Leopard kills calf in Ganjam Village

Berhampur: Residents of Durgaprasad village near Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district have voiced concern after an adult leopard reportedly killed a calf and injured another over the past three days. The animal lifted a calf from a cowshed. The injured calf is recovering after treatment at the veterinary hospital, a forest officer said. A few days ago, the animal had killed at least three goats in Naba Gochha, a nearby area. "We found hair samples from the goat shed and sent them to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Bhubaneswar, which confirmed the animal was an adult male leopard. We suspect the same leopard is prowling in the area," said Himansu Sekhar Mohanty, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Ghumusar North division. He said at least ten camera traps have been installed in the area to monitor the animal's movements, while a rapid response team has been engaged to create awareness among local residents. The special protection vehicle Rakshak has also been deployed to track the animal and spread awareness. The vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic cage, an 800-kg capacity chain-pull, lights, a siren, and other tools to reduce human–animal conflict and rescue animals in distress. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now During awareness drives, forest officials have urged residents not to let children wander alone near forest areas and to keep cowsheds lit at night to deter wild animals. "We have also advised people not to provoke the leopard by pelting stones," the DFO said. Cattle owners will receive compensation as per govt guidelines after verification by forest and veterinary officials, he added. Panicked locals, however, have urged forest staff to drive the animal away to restore normalcy. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). OUAT launches climate-resilient farming project in Ganjam

Berhampur: Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has launched a Rs 70 lakh pilot project in Ganjam district to make farming profitable by adopting climate-resilient measures, officials said. The project is funded by the World Food Programme (WFP) and will be implemented over two years by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Berhampur. "The project will be implanted in 29 villages in Chikiti, Digapahandi, Hinjili and Jagannath Prasad blocks," said Sujit Kumar Nath, principal investigator and senior scientist at KVK. Four climate adaptation and information centres (CAIC)s have been set up in each block. Each centre will be equipped with automated weather stations (AWS) to provide current and future weather updates and a specially developed mobile app will offer quick access to agricultural guidance to around 7,000 farmers. "The sensor-based alternate wet and drying machines will be installed in the centre to check the wastage of water. It will also check carbon emissions," said Nath. Climate-resilient paddy variety, 'Chandragiri', has been introduced during the current kharif season as part of the experiment. Solar based insect traps, wild animal repellent machines, fencing like components will be promoted to ensure year-round income and employment for farmers. The project assumes significance given frequent natural disasters affect Ganjam. "We hope the project will give a new dimension to farmers against the climate hazard," Nath added.

Another female elephant ‘electrocuted' in state

Bhubaneswar: A nine-year-old female elephant was allegedly electrocuted in Dhenkanal district on Monday, marking the second such death in the state within 24 hours. The carcass was discovered on a private tick tree farm in Khajuriakata section under Hindol forest range. "Initial investigation suggests the elephant was electrocuted by a 240-volt wire," said Dhenkanal DFO Sumit Kar. The property owner has been detained for questioning. Forest officials conducted a post-mortem on Monday morning, with samples sent to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) for detailed analysis. "While we await OUAT's confirmation on the exact cause of death, preliminary findings indicate electrocution," Kar told TOI. The electricity department has been informed about the incident and has filed a separate case under the Electricity Act. An 11-year-old female elephant was electrocuted in Naktideul area of Sambalpur district early on Sunday.

Agriculture, fisheries colleges to be set up in Odisha's Balangir & Sonepur

BHUBANESWAR/BALANGIR: The state government on Tuesday fulfilled the long-standing demand of Balangir and Sonepur by announcing to set up agriculture and fisheries colleges in the two western Odisha districts respectively. The announcement was made by deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo at the state-level Krushak Samavesh held here to mark completion of the first year of the BJP government in Odisha. 'The Agriculture department has decided to set up a college of agriculture at Balangir and a college of fisheries in Sonepur,' said Singh Deo. The proposed college at Balangir will be the fourth such institute under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). The other three colleges are in Bhubaneswar, Bhawanipatna and Chipilima. Currently, the state has only one college of fisheries at Rangeilunda near Berhampur in Ganjam district. The announcement of an agriculture college came as a consolation for the people of Balangir who have been demanding for an Agriculture university as promised by the previous BJD government which had also made a token provision of `1 lakh in the Agriculture budget for 2014-15 and 2015-16. The previous government had also started the process for establishment of a college of fisheries in Sonepur by constituting a committee headed by the dean of Agriculture, Chipilima to prepare a detailed project report. The district administration was also asked to identify a suitable location for the college which would require about 60 acre of land. After identifying a suitable site, the then district collector had written to the Fisheries and Animal Resources department in 2023 to send a team to assess the suitability of the area for the proposed college. Even after repeated reminders, there was no response from the government. The issue was raised in the Assembly during the budget session by Birmaharajpur MLA Raghunath Jagadala. To his utter dismay, Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister Gokulananda Mallik replied that his department has not received any proposal for a fisheries college in Sonepur.
