Baltimore Orioles Struggle to Find Footing in MLB Power Rankings

Baltimore Orioles Struggle to Find Footing in MLB Power Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's no getting around it: The Baltimore Orioles have been a bad baseball team so far in this MLB season. They have not found solid starting pitching and their reliable young players are slumping. Advertisement While the Orioles have shown a little improvement lately, they remain stuck in the back of the pack in the American League East. Their performance also has them in the No. 24 spot in the latest MLB Power Rankings from The Athletic. Look at the team as a whole, there haven't been too many bright spots. One of them, though, has been designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn. Orioles DH Ryan O'Hearn has been a bright spot for Baltimore He's one of the top DHs in the AL at this time. O'Hearn is hitting .328 with nine home runs and 23 RBI. He's got a .525 slugging percentage, which means O'Hearn is making solid contact. If the Orioles had a chance to put one of their players on this season's All-Star team, then O'Hearn would be a fitting candidate. It's also noteworthy to see if second baseman Jackson Holliday can also get in on the summertime fun, too. Advertisement Holliday had a pretty solid May, but the trick is repeating that in June and all summer long. Orioles fans know all about the team's pitching situation. It's not good. This needs to be addressed for any real marked improvement record-wise going forward. At least Baltimore can take comfort in the fact that they've played better than the Colorado Rockies. There needs to be some serious front office conversations on getting Baltimore back in the AL East playoff picture. Should O'Hearn and Holliday become the backbone of an Orioles' rally this season, Baltimore might just surge back into the postseason conversation. Advertisement A lot of work, though, remains to be done. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 5, 2025, where it first appeared.

Ryan O'Hearn feeling optimistic with Orioles getting key players back from injury

The post Ryan O'Hearn feeling optimistic with Orioles getting key players back from injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Baltimore Orioles are a team going through a lot of struggles. Baltimore is last in the American League East and banged up to boot. Orioles slugger Ryan O'Hearn though is trying to look on the bright side when it comes to injuries. Advertisement 'It seems like we've been dealing with that for a while now going back to last year,' O'Hearn said, per MASN Sports. 'We're going to keep rocking. We've got guys coming back. 'Looking forward to [Colton] Cowser and [Jordan] Westburg coming back, I know they're on rehab assignments right now, and they're going to plug right in and, hopefully, be ready to roll, and they're going to be huge for us.' Jordan Westburg and Colton Cowser are both offensive threats for Baltimore. Orioles fans are anxious to see both of them back in the lineup. 'Westburg's the glue to this whole thing,' interim manager Tony Mansolino said, per 'I think we saw last year, right, with kind of how things went in August and September without Westy. We're excited to get him going here at some point.' Advertisement It's been tough sledding for the Orioles, who are just 20-36 on the year. Orioles are searching for answers this season There has not been much to celebrate this year in Baltimore. The club's rough start resulted in the team parting ways with manager Brandon Hyde. Mansolino is the club's interim manager. Things are no easier for Mansolino than they were for Hyde. Baltimore has 11 guys currently on the injured list, per MASN. If the team is able to get some of their sluggers back, that could lead to a turnaround. Baltimore's latest loss is Cedric Mullins, who was placed on the IL on Friday. He is leading the club this season in home runs with 10 on the year. Advertisement The losses mean the Orioles will need to rely even more on O'Hearn. Baltimore's outfielder/first baseman is hitting .335 on the season with 21 runs batted in. The Orioles play the lowly Chicago White Sox on Saturday.

The early season struggles for the Baltimore Orioles were a bit unexpected to most and put a quick halt to Baltimore's plans to stay atop the AL East for years to come. Because of that, the Orioles will more than likely be sellers at this year's trade deadline and according to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, first baseman Ryan O'Hearn is among one of the trade candidates in Baltimore. BOSTON, MA - MAY 25: Pitcher Zack Kelly #76 of the Boston Red Sox looks on as Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles smiles as he heads for home after his double and two... BOSTON, MA - MAY 25: Pitcher Zack Kelly #76 of the Boston Red Sox looks on as Ryan O'Hearn #32 of the Baltimore Orioles smiles as he heads for home after his double and two errors allowed him to score during the eighth inning at Fenway Park on May 25, 2025 in Boston, Massachusetts. More"Though he has served as designated hitter more than anything else this season, O'Hearn is more than capable of playing first base or right field," Miller wrote. "He even occasionally sets up shop out in left field. And that means with very few exceptions, every tentative buyer has a weak point in its lineup that could be filled by O'Hearn." He is in the middle of a career season, with a .338 batting average, nine home runs, 21 RBI and a .977 OPS. It is an unexpected breakout year for the 31-year-old, and it has put him at the forefront of trade conversations. If the Orioles decide to move him, here are three potential landing spots. Detroit Tigers Detroit has picked up right where it left off last season and has jumped out to a six-game division lead. The Tigers have a perfect combination of timely pitching, timely hitting and lockdown relief pitching. O'Hearn's ability to play a multitude of positions makes him a perfect fit in a Detroit lineup that manager AJ Hinch loves to mix and match depending on the pitching matchups. He would an excellent addition to a Tigers team that looks like it is headed back to the postseason for the second consecutive year. Boston Red Sox Boston will need to play better down the stretch to find itself in any sort of position to acquire players at the trade deadline and if it is able to do that, O'Hearn would be a nice fit. The Red Sox rank 27th in Wins Above Average from first basemen this season and O'Hearn's gaudy numbers this season would help that tremendously. Boston would likely have to give up a little more than other teams since it is division rivals with the Orioles. It would be well worth it if O'Hearn stays hot and gets the Red Sox back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021. San Francisco Giants Another team that is near the bottom of the Wins Above Average list at first base, the Giants rank 25th at -1.3 for the season. LaMonte Wade's .171 average with one home run is not going to cut it much longer and San Francisco may make a move sooner rather than later to help itself stay in the hunt for a NL West title. Replacing the struggling Wade with the scorching hot O'Hearn could provide not only an instant spark, but constant production in the Giants lineup for the remainder of the season. Ryan O'Hearn powers Orioles over Red Sox with wild 2-run Little League home run

