supporters who previously wanted a change in the dugout but now are demanding Postecoglou stay after the glory in Bilbao. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL RUN FOR THE HILS Fernandes 'given 72 hours to accept offer' to quit Man Utd for Al-Hilal Former Tottenham centre-back Ramon Vega says it is 'bizarre' Postecoglou's future is even being discussed after ending the club's silverware drought. The Swiss, who won the League Cup with Spurs in 1999, told SunSport: 'The question of whether he deserves to stay on is disrespectful. It would be a huge mistake to sack him. 'We had managers who were names and potentially more expensive than Ange and they won nothing whatsoever. 'I don't know where these guys (the board) are living, in reality, or cuckoo land? CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS 'It's the board's responsibility now (to back him). The club was a laughing stock until last week, let's be honest. 'He's suddenly put Tottenham on the map internationally and finally won a trophy with an unbelievable season with injuries. How Tottenham won the Europa League final v Man United 'He has to stay, that's it. If he's the person who brought a trophy to the club, why is there even a question? Why do we have to wait for yes or no? That's it, continue.' Postecoglou urged Spurs to ensure they keep hold of talismanic defender Cristian Romero in his final press conference of the season on Sunday. Romero was key to Spurs' Europa triumph but has seemed to agitate for a move at times this season, stating publicly his desire to play in La Liga amid interest from Atletico Madrid. Yet the World Cup winner, 27, hinted he could stick around by claiming he had 'no doubt that staying together led us to success. We must continue, this is the path' in a social-media post. Former centre-back Vega, 53, reckons it is essential to keep Romero - and believes retaining Postecoglou could be the key to it. The ex-defender, who played for Spurs between 1996 and 2001, added: 'Absolutely we need to keep hold of Romero. He's top notch. 'If Ange stays, most likely Romero and all these guys will say 'Yes I will stay'. If another person comes in, then Romero might say 'I'm prepared to leave now'. 'Ange can convince them to stay. If you have a manager who is respected from top to bottom within the dressing room, you can achieve anything. 'This is what the board needs to realise. They have a manager that the players believe in going forward.' Meanwhile, James Maddison is targeting a return from his serious knee injury in time for next season's kick-off. The England midfielder, 28, said: 'I'll have to work over the summer and rest and recover. I'll be back hopefully for the start of next season. That's the aim.' Maddison will likely miss much of Spurs' pre-season match schedule, which they announced on Tuesday will include a friendly against Newcastle in South Korea, though the date and venue are yet to be confirmed.
