Leopard kills calf in Ganjam Village

Time of India3 days ago
Berhampur: Residents of Durgaprasad village near Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district have voiced concern after an adult leopard reportedly killed a calf and injured another over the past three days.
The animal lifted a calf from a cowshed. The injured calf is recovering after treatment at the veterinary hospital, a forest officer said.
A few days ago, the animal had killed at least three goats in Naba Gochha, a nearby area. "We found hair samples from the goat shed and sent them to the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), Bhubaneswar, which confirmed the animal was an adult male leopard. We suspect the same leopard is prowling in the area," said Himansu Sekhar Mohanty, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Ghumusar North division.
He said at least ten camera traps have been installed in the area to monitor the animal's movements, while a rapid response team has been engaged to create awareness among local residents. The special protection vehicle Rakshak has also been deployed to track the animal and spread awareness. The vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic cage, an 800-kg capacity chain-pull, lights, a siren, and other tools to reduce human–animal conflict and rescue animals in distress.

During awareness drives, forest officials have urged residents not to let children wander alone near forest areas and to keep cowsheds lit at night to deter wild animals. "We have also advised people not to provoke the leopard by pelting stones," the DFO said.
Cattle owners will receive compensation as per govt guidelines after verification by forest and veterinary officials, he added. Panicked locals, however, have urged forest staff to drive the animal away to restore normalcy.

Festival turns fatal: Bullfighter gored to death in Colombia during Corraleja festival

Man gored by bull (@PlataformaALTO) A video going viral on social media shows a disturbing incident during Colombia's controversial Corraleja festival, where a 35-year-old bullfighter, Yovanis Marquez, was fatally gored by a bull in front of shocked onlookers in Fundacion, Magdalena. According to the video, Marquez, who was known for his agility and daring manoeuvres in the bullfighting circuit, attempted to leap over the bull but miscalculated and was struck by one of its horns. The video circulating shows the shirtless Marquez being tossed into the air by the animal. 'He stood up as if he was fine, but the blood was flowing. It was only a few seconds before he fell to the ground,' an eyewitness said, as quoted by news outlet Toronto Sun. Marquez seemed disoriented but otherwise unharmed at first, even getting up on his own and running off as onlookers tried to help him. Marquez was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Animal rights group Plataforma ALTO shared the video online, saying, 'The man passed away yesterday after being gored by an injured bull, in an act of self-defense, during the 'festivities' of the municipality.' The incident comes amidst growing backlash against such events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Pieces of Clothing you should Ditch over 40 Learn More Undo Colombia passed a law in 2024 banning bullfighting, but it will only come into effect in 2027.
