Galatasaray pip Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce to Super Lig title with two matches to spare
Galatasaray secured their third consecutive Super Lig title on Sunday, consigning Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce to a second-placed finish and a trophyless season. Okan Buruk's side clinched the title with a 3-0 win over Kayserispor, maintaining their eight-point lead over Istanbul rivals Fenerbahce with two matches remaining. Advertisement Sunday's victory was Galatasaray's ninth in succession; they last tasted defeat against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Besiktas on March 29. It also secured a domestic double for Buruk's team after winning the Turkish Cup for the first time since 2019 with a 3-0 win over Trabzonspor in the final on Wednesday. Galatasaray's slight lead over Fenerbahce in the title race was grew after Mourinho's side were held to a 3-3 draw by Kayserispor on April 20, two weeks before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Besiktas. As a result, Mourinho ends his debut season in Turkey without silverware. His side were knocked out of the Europa League following a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Rangers in the round-of-16, while they also fell to a 2-1 defeat against Galatasaray in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals. That match subsequently descended into controversy after Mourinho appeared to pinch Buruk's nose in a post-match altercation, resulting in a three-match touchline ban and 292,500 Turkish Lira (£5,975; $7,699) fine for the former Manchester United and Chelsea head coach. Striker Victor Osimhen, on loan from Italian side Napoli, has been at the centre of Galatasaray's success this season. He netted his 25th league goal of the season on Sunday, taking his tally to 35 in all competitions. Galatasaray are the most successful club in Super Lig history with 25 titles. Fenerbahce are the next most successful club with 19 titles, while Besiktas have won 16. ()

Vintage Jose! Mourinho brilliantly messes with a journalist after being asked why he changes his team so much as Fenerbahce head towards a trophyless season
Jose Mourinho provided a characteristically witty reply when he was quizzed by a reporter over the frequent changes to his Fenerbahce side. The former Man United, Chelsea and Tottenham boss has endured a tempestuous first season in Turkey which is set to end without silverware with Galatasaray commading a five-point lead at the top of the table. Mourinho was hit a three-match ban last month after appearing to grab the nose of Galatasaray boss Okan Buruk in the latest of a series of incendiary of incidents involving the Portuguese. While in February, Mourinho filed a lawsuit against Galatasaray after the club accused him of making racist statements. The 62-year-old, speaking after a 0-0 draw in the Istanbul derby, said the Galatasaray bench had been 'jumping like monkeys' when appealing for refereeing decisions to go in their favour. And Mourinho made more headlines when he was asked during a press conference why he had used a different XI in 31 matches this season. 'I have 25 coins, I throw the coins in the air.' he said, throwing his arms into the air in mime. 'The ones that stay on the table are the ones that I play. The ones that go on the floor, they go on the bench. I do it just like this. 'During the week, I'm having fun. I go to nightclubs every day in Instanbul, everywhere. And then when it's time to choose the team, I throw coins with the players' faces (on them). 'The 11 that stay on the table are the 11 that play... it's simple.' Mourinho has already used comedy showed his disdain towards reporters questions this season. After March's 3-1 defeat by Rangers, Mourinho pretended to fall asleep at his chair as the reporter rambled on in Turkish. 'Oh, this is too much for my head. I'm tired, man,' he said, while scratching his head. '90 minutes not to listen to all of this, I'm too tired for that.' Mourinho has been linked with a move to Rangers but this week Fenerbahce president Ali Koc insisted that the double Champions League winner had unfinished business in Turkey. The Turkish chief is confident Mourinho is happy where he is and revealed that he had already rejected a lucrative approach earlier in the season. Koc said: 'We want to continue with Jose Mourinho for stability. I find it more appropriate for Mourinho to continue for the benefit of Fenerbahce. 'Jose Mourinho was offered €36million Euros (£30m) during the mid-season break but he chose to stay at the club. This decision shows his belief in the project. 'It takes two to tango, if Jose Mourinho wants to leave, the conditions are clear. If he wants to leave, there are things in the contract that are necessary, such as giving up one year's salary. 'We have a separate relationship with the coach. He knows my family, my father, my wife, my child, we eat together all the time. He hasn't met his family, they haven't come yet. 'We are still together, if something different comes from him, we will see.'

Top Turkish clubs clash over Mourinho after derby incident
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho looks on during UEFA Europa League soccer match between Rangers and Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce have issued a lengthy defence of Mourinho for his clash with Okan Buruk, claiming the Galatasaray boss was play-acting by tumbling to the floor. Steve Welsh/PA Wire/dpa Turkish Super League sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe were embroiled in raw two days after an eventful Istanbul derby where Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho appeared to poke the guest manager in the nose during a heated exchange on the pitch. Advertisement The post-match altercation between Mourinho and Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk on Wednesday sparked a fierce exchange of words between the two clubs. Galatasaray won the Turkish Cup quarter-finals 2–1 against home side Fenerbahçe. Late Thursday, Fenerbahçe accused Buruk on social media platform X of theatrically exaggerating the contact, writing that he fell 'as if struck by a bullet' on the ground. In a response on X on Friday, Galatasaray said Mourinho is known globally for similar 'inappropriate' behaviour and should have apologized. It is 'pathetic' of Fenerbahçe to defend the 'shameful attack," Galatasaray said. Advertisement The clash comes amid a difficult stretch for Mourinho, whose team has already been eliminated from the Europa League and trails Galatasaray by six points in Turkish top league. The Portuguese coach now awaits a decision from the Turkish Football Federation on whether he will face disciplinary action over Wednesday's incident.
