Man self-immolates outside police stn in Jaipur over financial dispute

Jaipur: A 50-year-old man attempted self-immolation outside the Transport Nagar police station Monday, allegedly over a financial dispute with his business partner. The man, identified as Rajesh Sharma , suffered 50% burns and is undergoing treatment in the burn ward of SMS Hospital. According to police, the incident took place around 8 a.m. when Sharma poured petrol on himself and set himself ablaze approximately 10 metres from the police station. Station staff quickly intervened, covering him with blankets and rushing him to the hospital for immediate medical care. A resident of Radhika Vihar Colony, Sharma had reportedly borrowed Rs 1.5 crore from a business partner, identified as Kailash Maheshwari, and invested the funds in various projects. SHO (Transport Nagar) Arun Kumar said that Maheshwari had been demanding his dues for the past three months, which Sharma allegedly failed to repay. Police added that Sharma had filed a formal complaint at the station alleging that Maheshwari was pressuring him over the pending payments. Sharma's family, on the other hand, alleged that Maheshwari had deceived him by taking a share in a piece of land Rajesh had purchased. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo On June 28, Maheshwari allegedly went to Sharma's house. When he didn't find him there, he called him on his mobile. In front of his children and wife, Maheshwari allegedly abused Sharma over the phone and threatened him to repay the interest. A report was filed at the Transport Nagar police station. However, the family claimed that despite filing the report, it was treated merely as a complaint, and no concrete action was taken. On Monday morning, Rajesh Sharma again visited the police station. When he did not receive a satisfactory response, he set himself ablaze outside the police station. Police, however, said that the entire case is being probed.

Alex Formenton, once a promising NHL player, faces trial for alleged involvement in the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault case (Getty Images) Once viewed as one of the Ottawa Senators' most promising young forwards, Alex Formenton has found himself at the center of one of Canadian hockey's most disturbing scandals. Now 25, the former NHL player is currently standing trial for his alleged role in the 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault case, a saga that has shaken the foundations of the sport across the country. Alex Formenton 's rise through the ranks and unexpected career halt Born in King, Ontario, Alex Formenton was drafted 47th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2017. Known for his speed and versatility on the left wing, he earned early praise for his potential and work ethic. He played parts of three seasons with the Senators and was considered a valuable penalty killer and depth scorer, notching 18 goals in the 2021–22 season. — AmazingZoltan (@AmazingZoltan) However, his promising career came to a screeching halt when contract negotiations with Ottawa stalled amid rising speculation about his involvement in the alleged 2018 group sexual assault involving members of Canada's World Junior team. As a restricted free agent, Formenton was left unsigned and later moved overseas to play for HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland. In 2025, he stepped away from professional hockey entirely and began working in construction in his hometown. Legal charges tied to 2018 Team Canada incident The turning point came on January 28, 2024, when Formenton turned himself in to London police. He was officially charged with one count of sexual assault related to an incident that allegedly took place in June 2018, shortly after Team Canada's World Junior Championship victory. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo 'Formenton had 'moved on from a hockey career,'' read court documents filed in August 2024. CM: Govt settled site debate by setting up 3 nat'l law univs

Nagpur: CM Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said the Maharashtra govt under him took the historic decision of setting up three national law universities (NLUs)—at Mumbai, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—to settle the debate over its location nearly a decade ago. He pointed out that no state in the country has such an arrangement, Fadnavis highlighted the role played by then CJI Sharad Bobde as well as CJI Bhushan Gavai, then with the Nagpur bench of Bombay HC, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and himself in chalking out a plan for bringing Maharashtra NLU to Nagpur. In a lighter vein, Fadnavis said he witnessed the growth of MNLU in different capacities—as CM, leader of opposition, deputy CM and then CM again. Fadnavis said it is equipped with all facilities for quality education. "The surrounding environment enhances the natural beauty of the campus. Funds have been allocated for the university in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and land has been selected for the Mumbai campus. In the coming years, all three universities will operate at full capacity," he said at the inauguration of the new administrative block of MNLU in Nagpur on Sunday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo "Students [from the three universities] should achieve success on a global stage. Three significant pre-Independence laws have been amended; not merely renamed but Indianised. These changes will enable the use of new technology, speed up judicial processes and increase conviction rates," said Fadnavis. As India becomes the world's fourth largest economy, the CM said, swift resolution of commercial and investment-related cases is essential to attract investment. "India's Constitution is the finest, establishing an ideal as a sustainable value. To face the challenges of a changing world, students have no better platform than this university. Challenges like cybercrime and cyber breaches exist, but artificial intelligence offers opportunities. Students must take responsibility for bringing positive changes to the legal field through technology." Putting the onus on teachers, he said the university should now provide education in innovation, creativity and modern processes, alongside academics. "Govt will fully support all initiatives to make this university the best and self-sufficient." Acknowledging Fadnavis's efforts in establishing the university and its modern facilities, Union minister Gadkari said this will lead to the institution's qualitative growth. "Updating knowledge is crucial, and this university will set an excellent example. Knowledge is a great power that must be transformed into wealth. By leveraging modern technologies like digital advancements, the university should achieve commendable performance globally," he said. Gadkari praised the institution's innovative policy and design, highlighting its vision and the potential of its bright, upcoming students.

