Livingston Parish students recognized for integrity and honesty
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Four Livingston Parish high school students were awarded for their good behavior as they serve as role models on their campuses. Albany High School students Jonah Grob and Abigail McAlister and Springfield High School students Logan Milton and Olivia Arne, all juniors, were recognized for their honesty and integrity by the Albany Masonic Lodge #466. 'These students were selected by their school administrators and faculty – people who witness their behavior every day. These school leaders made the selection we have before us,' Masonic Lodge Leader Ronald Stilley said. 'I think it says a lot about a student's character when the school leaders who are with them every day can confidently pick them from the crowd.' The Grand Lodge of Louisiana started the Honesty and Integrity award in 1977 to highlight students who have the qualities to become future leaders. Carnival organizer hopes Springfield event will be day of fun, family and community
Can a single community event spark togetherness, stir up the embers of old memories and ignite a new enthusiasm for Springfield Township and Lakemore residents and schools? That's a lot to ask, but organizer Tia Lentini hopes the April 26 event with the really long name of "Experience Springfield Township Carnival & Community Expo" will do just that. Lentini, who is promoting the upcoming carnival, has gathered some 40 businesses and groups to sponsor the event at Springfield High School on Canton Road. The Mindy Covington Agency in Uniontown, one of those 40, jumped at the chance to sponsor the event. "Within 30 seconds, I said, 'Absolutely, I will support this,'" Covington said April 18. "… I think it's a great opportunity to show the community I support them." Covington said she plans to be a part of the carnival on an annual basis, and says the theme of the carnival is in sync with her views. "Community, to me, is truly at the heart of everything I choose to do," she said. Lentini said she fondly remembers such events, which have become less common in the township once known as a fun hot spot for Greater Akron. Throughout the early 1900s, Springfield Lake Park was a popular amusement park, featuring a roller coaster that extended out over the lake. "Feedback from the community has been super positive," Lentini said. "They remember how much fun they had at their school carnivals." The 3 to 6 p.m. event will be indoors, with a variety of food trucks in the triangle area of the school grounds, Lentini said. Entertainment includes a 5 p.m. performance of Major Scales, an Akron-based act that performs circus-type acts like juggling and stilt walking, and a cake walk with cakes from around the area. What is a cake walk? Think musical chairs with a cake as the prize. The event comes a little more than a week before the May 6 election, in which Springfield Local Schools has two levies on the ballot that narrowly failed in the November election. Lentini hopes the carnival will stimulate conversation among attendees about the role schools play in the Springfield-Lakemore community. "(We want to) foster that connection," she said. "If you don't have a sense of community, you struggle. Sense of community is very important." Local school theatre club joins awards showcase
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Springfield High School's theatre club is joining a local theater showcase. According to a press release, the club has joined the Miami Valley High School Theater Awards (MVHSTA) program, representing the district for the very first time. The 'Wildcat Theatre' cast and crew will perform 'The Addams Family,' from Apr. 24 to 26, which the MVHSTA will judge ahead of their award show in June. The program is expected to give out over 600 awards at the 2025 awards and showcase event on June 5. They will announce the winners in May out of a total pool of 39 high schools throughout the Miami Valley, including Butler High School, Chaminade Julienne High School, Stivers School for the Arts and more. The program has celebrated high school plays, musicals, students and educators in the area since 2018. During the awards show, winning schools are invited to perform songs from productions they produce. The 2025 awards will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Schuster Center. Each year, we've welcomed both theatre veterans and new performers. Thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of our students, this year we produced a theatre season that is ready for competition! Our students are so excited to participate in the wider theatre community of Miami Valley schools through our musical, The Addams Family. This is just one step in the continued growth of our program that will hopefully include more shows, more community outreach, and more student-led projects.
