Video shows suspected drunken driver nearly hit squad car before head-on crash with other motorist
Officials say two people were hospitalized after a suspected drunken driver struck another motorist head-on Thursday near Duluth, Minnesota, just seconds after narrowly hitting a police officer's squad car. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and Northern News Now report it happened at about 4 p.m. on Jean Duluth Road near West Tischler Road. A motorist in a Subaru Outback crossed the center line, almost hit an officer with the Duluth Police Department and then smashed into a Ford Explorer. The DWI suspect and a passenger in the Explorer were both hurt, though the extent of their injuries hasn't been released, according to Northern News Now. "Remember during this long Memorial Day weekend to plan ahead, don't drive under the influence and stay safe," the sheriff's office wrote in a social media post about the crash. The officer captured his near collision on his dash cam, as well as filming the direct aftermath of the crash. The sheriff's office is leading the investigation.

Cabins destroyed as 750-acre wildfire continues to spread
A fast-growing wildfire about 35 miles northeast of Duluth has nearly tripled in size and reportedly destroyed several cabins, authorities said Monday. The Camp House fire began Sunday afternoon near the remote town of Brimson. With abnormally hot, dry and windy conditions persisting in the region, the fire grew to roughly 200 acres Sunday before nearly tripling in size to an estimated 750 acres, which is more than one square mile, by late Monday morning. The fire forced evacuations Sunday and more evacuations could soon be ordered. St. Louis County officials are urging anyone in the area to sign up for emergency alert text messages and be aware of evacuation maps. St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsay told MPR News the blaze may have started with a campfire. However, the cause has not been confirmed as the investigation continues. According to Northern News Now, Ramsay confirmed the fire has destroyed at least three cabins and one garage. No injuries have been reported as of early Monday afternoon. Officials have named the fire after the camp and retreat center in Brimson operated by Green Lake Lutheran Ministries. "As crews continue to respond to the wildfire near our Camp House site in Brimson, Minnesota, our prayers are with the firefighters, first responders, and neighbors affected by the fire," the organization shared Monday. "While no one is currently on site, we remain mindful of the impact on the surrounding community." Anthony Coughlin, the owner of a local dog sledding business called Endurance Kennels LLC, wrote on GoFundMe that one dog born at the business' kennel in 2022 died early Monday morning "due to the immediate evacuation and stress of the Camp House Fire." In a Facebook post, the business said heat exhaustion caused by the weather and the stress of the evacuation led to the dog's death at the emergency vet in Duluth. The page is raising support for the dog's owner, Soph Mintz, as she temporarily relocates with her 25 sled dogs and four cats to her parents' cabin in Finland. Sen. Grant Hauschild, DFL-Hermantown, in a Facebook post thanked fire crews for their efforts in battling the fast-moving wildfire. "But here's the reality: recent federal cuts have made wildfire response even harder," he wrote. "The Forest Service has been hit with layoffs, and key prevention efforts have been frozen. That means fewer people and fewer resources on the ground when these disasters strike." Hauschild continued: "This should be a wake-up call. We need to fully fund wildfire prevention and response—before more communities are put at risk. Stay as safe out there, and thank you to all the first responders on the front lines." Record-breaking heat, low humidity and gusty winds have produced dangerous fire conditions across most of Minnesota. As of Monday, red flag warnings are in effect in 80 of the 87 counties. For crews battling the Camp House Fire, cooler conditions and potential rain are not expected until Wednesday.

