Four years later, in Melbourne, the men's hockey team defeated Pakistan to claim gold, the nation's first Olympic hockey title since independence and their sixth in a row overall. In 1996, tennis star Leander Paes captured bronze in Atlanta, becoming the first Asian to win an Olympic tennis medal and the only Indian to do so. Sydney 2000 brought another historic moment as weightlifter Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal with her bronze. 17 liquor vendors fined Rs 8.5 lakh for overpricing in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: In a first-of-its-kind large-scale action in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, the state excise department penalised 17 liquor vendors for selling alcohol at rates higher than the maximum retail price (MRP). The department imposed a collective fine of Rs 8.5 lakh on the offenders following a special enforcement drive. Authorities said this was the first large-scale action in the district since the June 2025 price hike. Repeat offenders face licence suspension or cancellation, warned district collector Dilip Swami. According to officials, liquor prices in Maharashtra were revised in June 2025. Soon after, the department began receiving complaints that some licensed country liquor retailers in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district were overcharging customers in violation of the prescribed rates. Acting on these inputs, the excise department launched an intensive district-wide inspection campaign to check compliance. During the drive, officials visited multiple outlets and verified sale prices against the MRP printed on bottles. The inspection revealed that 17 country liquor vendors were charging customers above the permitted rates. He stressed that this was the first time such an extensive crackdown was carried out against liquor vendors in the district for MRP violations. "Strict action will be taken against licence holders who repeatedly flout the rules. Penalties could include suspension or even permanent cancellation of their licences," said Swami. Officials said the enforcement was aimed at protecting consumers from unfair pricing and ensuring that retail sales strictly adhered to state-mandated rates. Govt forms panel to review export barriers amid global trade woes: Focus on customs duties, GST, incentives
The government has set up a committee to examine the impact of customs duties, export incentives and refunds, goods and services tax and export clearance procedures on India's outbound shipments amid a challenging global environment. It is also working on a ₹20,000 crore long-term plan by September to shield exporters from global trade uncertainties and fluctuations, by facilitating easy access to export credit and tackling non-tariff barriers in overseas markets, under the new Export Promotion Mission.
