Wife, tattoo studio in Oak Grove mourn loss after motorcycle crash
OAK GROVE, Mo. — A motorcyclist died earlier this week from injuries in a crash on U.S. 24 highway in Lafayette County. The family of the motorcyclist who was killed confirmed that the victim is Chris Melchert, a tattooist from Bates City. Eight-car crash reported on I-635, two hurt, Kansas Highway Patrol says His wife, still grieving his loss, is using the crash to remind everyone to be safe around motorcycles. On Saturday, FOX4 stopped by his shop, the Purgatory Tattoo Studio in Oak Grove, where the community is still remembering their friend and husband. 'Legendary, epic,' Meg Melchert said as she described her husband, Chris. 'I said earlier that he's everyone's best friend and he really was everyone's best friend to them in some way. The world will never have someone in it again like him. He was epic.' The Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to a crash involving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on June 2. According to the highway patrol's crash log, the motorcyclist was headed west on U.S. 24 when a Ford F-250 tried to cross the highway. The truck hit the Harley-Davidson, and the motorcyclist died from the injuries June 3. Meg confirmed to FOX4 that Chris was the motorcyclist. 'How I am feeling is guttural,' she said. 'I mean, it is stressing me to my core and I never knew that a living person could feel this pain and not die themselves.' Chris's station at Purgatory Tattoo is now filled with flowers and cards, teddy bears and notes from friends and family. The shop became a community, rather than just a place for tattoos and piercings. 'It's a culture here,' Meg said. 'And when I say we always joke and we call it a 'framily' — friends that have turned into family — and it's true.' She noted that Purgatory Tattoo had different hours than most tattoo shops so the artists could spend time with their children and family. Being open early in the morning, as early as 6:30 a.m., helped Chris create that 'framily.' 'This was a place for people to come and converse and people just come hang out,' Meg said. 'Sometimes nothing was said. They were just here. Your laborers to your factory workers, your police, your firemen, doctors, our tow truck drivers. You know, our 5 a.m. was their 5 p.m. So, we captured all those morning people.' Meg said her husband's death should serve as a reminder for everyone to look twice for motorcyclists. 'My husband was doing everything right,' she said. 'He was wearing bright colors. He had a helmet on. He had boots on, he had jeans on, he had a headlight on. He was going the speed limit and someone just blew through a stop sign for whatever reason.' She said that extra caution around motorcycles could be the difference in someone's life. 'Fifteen seconds of that guy waiting would've changed my husband's life. Fifteen seconds of a stop. Motorcycles can't stop as fast as cars can, and they don't have airbags. And give space for riders. And if you think you can beat them across the road, just don't, just wait. Just wait. Give them a minute,' Meg said. Meg and her family are inviting everyone who has a tattoo by Chris to join them at his celebration of life on June 29 at the Fieldhouse in Oak Grove. They plan on taking pictures of all of Chris's work for an album that will stay at the shop. 'Forty one years as a tattooist in this area is a long time,' she said. 'He's tattooed so many people in this community. I don't care if your tattoo is 41 years old, I don't care if it's a full back piece. I don't care if it's a ladybug on your thumb. Come and let's take a picture, because the bigger that book is, the bigger the memory.' Those wishing to participate in his celebration of life can also leave a note with pictures online here. Kramlich sealed his victory with a par on the 18th hole, leading to an explosion of emotion from his head coach, Rory Entzi, and his assistant coach and father, Aaron. "Relief, it's so much harder as a coach because you just gotta watch, you gotta watch what happens and accept outcomes," Entzi said. "So it was nerving but it was a relief when it went in. Lack of hydrants hampers effort to fight Oak Grove house-business fire, chief says
State of emergency declared for Minnesota wildfires, and more headlines State of emergency declared for Minnesota wildfires, and more headlines State of emergency declared for Minnesota wildfires, and more headlines A lack of nearby hydrants hampered the effort to fight a fire inside at a home with "an operating business inside" on Tuesday night in Oak Grove, Minnesota, according to city officials. Crews were first called to a report of an attached garage fire just before 11 p.m. A WCCO crew was at the scene off Rum River Boulevard, just north of Rum River Central Regional Park. Oak Grove Fire Chief Rob Engler says residents safely evacuated the home before his crews arrived, and the flames could be seen "from miles away" during the fire's apex. WCCO "There are no hydrants in the area, so it all had to be hauled in and required a lot of support," Engler said. Several neighboring agencies were called in to help, including the Elk River Fire Department. Engler didn't indicate the home's post-fire condition or any potential cause. Oak Grove is about 30 miles north of Minneapolis.