Couple Marries in Hospital ICU After Pregnant Bride Is Taken Off Ventilator
A pregnant Minnesota woman was taken to the hospital just two weeks before her wedding date Although she was intubated and briefly took a turn for the worse, experiencing septic shock and pneumonia, her nurses helped her keep her original wedding date by throwing a ceremony in the hospital room 'This might top the list for the happiest things I've seen at work,' a nurse said One young couple got serious about their relationship "in sickness and in health" when they decided to tie the knot in a Minnesota intensive care unit. According to a GoFundMe page organized on the couple's behalf, 23-year-old Ariana Sleen, who is pregnant with her first child, was rushed to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Minn., with severe back pain on March 31 — just two weeks before she was set to tie the knot with her now-husband, Chandler Sleen. According to the hospital, Ariana quickly took a turn for the worse and was diagnosed with pneumonia. She then went into septic shock and had to be placed on a ventilator. 'I just remember being rushed from room to room and I was just like, 'I have no idea what's going on,' and then just flashes of waking up and a bunch of people surrounding me,' Ariana recalled to local outlet Northern News Now. Her condition remained poor for several days, per the GoFundMe, as she battled a severe urinary tract infection, a kidney infection with abscesses and a serious lung infection. But according to Ariana, Chandler never left her side. 'She had very bad pneumonia, went into septic shock, and that's when they had to put the tube in,' Chandler told the outlet, opening up about his fiancée being placed on a ventilator. 'I was definitely very terrified,' the dad-to-be added. 'I mean, these are the two most important people in my life right here and they were both struggling.' Despite the health scare, the hospital reported that Ariana began to improve and was taken off the breathing machine, just one day before the couple was originally set to tie the knot. 'I was able to start standing the day after,' Ariana told Northern News Now. 'He picked it down to the exact date. That's like another reason where I was like, 'We have to go through with it,' because it was just like God's divine intervention.' "All the nurses and everybody came together and put us in what's known as the 'Taylor Swift Suite,' " Ariana recalled, per Essentia Health, "and we got married." Three of Ariana's intensive care nurses — Madeline Vogel, Olivia Schmid and Deanna Anderson — opened up about wanting to help the couple as much as they could. 'I just tried to clean up the room a little, make room for a wedding cake and food and got some carts and threw a sheet over it as a tablecloth,' Anderson told Northern News Now. 'We had to get creative,' Vogel added. After the nurses tidied up Ariana's room and helped her into her wedding gown, she and Chandler said "I do" right there in the hospital bed. Sordid New Twist in ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome' State Senator Case After Teen Sex Sting
Former Republican Minnesota state Sen. Justin Eichorn's wife has filed for divorce on the day new charges were filed against him following his arrest as part of an underage sex sting, according to reports. Brittany Eichorn filed a petition for dissolution of marriage in Itasca County Court Monday, Northern News Now reported. Brittany, 40, and Justin Eichorn, one of the legislators who proposed a law to classify 'Trump Derangement Syndrome' as a mental illness, share four children together. Eichorn was to be allowed conditional release, but that has since been revoked after investigators say the 40-year-old organized with a woman from Grand Rapids to retrieve items, including a computer, from an apartment he used when he was away from home working in the state capital of Minnesota, St. Paul. He did this despite reportedly being made aware that his calls from jail would be recorded and monitored. 'Eichorn's conduct evidences a willingness to conceal material facts from the Court and to do so at the expense of public safety,' prosecutors said, according to the Daily Mail. The alleged ploy failed, however, as FBI investigators had already secured the apartment. They reportedly found cash, a handgun and ammunition and an iPhone that had been wiped to factory settings, among other items including memory cards. The former lawmaker resigned last Thursday after he was caught up in an operation targeting the procurement of commercial sex involving juveniles. He was snared by cops in Bloomington on March 17 after allegedly thinking he was meeting up with a 17-year-old girl he was messaging, which turned out to be an undercover officer. The police seized a condom, two cellphones, and $129 in cash. The politician was reportedly arrested outside his vehicle moments before he was due to meet the fictional girl. Bloomington Police Department Chief Booker T Hodges on Monday offered more details in a press conference. 'The decoy had told him that they live with their aunt and that their aunt was gone until next week. And then Justin had asked if he could have sex in his car,' he said. Prosecutors also argued that he should remain behind bars because his messages to the fake girl detailed 'clear familiarity with soliciting commercial sex from minors.' 'Eichorn's messages and conduct reveal an experienced operator,' prosecutors argued in their application to keep him jailed for the time being. 'His pretrial release brings with it a real risk that he would attempt to victimize other minors in the community.' Eichorn is scheduled appear again before a judge in a pre-trial hearing on March 26. Attempted coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in prostitution is a felony that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years.
