Sacha Jenkins, Filmmaker Who Mined the Black Experience, Dies at 53

Sacha Jenkins, a fiery journalist and documentary filmmaker who strove to tell the story of Black American culture from within, whether in incisive prose explorations of rap and graffiti art or in screen meditations on Louis Armstrong, the Wu-Tang Clan or Rick James, died on May 23 at his home in the Inwood section of Manhattan. He was 53. The death was confirmed by his wife, the journalist and filmmaker Raquel Cepeda-Jenkins, who said the cause was complications of multiple system atrophy, a neurodegenerative disorder. Whatever the medium — zines, documentaries, satirical television shows — Mr. Jenkins was unflinching on the topic of race as he sought to reflect the depths and nuances of the Black experience as only Black Americans understood it. He was 'an embodiment of 'for us, by us,'' the journalist Stereo Williams wrote in a recent appreciation on Okayplayer, a music and culture site. 'He was one of hip-hop's greatest journalistic voices because he didn't just write about the art: He lived it.' And he lived it from early on. Mr. Jenkins, raised primarily in the Astoria section of Queens, was a graffiti artist as a youth, and sought to bring an insider's perspective to the culture surrounding it with his zine Graphic Scenes X-Plicit Language, which he started at 16. He later co-founded Beat-Down newspaper, which covered hip-hop; and the feisty and irreverent magazine Ego Trip, which billed itself as 'the arrogant voice of musical truth.' Want all of The Times? Snoop Dogg Reacts To IShowSpeed Confusing Him With Impersonator

IShowSpeed thought he met one of the most popular rappers ever this weekend and had to snap a selfie to celebrate the moment. Unfortunately, the man in the photo was not Snoop Dogg, and the Long Beach, Calif., rapper got a great laugh out of the moment. The popular streamer attended the Fatal Fury boxing event in NYC's Times Square on Friday (May 2) and ran into a man who looked like the 'Drop It Like It's Hot' rapper. Footage surfaced of the man sitting next to him, taking a photo, having a brief conversation, and then parting ways. Given Speed's hilarious mistake, the video went viral and eventually made its way to Snoop's timeline. The 53-year-old rapper reshared the post and wrote 'Almost' with multiple laughing emojis. The comments were loaded with laughs from several users and a few funny quips. 'Unc he starting look like you more than you,' one fan wrote. 'Damn, that means u gota meet him for real Snoop,' another fan wrote. One person called out who the impersonator was, an actor named Eric Finch, who is known for being a Snoop look-alike and even shot a Corona commercial with the legendary rapper once. Check out the moment below. Snoop Dogg and Death Row Records recently shared their gospel compilation album Altar Call, which was dedicated to his late mother, Beverly Tate. Jamie Foxx, Jazze Pha, October London, John P. Kee, and Charlie Bereal appeared on the 21-song project, among many other artists. 'The spirit of my mother will forever live within me. This album is a reflection of what she has taught me to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world. Just another chapter out of the 'Bible of Love,'' he told Okayplayer, labeling the album the sequel to his 2018 LP, Bible Of Love. Listen to Altar Call below. Snoop Dogg to honour mother with new gospel album

Snoop Dogg is to pay tribute to his late mother, Beverly Tate, with his new gospel album. Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the rapper announced that he will be honouring his church roots with his next project, titled Altar Call. The 21-song album is set to drop on 27 April. "Good afternoon loved ones. April 27, I'm dropping a gospel album on Death Row Records. It's called Altar Call," he said in a video. "You heard it first. A gospel album, April 27. God is good. Won't he do it?" An image of Beverly, who died in 2021, features on the cover art. And a glimpse of the track listing reveals Altar Call will include collaborations with the likes of Jamie Foxx, Jazze Pha, and Jane Handcock, among others. Following the news, Snoop reflected on his decision to record the album in an interview for website Okayplayer. "The spirit of my mother will forever live within me," he said. "This album is a reflection of what she has taught me - to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world. Just another chapter out of the Bible of Love." Snoop released his first gospel album, Bible of Love, in 2018. The record featured guest appearances from artists including Faith Evans and Rance Allen.