Oak Grove wins fifth consecutive title, blanks Welsh in finals
Welsh pitcher Ethan Beard tags Oak Grove's Jenson Hurley after he tried to score on a passed ball in the bottom of the third inning of the Non-select Division IV state championship game on Wednesday at McMurry Park in Sulphur. (Rodrick Anderson / American Press) SULPHUR – No. 2 Welsh had their chances Wednesday in the Non-select Division IV state championship game at McMurry Park but couldn't close the gap as No. 1 Oak Grove won 10-0 in six innings to win its fifth consecutive state championship. It was Welsh's first state championship game appearance since 2018 and third in program history. 'I am super proud of this group,' Hayes said. 'The seniors have been through a lot. 'They made it to three straight quarterfinals, and it had never been done before. This is tied for the best season in school history, the runner-up. They have a lot to be proud of.' Welsh (23-11) was coming off an emotional extra-inning win over No. 3 DeQuincy Tuesday night and got some base runners early. Nick Gillett and Grant Haydel hit back-to-back singles in the top of the second inning, and Ethan Beard and Dane Iguess opened the third inning with back-to-back hits. The Greyhounds were able to move the runners into scoring position, but failed to score each time. Welsh trailed just 3-0 at that point but couldn't get a runner past second in the final three innings. 'We competed against a very good Oak Grove team,' Hayes said. 'It didn't go our way. 'I feel like we hit the ball with them. The hits were six to seven. I think that we just ran out of some magic. Yesterday was a special game. We just ran out of juice today.' Oak Grove's (18-12) Jackson Bradley was named the game MVP after pitching a complete game and driving in two runs on a double in the third inning. Tanner Duff, who had the walk-off hit in the 12th inning to beat DeQuincy in the 2023 state championship game, opened the scoring with a towering solo home run to left-center field in the bottom of the first inning. Gaige Neal hit a two-run double in the second inning, and the Tigers added three runs on errors in the fifth inning.

Iguess gets walk off hit, Greyhounds advance to finals
Welsh's Dane Iguess got a walk off hit Tuesday to give the Greyounds a 7-6 win over DeQuincy in eight innings in the Non-select Division IV semifinals at McMurry Park in Sulphur. (Rodrick Anderson / American Press) SULPHUR – Welsh senior Dane Iguess battled through illness on Tuesday in the Non-select Division IV semifinals, but he stayed in the game and got a walk-off hit to send the Greyhounds to the state championship game at the LHSAA state baseball tournament at McMurry Park. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Iguess hit a line drive to center field to bring home Grant Haydel, and the No. 2 Greyhounds (23-10) defeated No. 3 DeQuincy (24-12) 7-6. Iguess started the mound and pitched six innings before being relieved. He had to be checked out more than once. He finished with three strikeouts and two walks and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. 'People that were here saw him throwing up his stuff, and he battled through it,' Welsh head coach Caleb Hayes said. 'I think adrenaline, just the moment, and he battled through it. 'He could hardly walk after the game. He's just the ultimate competitor. Just so proud of him and the team for the fight tonight.' Iguess came up big in the seventh inning as well. The Greyhounds were down 5-4 with one out when Iguess singled. He moved to second on Casey Cormier's sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored the tying run on Brecken Haydel's hit to right field. 'I mean, it's never over,' Hayes said. 'I feel like when they took the lead in the seventh, we were kind of hanging our heads. But we got six seniors that kind of took the fight and said, it's not over.' Welsh sophomore Cohen Fontenot's single tied the game at 6-6 with no outs. Welsh will play four-time defending state champion No. 1 Oak Grove in the finals at 2 p.m. today. It is the Greyhounds' first final since falling to Loreauville 12-5 in 2018. 'We're playing the juggernauts, Oak Grove, who are looking to win their fifth straight,' Hayes said. 'It's going to be another freaking battle. We're going to go to war and see what happens.' Welsh looked in control after scoring twice in the fifth inning on a walk and an error to take a 4-1 lead, but Grand Lake rallied twice to take a one-run lead. Andrew Dowden hit a two-run double for a 5-4 lead with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Dowden went 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI. DeQuincy out hit Welsh 11-7, but committed three errors and gave the Greyhounds six extra base runners on walks. Carson Rainwater started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched 6 2/3 innings before being relieved by Grant Rainwater, who ended up taking the loss, with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rainwater struck out six batters and walked four. DHS 000 012 21 – 6-11-3 WHS 020 020 12 – 7-7-2 PITCHING: W – Cohen Cormier (2ip, 4h, 3er, 0k, 2bb). L – Grant Rainwater (.1ip, 0h, 2er, 0k, 2bb).
