Springfield standouts swim back to State Meet
SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – Springfield High School will be well-represented with two relays and two individual qualifiers in multiple events at the OHSAA Swimming State Tournament at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
Sophomore Paige McCombs will participate in the girls' 100-yard Butterfly and 100-yard Breaststroke while classmate Tres Hivley qualified for the girls' 500-yard and 100-yard Backstroke.
'I am so ecstatic to be with my teammates this year and to able to make both relays qualifying for state this year,' Hivley said. 'There is going to be so much energy on the pool deck and I cannot explain how excited I am for this opportunity to swim again.'
As a relay team, McCombs and Hivley will be joined by Kalli Pellice and Blythe Hively in the girls' 200-yard Medley Relay and 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
'It's really exciting to have the relays going together and like having all of us get to swim there together,' McCombs said. 'We're really excited for the relay and like what we get to do at states and how we're also working together.'
Both Hivley and McCombs qualified for the state tournament as a freshman a year ago and raced during the Friday finals.
The State Championship event started on Tuesday with diving events and will run through Saturday, Feb. 22 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Tonya Peck steps down as Fair Grove volleyball head coach
FAIR GROVE–After winning back-to-back state championships the past two seasons, Tonya Peck is stepping down as the head coach of the Fair Grove volleyball team. Peck spent 24-years at the helm, and amassed an impressive record of 611-177-53. Her resume also includes 10 Class 2 District championships, four Final Four appearances, and leading Fair Grove to the Class 2 State Championship the past two seasons. Dani Kepler will take over as the new leader of the Lady Eagles. She played under Peck, graduating in 2012, and played at Evangel, as well. Mets drops their sixth-straight game
Moosic, P.A. (WSYR) — The Syracuse Mets continue to struggle on the road. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped out to big lead early and the Mets never really threatened in losing their sixth consecutive game, 10-3. The RailRiders scored one run in the first and seven more in the second to open up an 8-0 lead after two innings. Syracuse got on the board in the fourth inning when Gilberto Celestino scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-1. the Mets got as close as 8-3 before the home team tacked on a couple of more insurance runs for the final margin.