The Baltimore Orioles might be one of the worst teams in MLB right now. But on Sunday, it was the Boston Red Sox who were doomed by a comedy of errors. In the final game of a four-game series, the Orioles beat the Red Sox 5-1 in Boston on Sunday. Baltimore sealed the game with a wild two-run Little League home run from designated hitter Ryan O'Hearn in the eighth inning. Things went about as bad as they could have for Boston on this play: O'Hearn's hit went deep into right-center, where a miscommunication between Red Sox outfielders Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela led to an awkward attempt to get the ball into the infield. Rafaela eventually tossed the ball toward infielder Marcelo Mayer — who just got called up to the majors on Saturday to replace the injured Alex Bregman. But Rafaela's throw badly overshot Mayer's glove and actually hit O'Hearn as he safely stood on second base. From there, Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson ran in for a score while O'Hearn sprinted to third. Mayer did his best to follow, but his ball went way wide of third baseman Nick Sogard; as a result, O'Hearn slid into third and kept running to home plate for the score. Just how we drew it up 👍 — Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) May 25, 2025 O'Hearn's unconventional two-run homer brought the Orioles' lead to 5-0. The Red Sox eventually scored in the bottom of the ninth, bringing the final score to 5-1. The loss sealed a 2-2 series split for Boston against the worst team in the AL East. Sunday's loss felt like the latest in a series of embarrassments for the Red Sox. Starting pitcher Walker Buehler returned to the mound Sunday, days after being ejected alongside Boston manager Alex Cora for yelling at an umpire. Buehler allowed four hits and two runs in five innings. The call-up of Mayer has also had some mixed results. The young infielder scored Boston's only run off an Abraham Toro RBI single, but he was also a key part of the disastrous eighth inning. O'Hearn had a great game overall, hitting a solo homer in the sixth inning — to nearly the exact same spot in the outfield. Boy O'Boy — Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) May 25, 2025 With the win Sunday and a 2-1 win over the Red Sox on Saturday, the Orioles move to 18-34 on the season — leaving plenty of room for improvement. But at least Baltimore has a great highlight clip.

Ryan O'Hearn, Dylan Carlson homer as Orioles beat Red Sox 5-1 to salvage series split

BOSTON (AP) — Ryan O'Hearn and Dylan Carlson each hit a solo homer and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 on Sunday to salvage a split of the four-game series that was interrupted by two rainouts. The victory gave Baltimore its first consecutive wins since April 30 and May 2 after it earned a split of the day-night doubleheader Saturday by winning the second game. Jarren Duran had four singles for the Red Sox and highly touted prospect Marcelo Mayer earned his first major league hit — a single — and added a double. It was the second straight game that Boston's offense has struggled after it learned Alex Bregman, one of its better offensive players, was lost for a while with a strained right quadriceps. The Orioles won for just the third time in 13 games. Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman left the game after taking a hard foul off the mask. Orioles starter Dean Kremer (4-5) allowed seven singles in 5 1/3 innings. Carlson hit his first homer with the Orioles into the right-field seats to make it 2-0. Key moment O'Hearn had somewhat of a Little League homer when he doubled to the gap in right-center in the eighth. He stopped at second, but the throw from Ceddanne Rafaela hit him and caromed away, allowing him to break for third. Mayer retrieved the ball and threw it away, allowing O'Hearn to score. Key stat The Red Sox finished a 10-game homestand just 5-5. Up next Orioles: RHP Charlie Morton (0-7, 7.68 ERA) is scheduled to start for Baltimore on Monday in the opener of a three-game series against St. Louis. RHP Erick Fedde (3-3, 3.77) is scheduled for the Cardinals.