Maharashtra school education department pushes FYJC admission list to June 30, blames ‘technical snags'

Mumbai: The school education department failed to declare the first-year junior college admissions list on Thursday, as it was entangled in what it called "technical snags". The uncertainty will now drag on till June 30, yet another fresh date given by the education department to release the first list. Across Maharashtra, 12.7 lakh students and parents waited through the evening, refreshing screens and hoping the seat allotment information would finally blink into existence. "I've been hitting refresh on the FYJC admission portal like a ritual all evening. Each time, hoping the list will appear. There's already enough stress — of cut-offs and competition. And now, this wait only makes the anxiety louder," said Charmi Jhaveri, an FYJC aspirant who scored 92% in her class 10 examinations. Around 10pm, the new FYJC admission schedule was finally declared (see box). You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai Earlier in the evening, Mahesh Palkar, the state's Director of Education (Secondary), said: "We were processing the data. But the cut-off scores of colleges were not getting displayed. We are working hard to fix this issue. If resolved, we will declare the list or we will finally declare it on Monday." SSC exams were held early this year, and the results came sooner than expected — on May 13. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo But for lakhs of Class 10 students in Maharashtra, that head start dissolved into a slow wait with govt first trying new centralised admission systems and then wanting to impose new reservations in minority institutes. Last year, SSC results were announced on May 27, and the first FYJC list was released on June 27. What could have been a smooth and fast transition to college turned jagged, said principals. Thrice earlier, dates were announced to declare the FYJC seat allotment list, but state failed to release the same.

147kg stale food destroyed in checks at city eateries in 20 days

Bhubaneswar: The food safety wing of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has destroyed 147 kg of stale, unhygienic food during surprise checks conducted at food stalls across the city in the past 20 days, officials said. The raid, carried out jointly by food safety squads and BMC's SHINE (Sanitation and Hygiene Inspection for Neat Environment) team, resulted in the civic body collecting a total penalty amount of Rs 1.31 lakh from vendors who violated food safety norms. The ongoing drive is being conducted in response to jaundice and diarrhoea cases reported in the city. On June 16, fines amounting to Rs 12,500 were collected from five establishments, with three hotels receiving closure notices. On June 17, fines totalling Rs 30,000 were collected. Raids were conducted at Palasuni, Pandra, Gadakana, Patia, KIIT Square, Fire Station, Ganganagar and SUM Hospital on both days. "As many as 163 inspections have been conducted at these places. The raids continued until Monday. The highest amount of 50 kg of stale food was destroyed on June 21 at Chandrasekharpur, BDA area. The raids will continue to keep people safe and generate awareness," said BMC commissioner Rajesh Patil. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuova CUPRA Formentor e-HYBRID CUPRA Configura Auto Undo BMC officials said on June 18, raids were conducted in Aerodrome area and Soubhagyanagar, leading to the collection of Rs 57 lakh in fines. "So far, one water pouch manufacturing unit and three hotels have been sealed. Between June 1 and 13, 144 food samples were collected for laboratory testing, while between June 14 and 23, 49 samples were collected," a BMC official said. Designated officer (food safety), Satyajit Patel, said vendors were also warned not to serve stale food. "If the hotels repeat the practice of serving stale food, they will be slapped with closure notices along with penalties," he said. Food safety squads said fast food items and some local and popular delicacies are mostly dumped at the source itself. "Some well-established hotels are also storing stale food. So far, bacterial contamination has been detected in food samples. Now, we will randomly check panipuri (gupchup) and dahi bara-aludam stalls to see if the water they use is contaminated," Patel added. Laboratory tests can also ascertain if any colour or preservatives that are not permissible are used in food.
