Warner Bros. Discovery splits: Cable, streaming services to be divided; decision to be finalised by 2026

Warner Bros. Discovery, the powerhouse behind HBO, CNN, and a vast entertainment empire, has announced splitting into two separate public companies by mid-2025, carving a clear divide between its traditional cable networks and its streaming and studio divisions. The restructuring will create two distinct entities: Streaming & Studios and Global Networks. The Streaming & Studios will house Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, and their extensive film and television libraries. Global Networks will comprise CNN, TNT Sports in the US, Discovery Channel, a range of major free-to-air European broadcasters, and digital brands such as Discovery+ and Bleacher Report. Following the announcement on Monday, shares of Warner Bros. Discovery surged more than 9% in pre-market trading. Warner Bros. chief executive David Zaslav will be leading the Streaming & Studios company, while the firm's current chief financial officer, Gunnar Wiedenfels, will take the reins at Global Networks. Both officials will continue in their present roles until the split is finalised. 'By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape," Zaslav said in a statement, quoted by AP. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo 'This evolution isn't a departure from our strategy — to deploy Max globally, optimize our global networks and return our Studios to industry leadership — it's about unlocking the full potential of two strong businesses,' Zaslav said in an internal memo, cited by CNN. 'Each has a distinct focus, a clear mission, and the scale to succeed on its own terms.' The decision to break up Warner Bros. Discovery comes just three years after the much-celebrated merger of Discovery and the former Time Warner. The announcement was widely anticipated, as the company has spent the past six months reshaping itself in preparation for a split. The company said the separation is expected to be completed by the middle of next year, after receiving approval from the Warner Bros. Discovery board. Why Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first in high-stakes IPL Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians

MI captain Hardik Pandya and PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer at the toss. (Video grab) With a spot in the IPL 2025 final on the line, Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer made a bold call at the toss in Qualifier 2, opting to bowl first against five-time champions Mumbai Indians at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. Facing a do-or-die clash for a place in Tuesday's summit showdown against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Shreyas explained his reasoning for putting MI in to bat first. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'We are going to bowl first. Slightly overcast and the wicket was under the covers as well,' Iyer said. 'It's a fresh game, our mindset is to go out and win. The environment is top-notch. Yuzi comes in.' Who's that IPL player? The decision aligns with the conditions in Ahmedabad, where Pitch No. 7 — known for its even pace and flat surface — was used for the all-important game. Murali Kartik and Michael Clarke, analysing the strip before the toss, predicted a run-fest, calling it a 'batter's paradise' where 200-plus totals are par. Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya echoed Iyer's view, admitting he would have bowled first as well. 'We also would have bowled first. We need to bat well and assess the conditions. It has got flatter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo If you bowl well, you'll get some help,' said Pandya. 'We came very early morning after the last game, and most of the guys focussed on recovery. Topley comes in for Gleeson, who has a niggle.' Both captains clearly anticipated that chasing under lights might offer an advantage, especially with the venue's dew factor in mind. With Ahmedabad offering true bounce and short square boundaries (61m and 67m), the match promised high-octane entertainment.
