Springfield standouts swim back to State Meet

SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Springfield High School will be well-represented with two relays and two individual qualifiers in multiple events at the OHSAA Swimming State Tournament at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Sophomore Paige McCombs will participate in the girls' 100-yard Butterfly and 100-yard Breaststroke while classmate Tres Hivley qualified for the girls' 500-yard and 100-yard Backstroke. 'I am so ecstatic to be with my teammates this year and to able to make both relays qualifying for state this year,' Hivley said. 'There is going to be so much energy on the pool deck and I cannot explain how excited I am for this opportunity to swim again.' As a relay team, McCombs and Hivley will be joined by Kalli Pellice and Blythe Hively in the girls' 200-yard Medley Relay and 400-yard Freestyle Relay. 'It's really exciting to have the relays going together and like having all of us get to swim there together,' McCombs said. 'We're really excited for the relay and like what we get to do at states and how we're also working together.' Both Hivley and McCombs qualified for the state tournament as a freshman a year ago and raced during the Friday finals. The State Championship event started on Tuesday with diving events and will run through Saturday, Feb. 22 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Columbiana seniors set to cap off careers at State Swim

SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Columbiana High School is sending two athletes who will look to finish their careers on a high note at the OHSAA Swimming State Tournament at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Seniors Preston Buckingham on the boys' side and Elena Mackall on the girls' side each qualified for the state swim meet. For Buckingham, it's his fourth consecutive trip to state in Canton as he will participate in the Boys 100-Yard Breaststroke and 200-yard IM. 'I'm stoked, I'm so excited, I've worked so hard for this. Four-for-four is an amazing achievement,' Buckingham said. 'But this year it's really looking bright for me and I'm excited to hit the water and get going.' For Mackall, she qualified for the Girls 100-Yard Backstroke and is ready to take in all the sights and sounds of the greatest stage in all of high school swimming in Ohio. 'I've been in the stands before just watching in the atmosphere is incredible,' Mackall said. 'So to be on deck and to actually be a part of that is it's going to be a moment that I'm going to remember for the rest of my life, and I'm really looking forward to it.'
